Plugging into this amp is breathtaking. If you pop the hood, you'll see that it comes stock with extremely high end Mercury Magnetics transformers, and a tube buffered reverb circuit. A majority of the tone of this amp is coming from the preamp section, and very little breakup is happening in the power section, making it possible to get great results at low volumes. The clarity is unsurpassable, even when the preamp is 11'd (Yes, the knobs on a Soldano go to 11). It has some of the smoothest, richest, overdrive available with beautiful note bloom. Though this amp is bright, it is in no way fizzy, or harsh. The key to unlocking the potential of this amp is in your cabinet selection. If you run it into an open backed cabinet, you might find that it is lacking in low end. Running into a closed back cabinet will give you a nice tight low end that fits in the mix perfectly. Speaker selection is also integral in getting the most out of this amp, as it is very sensitive to speaker swapping. I would stay away from speakers with a very pronounced high end peak. Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary speakers were a little too bright for my taste, I opted for something a little darker, and I still have plenty of high end on tap. You'll find that this amp doesn't have a whole lot of headroom, but can clean up nicely when the Master volume is around 8 and the preamp about 1 1/2. The cleans on this amp are fat, but not as tight - but, hey, you don't buy a Soldano for the clean channel.
There's a reason why Clapton and B.B. King use Soldano amplifiers... they are simply the best sounding, best built, tube amplifiers around. This amp blows Marshalls off the map. In addition, their customer support is unmatched. Several people have even claimed to talk to Mike personally. How cool is that? When it's all said and done, it's about tone and this amp has plenty of it. This amp sings for days and can get any sound from blues to hard rock. They also hold their value extremely well so you wouldn't take a bath if you make the mistake of parting with it. Make no mistake about it, this 20 watt amp is LOUD! You really need to hear it to believe it. Once you have, you'll know why it's Clapton and B.B. King's choice.
