  • Unbeatable at its price point. Great base for upgrades.

As reviewed by Jamison Rasbury on 5/9/2013

Like most affordable series guitars, (epiphone, ltd, etc.) Squier basses are thrown together overseas en masse with little care for the details. So what? Thats why the big boys are so much more expensive... they take care to set it up, file fret edges, more costly pickups, etc. I firmly stand behind my statement thet 99 out of 100 basses off the rack at GC could be massaged into very useable workhorses. This one was no exception. A friend was about to get rid of his, but I offered to do some work on it to prove my point. The neck and body are surprisingly solid and reliable. The fret edges were nasty, the pots were poor, the pickup a little weak and the pickguard a little thin and delicate. I filed down and polished the fret edges and set up the neck. Honestly, the feel and play was indistinguishable from some mexican or even american P's. At this point, without touching the electronics, this guy is a solid, trustworthy backup or practice bass that stays in tune and takes all the punishment you can give. Put in audio taper pots, a GFS or Fender pickup, maybe a higher-mass bridge... Poof, its no longer a Squier, but a $700-$1,200 Fender worthy for any shows or recording. Thats the big difference. Its like IKEA. If you're willing to save money up front and put some love into your instrument by upgrading and setting it up yourself, you can take a $200 bass, put 75-100 in parts in it, and a couple hours later you have a sucker punch that people wont believe is really a Squier. In short, great for a budding bassist to learn on, but as they grow, they can upgrade and tweak it and it would grow with them. Best bang for the buck in bass.

  • Great Starter Bass

As reviewed by Mike on 2/9/2009

This Bass is a very good starter bass, and is worth the price for rookies. The bass is deep and is loud and sounds clean. I liked it alot when i played it and it will always be my back up bass.

  • Great Value ...for a guitar player ..

As reviewed by Michael Magallanes on 9/28/2011

I went in to GC asking to see something for around $200 and was shown this as well as a similar priced J Bass. The P Bass seemed to have a deeper, bassier tone that I really liked so I jumped on it. I am a guitar player but wanted to have a bass to play with and do a couple of gigs with my work. It has continued to work well, play well and sound good in my opinion. The neck feels great and is fun to play. I also think it's a great deal....hence the 5 stars.
