The Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz Bass® gives everyone the chance to own a fretless J Bass with warm, singing Fender tone! It has a one-piece maple neck with a lined fretless Ebanol fingerboard, vintage-shape agathis body, and Duncan Designed alnico V single-coil Jazz Bass pickups.
I have owned more instruments than I can count, everything from saxophones, to bass guitars, pianos and keyboards, trumpets, guitars...etc... and this one is, by far, my favorite. This is truly a stunning instrument! I knew it would be great for jazz. When I played it at the store I was able to get that nice moaning sound as I went through some pretty standard walking bass lines. I did not, however, expect it to sound so good on rock music. Play around with the knobs and you can really get this thing to growl. I use the bass for jam sessions with my students and for recording, so I cannot speak to its durability on the road. (I haven't played a gig in well over 10 years) But going by what I have experienced so far, I can only assume it would travel very well. For playing and recording jazz, fusion or rock, you simply cannot go wrong. The tone is amazing. And it is an absolute blast to play.
I bought this bass about a month ago and it turned out to be the most fun instrument that I've bought. I custom fitted at jazz bass pickguard onto it and put new elixers on it, and it just looks stunning now. I was looking into all sorts of different fretless basses (including acoustic fretless) and this is just all around the best. The tone, the feel, the sustain, the look, there's just nothing bad about it. The fretmarkers are a great help too. You get the awesome sound of a fretless bass but still know where you are. The fretless just beats all of the basses in its price range, it can't be beat. The only nicer bass I had the chance to play was a fretless Stingray, and I was not ready to shovel out $2,000 for a bass. If you're looking for a new bass and I highly recommend the Fender Jazz Modified Fretless.
I had researched a lot before I bought this bass. Read every review online and EVERYONE had good things to say about this bass. To quote Bass player magazine review -"Cons: None". What else can I add?.... I have replaced the stock roundwounds with T.I. Jazz flats and have installed a Badass II bridge on it. The tone of this guitar now is easily comparable any guitar twice/thrice its cost. With the neck pickup on full and playing with you fingers near the neck give a nice upright bass sounds. Playing with the bridge pickup on full and your fingers near the bridge give a nice jaco sound. (note:This the sound with the TI flats) Roundwounds seem to leave a mark on the ebanol fretboard - something you should know. Playing fretless is not as difficult as I thought. The fretboard lines helps a lot (your finger needs to be ON the line and not before it- easy to remedy). Trust me, if you aren't a brand snob, you'd really enjoy this bass.
