Reading reviews here and elsewhere, it seems some people don't realize that this is a kids' beginner drum set. Although, an adult can use it, it's scaled for kid size. There are some limitations: The toms are fixed in a molded plastic casing, mounted on couple of aluminum tubings. The only adjustments you can do is to cut down the tubings, and/or bend them to your likings to get better angle/height. The toms sit quite flat even an adult will end up hitting the plastic rims of the toms because they're mounted so flat. The other thing is that the sensors seem to be two level sensors. You get two sounds, depending on how hard you hit them. They are not continuously variable sensors, where you have a range of sounds from light to heavy hits. Hi-hat does this: it gives you open or closed sounds, plus the close sound with just the pedal. Cymbals: you get a dedicated ride and crash. It seems they only give one sound regardless of how hard of a hit. Not sure for all of the 10 drum kits that it comes with. Those limitations are not a big problem since, after all, it is a kids' drum set, mainly to test to see if the kid likes to drum or not. Some says that the bass is "quieter" than the rest. Well, the sound you hear depends on the sound system you're using and their frequency responses. I have headphones with exceptional bass response. Some people complain about the excessive bass from these headphones. The bass actually sound great with these headphones, considering the drum set is basically a toy. The same thing applies going through and amp. I'm using a small guitar amp and the bass is very minimal. Again, pay attention to the frequency response of your system. Also, the manual talks about adjusting the volumes of each of the sensors. I haven't tried it yet--no need to, so far. If you need to, you may be able to adjust the bass to be louder. Since I only had this for only a week, I can't say much for it's durability. Someone said that the power supply is lacking power and the cheapest of quality. Did he really do a tear-down inspection of the unit to check the quality? He didn't say. Those power supplies are just a 9V, 600mA switching power supplies, like the ones that comes with your cellphones...only this one is 9v instead of 5v. The drum set does not drive any speakers, other than headphones. Speakers take lots of power, but headphone don't. The 600mA rating doesn't sound too small just to drive digital electronics. So, folks, if you get a defective unit, that's unfortunate and it does happen from time to time, but I only read one review with a bad unit. But the important thing to remember is that this is a KIDS' drum set and beginner at that. Don't expect to get a pro-gear at this price. Lastly, this drum kit is worth the money if you get it on sale. If not on sale, then spend a little more on a better unit. BTW, it doesn't come with the throne.

My original purpose in buying this kit was to replace my daughter's broken Rock Band kit (with the 3 cymbal add-on)... I was disappointed to learn only after it arrived that the MIDI connection is USB as opposed to the standard 5 pin plug (search as I might - before and after - I could find no mention of this or see it in the pictures). BUT, being a professional musician familiar with MIDI, it was no big deal to hook the kit's USB MIDI up to a computer, run a standard MIDI cable out of my MIDI interface into the Squire MIDI controller for Wii that I also purchased, turn on MIDI Thru in my sequencer software and the kit worked perfectly without needing to remap any notes!!
The control placement is a little odd and I found myself tweaking the hi-hat and crash pad locations to try to protect it from my daughter's stray hits...
I've also used it myself to wrap my hands around a tune before rehearsal... the internal sounds are OK but again you'd need to go through a computer (as I did above) to get it to trigger an external drum module like a D4 or what have you.
I also found the headphone send to be a little underpowered for my taste... maybe that's by design so users aren't killing their hearing or blowing up headphones then blaming the company... :) Running everything through a small mixer gave my ears just enough extra.
On the whole I'm pretty pleased with the kit - even with its layout falling somewhere between conventional and Rock Band - and you can't beat (sorry - no pun intended) getting the Simmons name on a kit for the price!!

Not worth it if you know what you're doing

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

This kit would probably be good for a beginner. Plenty of fun things like songs and grooves to play along to, and the MIDI setup is easy. But if you are a rock drummer, and are used to hitting them hard, this thing just won't stand up. I bought it to practice in the apartment, thinking I was getting a deal...but I should have saved for the V-drums. The transducers and foils that conduct the signal from the heads to the brain were destroyed in the first two hours of playing, just from the sticks hitting the heads. Mind you, I'm not a crazy metal drummer or anything...I just play normally for rock n roll. Once those things are disconnected you have to re-solder them, and the solder is the only thing that holds it together, so it falls right back apart. Which means unplayable. Not to mention all the missed hits, triggering the wrong drum with contact, canceling out high hat when hitting at the same time as the snare, and so on, that go along with a cheap electronic kit. And the MIDI is super slow, so you can't connect in real time to lay tracks in Pro Tools unless you want to spend an eternity editing. So again, if you are a beginner, this thing would be absolutely a steal for the price, because when it works it actually sounds pretty good. But if you are already a drummer, this is not the indoor practice kit you want. More frustrating than fun, and it eventually ended up in the trash because I didn't even feel it was worth saving the parts.

Not a bad starter kit...everything is made out of plastic, so watch out....only bad things are, you cannot edit any sounds, & no 1/4" TRS jack to connect to PA or drum/ keyboard amp... I had to get a 3.5mm stereo to dual 1/4" cable to make this work... Best one was the Hosa HMP010Y 10 ft.

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

This might be the first time I've ever left a review on any product. I've had this set for less than a year and already it's barely functional, some of the toms are falling out of place and the hight hat is barely holding itself together. Even when it was new the high hat was incredibly unresponsive when I wanted it to work and often played without me even touching it. The bass drum is extremely quiet and can barely be heard when I'm playing with other music. The snare is either too quiet or too loud, and it's nearly impossible to do a goo snare roll because of the terrible response time of this set. All in all, it's similar in quality to the video game Rockband's drum set.

Comments about Simmons SDXpress2 Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I received this set as a bonus for purchasing another Simmons set. This little set was given to my nine year old grandson who is just starting his drumming life. I wish you all could have seen his face when this set was presented to him. He has learned the module quickly and is already using the various voice and set settings. I think this set is a bargain. It can be used both for skilled drummers as well as new ones. With this set he can learn to apply what he learns on the snare at school to a full set. He's off and running.

My 13 yo daughter has been wanting a drum set but is just learning and space is limited. This set was perfect. It fits nicely in her room, sounds terrific and the price was great- if she changes her mind I'm not out a fortune. In the meantime she is enjoying the check out of her set and getting better every day!

The price is a good deal and the sounds is great. However, the toms are too small and was laid flat. The ride is hardly audible too and the snare has little sweet spot. I still recommend this kit for a small venue and skiffle group.
