These are really great tuners. Hold the string in just like they say they will but the only real problem is that they can't take strings any bigger than twelve gauge. It's a problem for me because I need Thirteens for playing in drop A. I've never had a problem with a string falling out though. Wonderful tuners that have made tuning sooo much easier but don't get them if you want bigger than twelve gauge strings on your guitar. When I bought my ESP Eclipse they came stock and I'm really glad they did. Don't get me wrong. They are great just no Thirteens.

MY HX: For 45 yrs, Shaller has been the most refined in tunablility, with accurate downtuning, e.g. No slack or play in tuning buttons. This is not the case with these. there is a consistant play,or slack when downtuning before engaging.
This after rechecking and adjusting the tourque of the tuners to the headstock of a new Gibson SG.; AND also played with the obvious features like tighness of lockscrew and screw for the buttons tension, but no decernable differences noted to those setting adjustments. I also resetted the tuners to headstock to be sure- no difference.
another case of bad form,at least on Gibson-the peg on the back of the headstock needs to be drilled .002 mm from the position of the stock tuner setting holes in the back of the headstock, so even if old holes are filled,it is likely the new drilling will slip/retrack to the old holes. If the peg or a setscrew needed to done; one at an offset angle would have been a non-issue. I am going with Grover locking at 18 to one ratio.
GOOD: they do lock and maintain tuning with less than 1/2 turn of the peg; and they keep in tune.
Not able to accurately tune down a semi tone.

Comments about Sperzel 3+3 Trim-Lok Tuning Machines:

These tuners feel well made and do their job well enough, but theres a bit of play in them while tuning. Not that easy to be precise with them. Had a guitar with epic tuning issues. Plastic nut that would bind a lot and damaged tuners. Replaced the tuners with these first. No help. It was all in the nut. So I bought a graphtech tusq xl nut. No more binding and better sound. Still not able to tune accurately; although it does stay in tune well enough once its there. Good tuners are a big deal on a guitar without a locking nut. I recommend looking for something with better tuning feel.

I have sperzels on my ESP DV8 and love them, so when I ordered my Les Paul Prophecy I had to order sperzels to go with it. After installing using the screw holes that were already there from the grovers I realized the tuning was backwards. The sperzels have the stabilizing peg towards the top instead of the bottom.
Easy fix I found online to reverse the tuners.
so before you install them be sure to check the winding direction. After I reversed the tuners they worked great like they always had on my ESP DV8.

I had these on a custom shop strat I bought in the early 90's. they worked very well. so when I bought a les Paul with tuning issues, this was my first fix. The quality feel with these doesn't seem to be up to par. they are working, but a few seem to feel a little (graveley) when turning them. they helped with the tuning , but I feel that these may not last. do reaserch before buying..maybe they have a better quality ones on the sperzel site?

due to all the rave reviews on these tuners I decided to buy them, I must have gotten a bad batch I hope because I couldn't believe what all went wrong. for starters and this one is me complaining but why is the brushed chrome more expensive than gold or black, normally its the opposite. I bought these for my ibanez because after 4 years the stock tuners were wearing out. the first problem was that one of the washers was missing out of the package. the second, none of the nut threads would line up with the post threads. if i wanted to get them on they would cross thread and lastly, on one of the tuners the lock wouldnt come down so that I could get a string through it. I took it back the same day and decided to just be patient and order the black chrome. I really hope the product I got was just a bad one out of the crop because I would think a product this expensive would be better quality. I will have to wait and see when I get the new ones

Would be nice if mounting stud matched up to original tuner's screw hole, but not a big issue for most players.

I needed to drill small holes for stabilizing wrist pins. Some people might want to have a tech do that.
