Overview

The Simmons SD1000 is a 5-piece electronic drum kit that appeals to the senses of the seasoned drummer, while appealing to the budget of the working or hobbyist musician. The setup is powered by the SD1000 Sound Module, which features 99 drum kits (55 preset, 44 user), 516 voices, 210 songs and a large collection of classic sounds. The module is also loaded with rehearsal tools like a programmable metronome, an auxiliary input (for MP3 or otherwise), 10 trigger inputs and a headphone output for quiet rehearsal.

The pads offer a sensitive and authentic feel while V.A.R. (Variable Attack Response) provides realistic response by triggering different samples for different velocities and drum rolls. Variable Attack Response combines more internal memory and intelligent sample triggering across 4 different velocity zones for each trigger input. The result is natural dynamics, smooth decay times which eliminates artificial-sounding "machine gun" playback or ghost notes when playing rolls. Additionally, the multi-position hi-hat foot controller produces different responses for open, closed or half-open positions.

The Simmons SD1000KIT features all-new Simmons components: SD1000 sound module, eight S1000 Series pads, new multi-position hi-hat controller, and a sharp looking, anodized-blue aluminum rack. If a big kit is your style, this e-kit is compatible with all S1000 single or multi-zone pads.

FEATURES

  • SD1000 Sound Module with 99 drum kits, 516 voices, 210 presets and 100 user songs
  • Advanced V.A.R. technology for authentic response
  • Expanded sample ROM
  • S1000 series pads
  • Multi-position hi-hat foot controller
  • Programmable sequencer with a 7-track capacity
  • MP3, USB and MIDI connectivity
  • 128MB of memory

I bought this set, yes because it was on sale, but also because drumming is my passion. I also have a 2 year old and a full time job aka NO PERSONAL TIME. Nap time = Drum time! These have amazing pitches and the dual zone cymbals are amazing. The 3rd tom has multi-zone so the rim actually doubles as a mini splash and other sound effects. You can full customize your own set, plug your phone into the back of the brain and headphones to the front and jam to your favorites from back in the day. Quality is 10 for 10. The heads are rubberized and have an amazing feel to them along with the hi-hats and cymbals. The set does not come with a throne or kick pedal so be aware of that. I actually preferred that though, it allows you to get your oh style instead of a generic set. Setup took about 20 minutes by myself and I was jammin in no time! If you're thinking about getting the set I'd say its worth every cent!

The looks and price of this kit seem attractive, but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you like carrying huge boxes back and forth from the store. In my experience, the kit sounded fine for a week or two after purchase. Then the pads started breaking down one by one. A cymbal pad would cut out entirely. Then you'd get the dreaded crossover whereby you hit a tom pad but hear the snare drum. Then another cymbal pad (or a specific zone) would go out, etc. Very soon, the kit was unusable. So overall, the quality of this e-kit is simply absent. Guitar Center staff was great to work with in replacing the defective kit under warranty, but after having to do so TWICE, I gave up on this manufacturer.

    Great kit!!!

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

This is my first drum kit and it is amazing! When we bought the kit we bought a 2 year warranty. The warranty covers anything that you do to the kit. I mean you can blow it up and it will be replaced. So far the only problem I have had with the kit is my hi-hat. Called simmons and in 3 to 4 days I had a new hi-hat and my door. This kit has a lot of awesome features... you just have to learn how to work them. I also bought the simmons DA50 speaker and it has an amazing sound. It also gives me the option to plug in a mp3 to play along with. Over all I would recommend this kit to anyone!!!

    Breaks down to often

    By ALEX QUINTANILLA

    from Euless, Texas

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

The only thing that saves this kit from a 1 star is the fact that you can make your own drum kit and you can adjust the pads where you want them. Other then that, not worth the money. When I first got the kit, there was a piece missing, and no coord to connect my module to my computer. 2nd, The cymbal pads are constantly breaking on me (just simple stop responding) and the tom and kick are headed in that direction also, not to mention I've already had my module replaced. and I'm exactly the heaviest hitter either. If you could save up for a better kit, or just avoid this one, I would.

    Old drummer

    By Bob Drabik

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I've been considering buying a set of electronic drums for at least 10 years. They are only for my enjoyment. I hook up my laptop for songs I enjoy to play along with. The only negative I've encountered is the high-hat pedal. It doesn't have enough of an adjustment for simple playing. I'll contact the factory to see what I can do. But, overall, as a fun set to play I truly can't ask for more! As a young kid I had a Ludwig set of drums emulating the type of the time. Late 60's early 70's. The sounds these provide are pretty cool! I would definitely recommend this set to the folks that know how to play and would like some new things to fool around with!

Would be a fine kit if the pads lasted more then 2 day's

    By Tom C

    from NH

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I bought this kit because I didn't want to spend $1000 plus for the amount I use them and they sounded OK in the store. I got it home, played for a couple of hours night 1, fine tuned the triggers and got it to work OK, not great. The high hat is just terrible and you have to really change the way you play to get it to do what it should. Even then the sound quality is like a poor MP3 on the high hat. The Tom's, bass and snare sound very good. The rim on the snare however sounds terrible in just about every mode. The following night I played for another 2 hours and the ride just died. I swapped cables to verify it was the ride itself and it was. After a web search it seems this is very common which is too bad. I liked the setup, it gave me infinate positioning possibilities and could live with the sound for the price. I'm returning because if I lost 1 pad in 4 hours, I cannot imagine what it would be like after a year of ownership.

Couldn't ask for a better way to get back into drumming

    By james shepherd

    from Birmingham, AL

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Hadn't picked up sticks in years, but wandered into the Guitar Center in Birmingham, AL the other day and thought I'd walk through the drum zone. I have bought lots of audio gear from GC (I'm a TV producer), but hadn't looked at drums because I knew I would have noise issues with the family. I started pecking on the digitals, and found myself really attracted to playing again. That's the full story of how I fell off the wagon-percussion wise. With the SD-1000 5-piece on sale -and the DA 50 monitor included, it was too good to pass up. And I'm very pleased with what I got for the money. It was simple to setup - if you've ever assembled a desktop computer, you can put together digital drum kits. And the control unit is pretty intuitive although you will have to do some digging into the manual if you want to change individual elements-I found the cymbals too-soft, so I did some digging and found out how to change those settings. It has been a few weeks since I got my kit, but I'm really happy that I picked it up when I did. I have added a fourth (floor) tom and additional crash cymbal and have a kit that's perfectly capable of any sort of playing I want to do. As a 70's era rock and roll guy, I've realized a lot's changed since my maple Ludwig kit, and I'm really enjoying the tired wrists and joints that have reminded me I'm really out of practice. The Birmingham percussion guys are great - and I couldn't be happier with my kit. If you've debated getting back into drumming, give the digital kits a serious look. Quiet when you need them to be, and capable of putting out enough sound through the ams to play along with live musicians, too. There are only four stars instead of five because I'm not current enough to rate all the kits available. But they've more than suited my needs.

This is a great product. I saw a review where somebody said "I hit hard, and this thing stopped working". you don't have to hit hard at all, just up the volume and it's great. So many ways to change the sounds, great for recording or playing live. The buttons work great too. If i had to bring this to a show all I do is lift it up, and bring it to the show. It's so much easier to move than a real drumset, and this is better than a real drumset because it's over 500 sounds to make your own set. Easy to use.

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Yes I just brought the Simmons SD1000 electric Drum kit on 3/28/13. And I give it four stars I like it so far. I upgraded from SD7 and the only problem I have with this kit so far is the crosstalk ability. I am still trying to learn this function other than that I am satisfied with my new SD1000 I would recommend it to any drummer or drummers to be. I like that it have choke ability on the cymbal pad. Along with the SD1000 A got the Simmons DA50W drum amplifier Sounds good.

      Good Experience

      By James Hunter

      from West Palm Beach Fla

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I always do all the research I can before I make a major purchase of any musical equipment. I chose the Simmons because it seemed to be the best bang for the buck. I went to Guitar center in West Palm Beach and the salesman I don't know his name but he was a really tall guy. Very cool did not pressure me to buy anything . He had me sit down to the demo model they had in the store. I played the drums for a bit listened to all the different kits that were already in the module. They sounded good. So I bought a set of them . Since I use them in my group and they seem ok. I have to tweak some of the sounds but overall they are a good buy for the price. There is one thing though, The hihat is really mushy. I don't like it very much. I will most likely replace it with a different one. Don't be afraid to buy this .. It is pretty good

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I have had this drum kit since Summer 2013 and I have used it for not even and hour. The pads that it comes with are HORRIBLE! I get a snare sound when I tap on the crash and a crash sound when I hit the snare. I also get a tom sound with the ride. Also you can't change the built in metronome. Its default is a man saying 1 2 3 4. It is HORRIBLE! I save you $700! Since I still have my warranty, I am returning it!

Sounded okay the first time playing. Second time jamming the hi hat stopped functioning and every time I hit the hi hat or snare it triggered the cymbal. The sound samples are very poor quality and really annoying even for just a practice kit. The kit I received didn't put out any power, even turned all the way up and every amp I tried it on was very quiet. When played through head phones you will never hear the sounds over the clicking of the pads.

Bought this kit about a week ago and I'm very happy with it thus far. I've been putting the base kit through the paces and it's really responding well so far. The only minor complaint is that the hi-hat pedal seems a little soft. That might be something I need to adjust in the settings though so I'm not holding it against the kit just yet.

        Hi Hat is terrible

        By Joshua Cockerham

        from Beavercreek, Ohio

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

Don't be fooled by the set's good looks like I was. The hi-hat pedal on this thing is terrible. It rarely works when you're trying to mute it with the pedal. You practically have to stomp on it in order to get any results. Also, when hitting the actual "cymbal" with your stick, it is very soft/quiet compared to the other pads. If it were not for the hi-hat, I would give the drum set a much better review. The actual drum pads sound pretty good when going through a decent monitor. Unfortunately, you kind of need to keep time on the hi-hat and it does not do its job.

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I have been wanting an electric kit for practice at the house so i dont have to drive to the studio. They put this set on sale a couple weeks ago and threw in an da 50 monitor. easy set up, all kinds of sounds and kits. get a decent over the ear headphones, plug in your phone or mp3, pick a set and practice. it is so nice to be able to practice whenever i want and not disturb the rest of the family. yes the hi-hat is slow some times and i need another crash, but for the money and what i need it to do i have been very pleased. i am really looking forward to hooking it up to our sound system some day to see how it sounds through a PA system. i have only been playing this set for a couple of weeks, but if i had to do over, i would still buy this product.

Comments about Simmons SD1000 5-Piece Electronic Drum Set:

I have been playing the SD1000 for about one and one half years and still have mixed emotions regarding this set. On the surface, it looks pretty good. The pre-loaded kits give you a lot of versatility even before you start tweaking them. The rack and mounts allow for almost infinite adjustment and arrangement. The toms, snare, and bass pads sound pretty good right out of the box, but the cymbals are less than stellar. The hi-hat and pedal are lacking, to put it kindly. Initially, I had issues with varying volumes of different pads within each kit. After much adjustment and tweaking, I have been able to correct most of that. I added the expansion kit, and the triple-zone snare and triple-zone ride cymbal were huge improvements over the originals. The crash cymbals sound decent on crashes but are terrible for rolls and swells. The ride is some better in that aspect but still not good. The hi-hat has a flat sound and is unpredictable. The pedal also isn't very responsive. I have had issues with ghost notes, and occasional cross channeling. Once again, with a lot of tweaking, most of this can be corrected but not all of it. I would prefer mesh heads over the rubber ones, but that is a personal preference issue. There are also two serious reliability issues. I have had to replace 2 crash cymbals, the hi-hat, and one tom pad in 1 1/2 years. Also, the plastic mounts hold well, but the plastic wing bolt attachments will come off the lugs. Fortunately, this leaves a nice square metal lug which a common drum key will fit. The customer service from Guitar Center has been great.

Overall, I gave the set 3 stars in spite of it's shortcomings, because it is very versatile, has many good features, sounds pretty good, and even after you buy a bass pedal and throne, it comes in well under 1000 bucks. If Simmons could correct some electrical problems and durability issues, the SD1000 would be a very good product. I would like to recommend this set but unfortunately, can't.
