Overview

These headphones, featuring a built-in USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC) amplifier, connect digitally to your devices to ensure your music sounds even closer to the original recording. And because the signal is only converted to analog when it reaches the drivers, you’ll enjoy unmatched clarity and accuracy on every track.

Superior conversion, purer sound
Most portable devices include a simplified digital-to-analog converter, resulting in slightly compromised sound quality. These headphones, with a dedicated USB DAC amp built in, take over control of the conversion process from your device, then amplify sound using the integrated S-Master HX digital amplifier.

Connecting digitally keeps music true to the original
Headphones with an integrated, dedicated DAC amp can control conversion and amplification. Music stays digital for longer, only converted to analog as it reaches the drivers.

Multiple connections
Listen to music from your PC, Xperia Smartphone, Walkman, or iPhone using one of the supplied digital cables. Or connect to other players using a 3.5 mm stereo audio cable.

Every subtle note, precisely reproduced

Tune in to clear, balanced sound that stays true to the original recording, even at high volume. The highly responsive liquid crystal polymer (LCP) diaphragm is aluminum-coated, and combined with a 1.57 in HD driver, gives a more consistent and precise sound across the entire frequency range than a conventional diaphragm.

Keep sound in
The enfolding design with ergonomic 3D earpads seals music in and keeps distractions out. Acoustics are reflected back towards your ears for the subtlest of sounds.

Style and comfort in perfect harmony
The MDR-1ADAC headphones have Iconic looks with a sleek metal headband and plush, black leather ear pads. They provide pure comfort with a closed-back, wrap-around design that fits securely over your ears.

Take control
Conveniently adjust the volume of your music tracks using a rotary-style controller on the headphones

This headset is ideal for someone who wants simply the best of both sound quality and noise cancellation beyond all else. however it comes at a price, literally and figuratively. The biggest draw back being the size and the weight, the NC500(600)D is already on the large side compared to most of its competitors, the 1RNC go even further, taking up an entire section of my travel bag. Another drawback is the "stylish" rods on the back of the ear piece, because the rods sticks out behind slightly, they actually hit the pillow when sleeping while face up, which adds a bit of uncomfortable pressure. On the other hand because the side is relatively flat and large, the 1RNC is better to sleep with on the side of the head then the NC500(600)D. The the biggest improvement has to be the fact that the 1RNC actually works as a regular headphone when the battery runs out, you have no idea how many times i had to use the cheap $2 headphone they give you one planes to watch the movie because the battery died. All in all and good upgrade from the NC500(600)D, but I just wished Sony did a few minor changes to the NC model to make it better suited for traveling purposes.

Extremely comfortable, solid build quality, and really excellent, balanced sound--so everything about the headphones themselves are really nice. Slightly more bass-heavy than the MDR-7506's, which I also own, but honestly I can't tell a difference other than that (although the headband and ear cups on these are softer and higher quality, and without the big cord the balance feels better). But the pairing/Bluetooth connection is a little wonky with Macs; at least once day there's an error where the connection drops out, or I have to turn them off and on a couple times to use them as my audio device. Also, once I had them paired with my computer neither of my two coworkers (also on Macs) were able to pair with their computers even after I turned my Bluetooth off. However, my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (both Apple products) also get weird sometimes, so it may be more of an OS issue than a headphone issue. However, wanted to put this out there since these are expensive, so if a Mac is your main computer, you might want a corded model or something else.

Excellent headphones

By happyfunball

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

These are excellent, they blew me away. They are the best BT headphones I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot. There is no difference between BT and the wired connection when it comes to quality. Thats a good thing, since they don't come with an iPhone cord, so if you are using Apple products you pretty much *have* to use BT. They work fine on my iPhone5 and Macs.

Everything I wanted

By Rob37

from Seattle, WA

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

Full disclosure: I'm a Sony headphone fanboy. First impressions on the MDR-1RBT are great. Overall sound is good with big bass. Bluetooth pairing is fast, reliable, and has great range. They fit snugly on my head with a fair amount of inward pressure, but after wearing them for only relatively short periods they don't seem to cause any discomfort. They appear sturdy and I'm not worried about them getting a bit of abuse. Mic quality seems good. Volume controls on the headphone augments the volume setting from the paired bluetooth device which is great. I wasn't able to get them to pair with my Nokia 920 over NFC though after mainally paired the NFC works fine to power on and off the headphones so maybe just user error. Definitally the most I'v paid for a pair of headphones, but I'm still happy enough with the value.

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

Great sound quality. No difference between wired and wireless. Would happily recommend. As mentioned in cons there is only a soft cover case and the charging wire is only about 2ft but nevertheless still very happy with this sony product. Wireless setup was very simple and easy.

a few things to note before buying..

By meteor

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

l've tried everything so far to get these to work on my macbook pro, which is boot camped with a clear install of windows 8, which Sony says will make these headphones compatible with. however nothing l've tried has worked so far, even my pc, which is just windows 7 and a hp based model won't recognize this device. so that's something to consider if you are looking to buy these for a laptop or pc... you will most probably wont get a connection with the headphones.

The Bluetooth Headphones to Beat

By gsimonds

from Michigan

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

These headphones are terrific. I've tried many others, including the gimmicky Ziks, and as far as sound quality and comfort, the 1RBTs are the head of the class. Sure, they are pricey, but you get what you pay for. I would have liked more metal in the build for the price, but the plastic seems durable enough. Most importantly, the sound is the best I've heard. They are not bass cannons, but there is plenty of clean bass that doesn't junk up the mids/highs. I'm no audiophile, but I am very particular with wireless headphone sound, and the sound even improved after a short 5hr burn in. The range was excellent on the BT, as I was able to much further than any other BT device I own. I did not notice any static or cutoffs at 10m even through several walls.

Decent Product Hampered by Poor Customer Service

By WAnthonyH1982

from 33713

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

They sound decent. Actually, they sound pretty good when connect through the lighting cable to an iPhone 6. But see the following issues: 1. Using it through the USB port in a MacBook Pro is very simple, but can be frustrating if you've never done it before. The instruction manual does not explain properly how to use them with a computer. Customer service had absolutely no idea how to set up. I had to Google the whole thing up somewhere else. 2. High-res media player that is advertised in the instruction manual is nowhere to be found. The link provided was broken. Had to undertake a lengthy Google search just to find it in a different Sony website (certainly not the one advertised in the manual). 3. The advertised charging accessory is nowhere to be found for purchase in Sony's website. 4. Headphone usability will depend on how durable the proprietary cables last. Sony will surely not support this product past a certain date. They barely support it now. This is my second time trying to post this review. Sony doesn't like negative reviews listed.

Good headphone but mine has defective left ear pad

By Kramer01

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

Bought the Z7 soon after the first reviews came out and to be honest I'm not disappointed with the sound. It requires a bit of burn in but after that it sounds really good. Many user say this is a slow and dark sounding headphone and it is as long as you don't use/pair it with a capable amp. Its requires an amp to shine. Its easy to drive so people don't use an amp but don't be fooled to fully unleash the potential of the Z7 it needs to be paired with a good desktop DAC and Amp. I use it with a Burson Conductor. Warm meaty sound while being neutral at the same time. No part of the audio frequency is emphasized. Due the big drivers everything sounds GRAND. Non fatiguing sound with loads of deatil. Black background and absolutely no grain in the sound. Excellent build quality and sexy looks. Materials used are great. Now the negatives: There aren't many but my set has a defctive left ear pad. It has less cushioning than the right ear pad, left earpad is thinner than the right one and now after a month of use the foam has compressed a bit and the left driver rubs against the top part of my ear and that causes chafing which is really uncomfortable. What makes it worse is that Sony does not sell replacement earpads and now I'm stuck with an excellent sounding headphone that I cannot enjoy because of comfort issues. Sound great... after figuring out set up

By gBell

from San Francisco, CA 94115, USA

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

Purchased these last week and am pretty happy so far. I usually opt for in-ear and have been using Shure for a long time as my go-to for travel. Decided it was time for some cans to drown out my noisy co-workers and decided the MDR-1ADAC a go. I've never had a DAC or, obviously headphone with a DAC built-in, so I am very impressed with the sound quality. However... COME ON SONY. Setting these up was like trying to solve a riddle. Thank god for the internet and some European who decided to actually explain that you had to download a driver and install it, then find your recognized device through the audio settings in Windows. It's beyond silly that there are zero instructions included with the headphones that mention this. I'm not one who wants a 30 page manual, but just thrown me a bone here. It's a vital piece of info...

Audio nirvana !

By IheartmusicI

from 44708

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

It is very musical, relax, yet detailing and spacious ! Easy to drive ! iPad/iPhone ? Smartphones ? Plug and play. Excellent build quality and best of all "Hand made In Japan". I have been an audio enthusiast for 20 years from vynil to cd to DVD....skipped the iPod and MP3 market, and now back into high-resolution. The pair of Z7+ZX2 is exactly what I had been asking for. Spaciousness, dimensional, accurate placements, balanced, detailed, and most of all realistically organic. There are oceans of different headphones and IEMS, consumers easily get confused, and they tend to jump toward more marketing and fashion headphones than audio quality. Sony had been producing excellent headphones and portable audiophiles grade gears. Ask Dr.Dre yourself, he uses Sony Hp in his studio. Now, with the Z7, build quality, fashion and audio quality, look no further. Full body cymbals hit, detailed resonances of an instrument or hall affect within your song. If it was mastered, mixed, produced within it, hear it. Bass, sub-bass, rumbles, vibrations and the resonance of a kick drum feel so realistic. Just exactly like what Sony stated "every notes precisely reproduced" and a bonus "very realistic and close to the real instruments in real life!" On top of it "very spacious, just like a real live performance in a stadium" and the icing on the cake "it is semi-open headphones, so you get semi-noise isolated, and it semi-leakage of sound". Sony, I thank you that you finally release a headphones that is top notch quality as in build, material, audio performance, and is nowadays gadgets friendly !!! 70 ohms people !! Oh ghosttttt. Thank you, thank you 1000x times.

Fantastic Audiophile Headphone

By Techlife

from Undisclosed

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

I have and have had quite a few quality headphones and iem's over the past 4 or 5 years and the MDR-Z7 ranks up top. With its smooth and warm signature along with good detail retrieval the Z7 can hold its own against some of the best hp's. Bass is powerful but not over powering, mids are lush and warm with great sounding vocals and the treble has a laid back feel to them yet still very detailed and never harsh. One of my favorite parts of the sound signature is the soundstage. They sound much more like an open hp than closed, even more open than some open hp's I have. They have top notch imaging also with the best 3D presentation I've heard from any hp. Build quality, like most Sony products is very good. The angled ear pads are very comfortable as is the headband padding. They're not to heavy so long listening sessions are great with them. I really enjoy these hp's and think most people that like a warm sound signature would as well. Don't let the price scare you away because they're worth it imo and are cheaper than many other hp's they sound as good or better than.

A Hidden Gem

By vinylrevolver

from Kingwood, TX 77339, USA

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

Sony has apparently been building some of the worlds finest dynamic headphones for quite a while as I realized a year ago while attending the Newport Audio Fest where one of the specialty music vendors was demonstrating their music with a very well worn pair of SONY headphones that were easily 10 years old. At first listen, it was obvious that these substantial headphones were Reference Quality in their day as the sound had an ease, fullness and resolution that was unmatched by all the other offerings in the room - I was impressed! After listening to these new MDR-Z7 headphones, I am very pleased to realize that SONY is back in the headphone business in a very large way. I feel sorry for the competition in what is quickly becoming a very crowded marketplace.

Fantastic DSP

By SolMan

from Scottsdale, AZ

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

For the purists requiring an unadulterated signal at the headphone plug, they have to consider that there has always been acceptance of passive sound processing with speaker systems by way of using several speakers with different frequency bandwidth requirements and different attenuation settings in one enclosure to make the resultant frequency spectrum as flat as possible. Therefore, why not accept some DSP processing for headphones. Due to size limitations in headphones, only one speaker is included which is required to recreate a very wide bandwidth. With little air required to be moved, this can easily be accomplished. But, what about the whiteness or flatness of the spectrum over all frequencies? How can we ask one speaker to sound like a speaker system. Only way is to adjust the signal to push the headphone speakers into a flat response is through DSP. I am now enjoying the result of DSP for headphone by way of my Sony MDR-1RNC MK2 headphones which include : Digital Noise canceling technology S-MASTER™ Digital Amplification DSEE Beat Response Control Have only a very general understanding of how each of these processes are used. Understandably, not much detail from Sony. The phones in the off position sound low frequency boomy. Probably engineered that way to compensate for the low frequency signal loss when the noise cancellation is turned on. With the phones switched on however, the music just seems to come alive with more detail and soundstage. Don’t know how that happens, but I like. Great low frequency response. Plucked guitar strings have a very nice transient response. Beautiful sound. I’m familiar with image processing and can understand that there might be some algorithms that could improve what our ears hear as opposed to our eyes.

Comments about Sony MDR-1ADAC Headphones with Built-In DAC:

OK, are they a bit pricey? Yup, but if you want the best, you know the rest of the story. Performance, physically they have outstanding comfort and controls. The sound is frankly, surprising and once again, outstanding. Over all, I'd not only recommend them but if a close friend was in the market. I'd force em to get these, the best headphones I have ever owned. Sony has outdone themselves with their Digital Noise Canceling Headphones.
