  • Surf Rock To Punk Rock! Great Value!

As reviewed by Michael Roberts on 8/10/2012

I purchased the 3-Tone Sunburst from Guitar Center a week ago. I am an experienced guitar player and own several high end Custom Shop and lower end guitars. For the price tag, this Squire Jag is a great deal. I honestly was not expecting the quality of this guitar. The wood looks very nice and has lots of character. The tuning machines seem like higher end tuners. I have seen cheaper tuning machines on other guitars priced the same. The pickups are great! I wouldn't say they are hot as what you would find on an American Jag, but they are nice sounding and you can pull off the Surf guitar tone very well. You may want to raise them a bit. All and all the pickups are great. They don't have a lot of bottom. This is a great surf guitar and a guitar to add textures such as the guitar player from The Killers, or the Edge from U2. That's what this guitar can pull off. You may read out there that people complain that there is a buzz on the bridge. This is because the guitar is not setup properly. You need to raise the action and adjust the truss rod on these. Also, since it's a shorter scale, you will want heavier gauge strings with this guitar. I recommend 11's. If you have buzz on some strings on the bridge, then raise the action. The tension needs to be right. My Jag has 0 buzz and 100% tone. For the price tag, this is a great guitar!

  • Rockin' Good For the Price

As reviewed by Gavin Ehringer on 8/30/2013

Okay, let me start by saying I play instro surf guitar and have owned all the off-set waist models - Jazzmasters and Jaguars - those Made in America, Made In Mexico, and Made in Japan. This cheap Indo knockoff stacks up well to all of 'em. It has great tone and the essential Jaguar surf sound. For the price, it's a steal. Some things that suck: it falls out of tune and the strings jump off the bridge saddle barrels - a problem with many Jags and Jazzmasters. Replace the saddles with those from a Mustang. The thick urethane neck paint is slow and sticky. I plan to replace the neck with a custom job. But, hey, it's just $300!

  • Super nice guitar at a great price.

As reviewed by FRANK BAKER on 5/21/2013

Had a jones for a Jag for a while, but its usually not like a Strat, that its your go-to guitar. Just wanted that surf green vibe and to play with all the knobs and switches. Turns out its a fabulous guitar. The setup was hideous out of the box, but an hour later I had it dialed in as good as any Fender should be. Great fretwork, beautiful glossy finish, GREAT retro color - the surf green. Turns out I really like the tone. A nice beefy neck pickup but not dark. The bridge - well its more on the twang side not unlike a strat maybe a bit brighter even. Gotta know its THAT Fender single coil sound, but if you know what I mean that is a good thing. Neck is a nice C shape a bit fatter than a typical new Fender. Medium-jumbo frets better than vintage. The short scale gives it an easy playing feel a bit buzzy with 9s but part of the vibe. If you don't like that just put on some 10s or 11s. (I kinda like the buzzy snap of the 9s and have other guitars when I want to clean things up) Pickups and tone are sweet maybe a bit hotter than I remember from a Jag but nice and bright still. Squier quality here on this guitar is surprising - really great. You can sense a bit of cheapness in appearance of the metal bits but wtf it still works just fine. For sure the best value I have ever encountered in a guitar purchase. (still got a dozen and have been through more than that) Just get ready to pay for a pro setup or know what you are doing with the supplied hex wrenches and you will make it a winner.
