  • Nice Bass But Not What I Expected

As reviewed by David on 4/6/2015

Ok... I have been researching and wanting a new bass. My wife found some funds in the budget, so it was between this bass and a Squier Vintage Modified Sunburst Jazz. I pulled the trigger on the James Johnston as I am a fan of Lake Placid Blue, love the 1960's Surf Guitar vibe and like artist model stuff. On the plus side: This is a beautiful bass. The one I got was set up perfectly right out of the box. Low action, the frets were dressed perfectly, sound was AWESOME! The neck was a beautiful amber color (too bad the headstock was blue). NO complaints except for one thing. This is NOT Lake Placid Blue. It is Ice Blue Metallic. LPB is supposed to be DARK. This bass was a very light blue. I had a LPB Strat some years ago and LOVED that color. I felt on this bass, I could have gotten a MIM Fender in Agave Blue and the color would have been the same. The inaccuracy of the blue bothered me so much that I returned the bass to my local Guitar Center the day after I received it. The guy at GC insisted that it IS Lake Placid Blue, and compared it with a Squier Strat, but a comparison of a 2005 Fender Frontline confirmed that what Fender or Squier is trying to pass off as Lake Placid Blue these days is really Ice Blue Metallic. So if you like the color, go for this bass, it is worth every penny
