A double-bound beauty based on John 5's modded Telecaster.

This is a distinctive all-gold model with Frost Gold finish, matching gold headstock, gold hardware and single-ply "gold mirror" plastic pickguard. The one-piece maple neck has a "modern C" profile, a matching Telecaster headstock and a 12"-radius rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium jumbo frets.

The custom-designed humbucking pickups use a special dual-volume setup with the bridge pickup control in the front position and the neck pickup control in the back position (John 5 prefers this setup because he spends much time giving the bridge pickup a workout). Rapidly toggling the upper-bout three-way pickup switch gives you 5's signature "kill" effect by turning off the neck pickup volume and leaving the bridge control full up. Case sold separately.

  • The J5 Squire Tele

As reviewed by John Kopchia on 3/8/2014

This instrument feels well balanced not overly heavy in weight and both of the J5's were surprisingly well set up at the time of purchase.I did change pickguards from mirrored gold to white pearloid. The gold color is different than Fender shoreline gold and to my eye is a much better gold color. The workmanship, finsh and parts all seems to be high quality. The volume pots are the smoothest I have ever felt on any Fender guitar and I have owned several hundred Fender produced instruments.I like the pick up selector on the upper bout not jammed next to the vol or tone pot ( some alter the position for vol swells etc.)The binding is totally a classy look and the body alone would cost over $500.00 through Warmoth products. The rosewood fingerboard is comfortable and fret wire seems well manicured. My Mex P bass had horribly jagged fret ends and I had to file them my self at risk of gouging the neck finish or the wood and was $150.00 more. This guitar has as mentioned before 2 volume pot only.No tone pot.By varying the to pot positions you alter the tone generated.I have since adjusted the neck slightly due to lack of humidity in my apartment and it adjusted well. The tone is beefy but the brightness surfaces when played at louder volume. It still maintains enough Tele character to play hoe downs but can beef up for other genre as well.I really like the guitar and is exceptional at under $400.00 and in my opinion is a 92 out of 100.This could actually increase as I spend more time with it.

  • A Great Achievement

As reviewed by JAMES on 12/16/2014

As with the majority of factory new guitars, this required a thorough set-up upon receipt. It states "Crafted in China," "crafted" certainly being appropriate. Even if at higher price it is fantastic instrument, as capable of professional work as any other "professional" guitar. Both the finish and binding are beautiful. Plastic pickguard as most electric guitars but with an unique finish/gold-tinge reflective quality. Its playability is as good or better than other Fender instruments. Neck thinner, smooth, great sized for small hands. Fretboard rosewood and frets very well done. The pickups are not "cheap" except in price. They sound not good but excellent. Fantastic guitar at fantastic price. I very strongly hope Fender plans to continue this line, in perhaps other unique colors.

This version does NOT have the metal pickguard like the Black and Chrome version. It comes with the cheapest plastic single ply mirror pickguard I have ever seen. I ordered mine from GC online, waited 6 months for them to be released. The guitar arrived with several cracks in the cheap pickguard where it screws into the body. Returned the guitar to the local GC the same day. JUNK!
