Overview

The Stylus RMX is a new virtual instrument plug-in for both Macintosh and Windows that combines Spectrasonics' Groove Control with Spectrasonics Advanced Groove Engine (S.A.G.E.) technology for dramatic new control over groove production and performance. Spectrasonics' in-house development team created it from the ground up, with dozens of new features including the ground-breaking Chaos Designer, a completely redesigned multi-page user interface, a new core library of sounds, all with a focus on realtime groove creation and performance.

New Core library
The massive new 7.4GB core library in Stylus RMX has thousands of cutting-edge grooves and sounds that were created by Spectrasonics' international sound design team, and produced by Eric Persing. The new core library contains nearly triple the amount of sounds originally offered in the original Stylus, as well as all the original material. The new sounds and grooves in Stylus RMX offer a much wider range of modern musical genres than its predecessor. Mixes of grooves are broken down into individual tracks called Elements for flexibility and infinite combinations.

Also new in Stylus RMX are thousands of new Kit modules, as well as user Kit construction. The new sound menus have over 10,000 new single hits, all arranged in organized categories. Users can create their own customized multitrack remix grooves and kits, save them into the plug-in, and even share them with other Stylus RMX users on different platforms and hosts. It's the ultimate remix-oriented sound module for building grooves.

Xpanded
Stylus RMX marks Spectrasonics' first expandable virtual instrument, and this Xpanded edtion comes with a series of five new "S.A.G.E. Xpanders" libraries, Retro Funk (authentic vintage sound, feel, and classic grooves), BackBeat (live acoustic "straight-ahead" drum grooves), Metamorphosis (21st Century remix grooves), Burning Grooves (maximum impact, aggressive live drum grooves), and Liquid Grooves (unique acoustic drum and percussion grooves). It also can be expanded with existing Groove Control CD-ROM libraries and even REX files - which opens the door for musicians to utilize their own audio loops within the powerful S.A.G.E. Environment.

Chaos Designer
Of the many new capabilities, possibly the most innovative feature is the Chaos Designer. With simple controls, the user can introduce musical chaos into the groove, which allows it to have constantly evolving variations. This gives the impression that the audio grooves are improvising. The results can be subtle or extreme by setting the simple-to-use controls. A Capture feature allows the spontaneous audio chaos patterns to be turned into a MIDI file, then dragged-and-dropped into the host sequencer, and played back again for further editing by the user.

Great flexibility with a natural feel

Comments about Spectrasonics Stylus RMX Xpanded Realtime Groove Module Virtual Instrument Software:

This application has a huge set of patterns (mine included 5 Xpansion packs) that are very interesting and usable. What really makes this for me is the Chaos feature that creates interesting random hits like a real drummer would make. It loaded easily and was straightforward in the instructions. The tutorial videos on Spectrasonic's website are a big help and give you a clear idea of how the instrument functions before you buy. I would recommend this method for you to determine if this instrument fits what you need and lie to do.

Essential: Best Sound Quality

By David A Fenton

from Mount Laurel, NJ

Comments about Spectrasonics Stylus RMX Xpanded Realtime Groove Module Virtual Instrument Software:

Definitely get Stylus RMX if you want instant big sound in your tracks. I've been using virtual instruments since the very beginning, and while there have been many interesting and innovative plugins, it wasn't until RMX that I could get punchy, hardware like sounds generated within the computer - and it contains a MAJOR BOAT LOAD of kicks, hats, snares, etc.. you will never run out. Initially I used on Windows with SONAR, then later switched to MAC with Logic, the engineering has been flawless on both operating systems and Stylus has been as reliable to use as I could hope. I consider Stylus RMX an essential component of any serious studio.

Still waiting for tech support.

By Steve Thomson

from Plymouth, Michigan

Comments about Spectrasonics Stylus RMX Xpanded Realtime Groove Module Virtual Instrument Software:

I bought this product, and when I went to load it, nothing happened. I went to the Spectrasonics website and found out, under FAQ, that the installers don't work with "Snow Leopard", (Mac's new Operating system). They tell you that you need to do a manual install. Great, that's all I needed. I downloaded the instructions for the manual install, and, after reading through them several times, decided not to attempt it on my own. I'm not a computer tech., I'm an engineer. So, I called their tech support. A machine always answers your call. I left a message to call because I needed help with the install. Their wait time, they say, is 3 days. Don't believe it. It was a week before they called back. The tech. and I got the install finished, after about 3 hours of waiting for everything to load. He wasn't the most patient guy on record. The plug in was loaded with it stock grooves but the expansion disks were not loaded at that point. He must have had better things to do because he told me to "just click on the installer and designate the appropriate drive". I wanted to continue the install but it was not to be. All I was concerned about was the "Backbeat" disc. Within the next couple of days I attempted to load the expansion discs. The installer required a program called "Rosetta". I was at another deadend. I called their tech support again. After another 9 days, tech support called back while I was at work. I asked if he could call back the following day, and he agreed. He never called back. I called them again...waited a couple of days..called again....nothing. I left messages every time. I returned this product to guitar center, who, against their policy, took it back, after they heard this story....less a 15 % restocking fee. It's been about 3 weeks now, and I'm still waiting for a call from Spectrasonics tech support. Honestly, I don't think I'll ever get one. I experienced about 3 weeks of aggravation and a lost to my pocketbook for absolutely nothing. They only make 3 products. They all sound great, but if you don't stand behind your product, I've got no time for you. This is not Guitar Center's fault. I'm speculating, but I think they are all programmers at Spectrasonics, with no one their who has a degree in business. I could be wrong, but my experience tells me otherwise.
