I have owned a set of Sony MDR-7506 Headphones for about four years and have been fairly happy with them except for one annoying problem. The ear pads can come off and are really hard to get back on. I play guitar and I've mostly used these headphones for studio monitoring during recording sessions. I can't tell you how many times I have shown up at the studio to find an ear pad has come off and while the other guys are setting up, tuning, etc., I am fumbling around trying to get an ear pad back on the headset.

Beautiful in every way

By Keith R. Brock

from Milford, Pa

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I consider myself to be a professional audiophile. I pay very close attention to all dynamics of a product and choose not to write reviews unless the product is THAT good. These headphones are THAT good. They touch upon the entire frequency spectrum with clear, concise, undistorted accuracy. A nice flat curve but with great fidelity. Great for studio and general use. The highs never become obnoxious to the point where it becomes piercing, the lows sound wonderful, bassy in the ow range, tighter in the mids - never sounding too bassy or muddy - they retain a nice response at any volume level throughout the frequency spectrum. Excellent quality for the cost. I have tried on a reputable pair of phones that were in the $500 range and these sound much better. Sony provides you with a great cost point and excellent sound and build quality - this product will not disappoint.

The Standard

By Zakk

from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

These reproduce a flat, clear sound, optimal for live monitoring, boom mic operators, even mixing in a pinch where no near-fields are accessible. They work extremely well for enjoying your favorite music from your personal audio device (but expect to hear the digital artifacts common with low quality audio encoding if you choose to use that for your player) I also use these for DJ-ing events as well, not the best for that, but they work just fine. Plenty loud. They are THE industry standard by which all others are judged. You will find them in every recording studio, tour bus, television studio, movie set, etc etc. I have had them for going on 10 years now, I have abused the hell out of them, they are durable. Nearly EVERY part is replaceable or serviceable.

Where Have I been all these years

By Onemusician

from Richmond, VA

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

One word. WOW! I am a hobbyist musician, I do a lot of recording with Synths and computers, I owned a pair of Sony's MDR-200 for years, I have always thought those were decent sounding and never opted for anything else. When my headphones finally broke, I splurged on this, and man am I glad. These things are dead on spot accurate, they have a flat frequency response and are good for mixing. You can hear nuances of sounds, and don't have to turn them up very loud. One of the best purchases I made. The only thing disappointing about them is that the sides near the head are overcurved and thus make them look quite large (kinda like Football coaches Headphones), but who cares.

Nice bass and rugged design.

By Brian

from Grand Rapids, Michigan

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I've used this model on several occasions. I want to rip them off my head every time I use them with audio that contains a lot of midrange frequencies such as piano or voice. Vocals and pianos specifically sound extremely unnatural with these headphones as if you're listening to them through an old fashoned keyhole. The only thing these headphones have going for them is their solid deep bass response. This model looks rugged and does fold up into one nice compact piece. They are generally comfortable to wear but I just can't keep em on for very long due to my distaste for their sound signature. Overall I wouldn't recommend this pair of headphones. A pair of Sony MDR-V150's sound better in my opinion.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I've used these headphones for 10 years at my current job for almost 8 hours a day and I wouldn't even think of switching headphones. I've been an audio producer for 10 years at the same company and use these every day. 10 years and last year I just got a new pair. Where I work I unfortunately can't use my $1000 studio monitors because of lack of soundproofing and adjacent offices that I would disrupt. I was given these headphones when I started and loved them. I use them for audio imaging, production, mixing and mastering. When I finish a project I listen back on the studio monitors and it's a match. These headphones give you a clean, exact representation of the sound being input to them. They don't add bass that wasn't there like other headphones that are more advertised for general public use. These give you the TRUE source sound.

They are COMFORTABLE! I wear these for 10 hours a day sometimes. Most over-ear headphones squeeze your head and these don't. The padding makes them comfortable. Now, if you wear them as much as I do the foam will start to break up over 3 years or so...they sell padding replacements!! The only thing that killed my last pair after almost 8 years was that the wire rubbed raw against a desk corner it ran across. Nothing actually wrong with the phones. It was 8 years of a wire rubbing on a desk corner.

Guess I should mention that I even use these at home. Also, because of me, so does my 65 year old mother. She loves listening to Yanni on them. I hear "Reflections of Passion" is "utterly beautiful" through these, haha. I can't speak higher of these. Totally pro all around.

You don't need to spend more money because in this case money doesn't equal performance. If I want pure audio quality I'll ESPECIALLY pick these over more expensive headphones. I don't want bass, or "noise-cancelling" stuff added by headphones because that's what a consumer wants. If you're looking at these it's because you want true sound.

    But can't beat the V6

    By Paul

    from NYC

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

Yes, although the 7506 are the "professional" version of the "consumer" MDR-V6, the V6 actually have a broader frequency response range and the V6's do actually sound richer. I am not an audiophile but I do notice a difference. I use the V6's for audio production and normal everyday listening (iPod, etc.) and I've tried the 7506 and I stand by my word - V6 is the way to go.

    Great headphones

    By Ruvim Trofimovich

    from east bethel, mn

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I use these headphones when i play on the drums with my band and I have to say, they are great. We hook them up to the sound board and i can hear every instrument clear as day. The bass and the highs sound beautiful. They are also very noise reducing, so when im playing my drums, i can hear them just right that they dont get to loud. I would reccomend these for dj's, mixers, instrumentalists; anywhere where you need to moniter other instruments. Great headphones at a great price.

    Classic

    By Cody

    from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

These phones are great for two reasons. First off, you will notice right away they are sonically flat and uncolored. Very accurate in that regard. Secondly, because they are the most widely used headphone your representation while using them will be just as that of the vast majority of musicians that use them.

A must have for Home Studios

    By Cez

    from Newport Beach, CA

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I bought the Sony MDR-V150 but was not happy with the quality but for the cost they did the job. I recently upgraded to the MDR-7506. This is a must have for all home studios. They works very well and they sound great. Youtube them if you need to know more info. I would not use them solely for music like mp3 (Bose is probably better for just music). Like the big word on the headband says, STUDIO, they will become your favourite studio headphones. The "Closed-Ear Design" is ideal for tracking. This prevents noise from entering or exiting from the headphone. That way you don't pickup the backing track through the microphone while recording the vocals.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I'm a professional musician and recording artist (rock). For thirty years I've used a pair of Sennheiser headphones (now they're vintage, I suppose!), and I wanted to diversify. The Sony Studio Monitor headphones are louder and brighter than my old Sennheisers - but this is not necessarily always a good thing. The Sennheisers produce what I would call "concert hall" sound, while the Sonys produce "night club" sound. I don't know any other way to describe it. The Sony headphones produce ear fatigue much more quickly. It's like eating a steak vs. birthday cake. The birthday cake sure tastes good... but the sugar high isn't very nice in the long run. I'm happy to have both pairs so I can compare when mixing.

Nothing wrong with the sound. Can be uncomfortable when wearing for long periods, but that might just be my sensitive ears. I experience this with other over the ear sets I have. For shorter durations (1/2 hr-3/4 hr) I can forget I have them on. I use these on my imac for watching video, and they really bring sound from Nat Geo or Nova specials to life. Since some of these can run up to 2 hours, I do find I need to get them off for a few minutes at some point. All in all, a good set at a reasonable price point.

I walked into my local guitar center and asked the pro audio guy simply "what's the best headphones you've got?" Without a word he just picked these up and handed them to me and smiled. I was thrown off by the retro packaging, but i took a chance and they are amazing! They are the perfect monitoring complement to my KRK's and I soon found out are an industry standard in headphones. The only complaint are the earpads that come easily off and are a hassle to get back on, but that just means you can easily replace them. Look no further.

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

I play the drums for my Church's youth group, and Adult service, when I'm needed. My Church has always put money into the sound and we have it all, including an Aviom system. Ive been using In-ears for 2 years and its to the point that Ive had some hearing loss. I knew I had to look into headphones. So I've been asking around and finally I got advice from the sound guy at my church and I told him that I needed headphones that sounded good and could isolate most outside noise, and durable enough to use for playing the drums and that they wont break easily if they happen to fall :D And of course it has to sound amazing ! Right away he told me about these. I told him you better not let me down ! I purchased these headphones and wow. I have to say that the box/appearance is phenomenal. I took them out and I noticed the cord is long and spiral like ! The feeling and flexibility of these headphones are amazing. Finally it sounds awesome. Crisp high's and Great low's. Also you don't need to raise them high to hear everything In a song or mix because even with the volume low I could hear every instrument and vocal perfectly. Overall great headphones. Its like they were made for me and I'm sure you will agree with me! Just buy them.

I needed something with an acurate sound for my home protools rig. I did not have the money to go and spend 6 to 9 hundred on some good reference monitors so I chose to get these cans instead. And they are great!!! I can actually hear what is really going on now. they have helped my mixes sooooo much! They may not be studio monitors, but they are the next best thing besides their beg brother MDR-7509.

Hands Down Best In Price Range...

          By J.C.

          from Derby,CT

Comments about Sony MDR-7506 Professional Headphones:

Just picked these up this weekend after doing plenty of research. I've had a pair of MDR-V150's for years as a quiet alternative to an amp with my SG run through a Floor Pod Plus. Until recently I never considered how much better it could sound run through a nice pair of headphones so I started looking and based on hundreds of customer reviews I narrowed it down to the Sennheiser HD-280 and the Sony MDR-7506. Both seemed to be an incredible value considering the cost and overall quality but for my preferences and application, the MDR-7506 were the better of the two. They are incredibly comfortable on the ears and fit my big head nicely without feeling like a vice after an hour of use. As far as sound is concerned, the difference between these and the old pair of Sony's I had been using is night and day. I can't even begin to describe how much better they sound. Compared to the Sennheiser HD-280, the MDR-7506 provided a little more low end and a brighter high end which suited my needs a bit better than the Senn's. Either way you can't go wrong considering the price and overall quality. For me though, nothing beats the MDR-7506.

I use to own a pair of these and they were great. The new 7506, I use weekly in our college recording studio. We have 10+ pairs of them. They have been updated with neodyium magnets and sound even better. The ones made in the late 90's had samarium cobalt magnets. I always check my mixes and mast.ering with the 7506 before decisions are committed.
