Is this the best electronic drum set out there ? Of course not ! But if you evaluate it on what you get for the price, it's a decent little 5 piece drum set + 3 cymbals. The quality of the drum sounds through a decent amp is fine, and you have 10 different diverse drum sets + a user defined set to choose from.
I'm a professional musician, but not a drummer. I mainly got this as a MIDI drum trigger for drum samplers in my DAW. It works quite well for that, and I prefer it over trying to play a drum part on my Akai Pad controller.
As an entry level set, you shouldn't expect it to match up feature wise with sets costing twice as much or more.
The main shortcoming for me is the single zone snare, verus a 2 zone snare which could offer a rim shot in addition to the main snare hit sound.
The super compact design has pros and cons. On the plus side, it has an exteremely small footprint. The 3 tom drums are all attached to a single piece including the "brain". The pads are on the small side and non-adjustable. The bass drum and hi-hat pedals are also attached to a single base section, which means their placement is also non adjustable.
On my 1st unit the hi-hat pedal dveloped a short. This meant having to return the whole set. MF, as expected, handled this sprofessionaly. As I felt the unit could do enough of what I need to do, I chose to exchange it for the same model rather than to upgrade to a pricier set.
For a rank beginner, or someone like myself who wants to use it primarily as a MIDI trigger unit, I'd recommend it. There's really nothing else similar at this price point.
If you understand the limitations before you buy and have and have the right applicatio for it, you probably won't be dissapointed.

Before you buy, note the following 1. It does not have a line out, only phone output. The phone output signal is very weak (low volume) even at maximum volume. I tried different headphones. It does not deliver enough output signal power to be connected to the input of an amplifier. Therefore you must keep your drum music to yourself... think about it. 2. You only get the full response out of each pad if you hit the pad exactly in the center. This is worse at the snare drums. 3. The ride cymbal does not sound when played together with the kick drum. This happens when you hit both at the exact same time. 4. It is difficult to get full response from the hi-hat closed and ride cymbal, even after adjusting the individual pad volume to max (12.7). Crash and hi-hat open are ok. You need to hit an exact region of the cymbals in order to get a good sound out of it. It really sucks! 5. I have not yet tried the MIDI USB interface.I will update the review as soon as I have it tested. 6. Please note the pads are rubber and they get outworn if you hit them strong (which you will naturally do due to the lack of response from the pads).

Great value and starter!

By Mark

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I was surprised at all the sound options and value. This is probably the BEST value at this price for a beginner kit for any age. There are some minor issues with adjustment and range but I haven't even explored it thoroughly yet. All the family members have banged on it and we are having a great time.

Great Beginner Set

By WILLIAM FAHRNER

from Chatham, ontario

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I've purchased a couple of these. One for a 5 yr old in my Church who's just started playing drums. I also picked up a set for my "Man Cave Studio" to complement my Guitars, Keyboard and various other musical equipment. I've got mine hooked up to a little 10w Behringer Amp. They work great right out of the box. Make sure you use stereo so that you get the full range of the cymbals etc. I got one set for $118 and another one for $159. Not bad!

I Love This Thing

By DAVID CHAPMAN

from Oceanside, CA

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I'm not a drummer by any means but I love to let the agression out and have some fun. I've owned sets in the past but I really dig this one to mess around with. As others said, the volume out is very light, but I use headphones so it's no big deal. Just crank up the volume. Overall, for the price, I love it. I would love a set of Roland V Drums but just can't justify that expense. At $179 shipped this was a no brainer. If you want a cool little practice kit that has a tiny footprint, pick this sucker up. You can't beat it. Thanx David

o.k many people have written it cheap, its a toy blah blah blah. what do you want, a drum set ? buy a real one or an expensive one fool. I am not a drummer, not even good BUT.... I wanted something that can mimic a set. it can. can you get it to sound good.? you can. Does it have usb to computer so you can trigger stuff on your dAW .yes. Will it break? only time will tell. GET the gold plan from MF then. I think its dynamic and responsive enough considering its price. I think for the price you cant beat it. Is it perfect?no depending on your needs it will suffice. if your mr pro or pro wannabee you might be disappointed IM NOT. thanks Simmons and MF

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

I got a condition 2 used kit, for my home studio, so I could lay down drum tracks. It's everything I need. Condition is excellent. Only small comment on the negative side is that it's pretty light weight; an adult can get the whole kit rocking seriously if you're not careful. But overall I'm very pleased.

Begginers will give up on drumming

      By Karolie Nobre Grassi

      from Dearborn MI

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

Believe me, this drum kit is horrible. The drums are non responsive, you need to hit hard the exactly center of the pad to get some sound out of it. The hi-hats are impossible to play. The cymbals will mute if you hit the bass drum at the same time. I told you.

If you don't want to spend much money, use the compact drums set. I played these and they felt like they would break in half. They wobbled all over. They have the exact feel of a "rock band" video game set of drums... Maybe not that good. JUNK

Comments about Simmons SDXpress Compact 5-Piece Electronic Drum Kit:

Great starter kit, especially for kids due to its compact size. I got mine hooked up to a small cheap amp and get good sound out of it with volume maxed on the amp and the kit. My favorite use of it is to have my iphone playing music through headphones while I play along on the kit.

The use of the console buttons could be easier. You have to press and hold multiple buttons to make certain things happen.
