Overview

The Simmons SD1000 is a 5-piece electronic drum kit that appeals to the senses of the seasoned drummer, while appealing to the budget of the working or hobbyist musician. The setup is powered by the SD1000 Sound Module, which features 99 drum kits (55 preset, 44 user), 516 voices, 210 songs and a large collection of classic sounds. The module is also loaded with rehearsal tools like a programmable metronome, an auxiliary input (for MP3 or otherwise), 10 trigger inputs and a headphone output for quiet rehearsal.

The pads offer a sensitive and authentic feel while V.A.R. (Variable Attack Response) provides realistic response by triggering different samples for different velocities and drum rolls. Variable Attack Response combines more internal memory and intelligent sample triggering across 4 different velocity zones for each trigger input. The result is natural dynamics, smooth decay times which eliminates artificial-sounding "machine gun" playback or ghost notes when playing rolls. Additionally, the multi-position hi-hat foot controller produces different responses for open, closed or half-open positions.

The Simmons SD1000KIT features all-new Simmons components: SD1000 sound module, eight S1000 Series pads, new multi-position hi-hat controller, and a sharp looking, anodized-blue aluminum rack. If a big kit is your style, this e-kit is compatible with all S1000 single or multi-zone pads.

Features
  • SD1000 Sound Module with 99 drum kits, 516 voices, 210 presets and 100 user songs
  • Advanced V.A.R. technology for authentic response
  • Expanded sample ROM
  • S1000 series pads
  • Multi-position hi-hat foot controller

The only thing that saves this kit from a 1 star is the fact that you can make your own drum kit and you can adjust the pads where you want them. Other then that, not worth the money. When I first got the kit, there was a piece missing, and no coord to connect my module to my computer. 2nd, The cymbal pads are constantly breaking on me (just simple stop responding) and the tom and kick are headed in that direction also, not to mention I've already had my module replaced. and I'm exactly the heaviest hitter either. If you could save up for a better kit, or just avoid this one, I would.

Pads and playability don't last

By Don

from Albuquerque, New Mexico

The looks and price of this kit seem attractive, but I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you like carrying huge boxes back and forth from the store. In my experience, the kit sounded fine for a week or two after purchase. Then the pads started breaking down one by one. A cymbal pad would cut out entirely. Then you'd get the dreaded crossover whereby you hit a tom pad but hear the snare drum. Then another cymbal pad (or a specific zone) would go out, etc. Very soon, the kit was unusable. So overall, the quality of this e-kit is simply absent. Guitar Center staff was great to work with in replacing the defective kit under warranty, but after having to do so TWICE, I gave up on this manufacturer.

DON'T GET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Jake Rohlwing

from IL

I have had this drum kit since Summer 2013 and I have used it for not even and hour. The pads that it comes with are HORRIBLE! I get a snare sound when I tap on the crash and a crash sound when I hit the snare. I also get a tom sound with the ride. Also you can't change the built in metronome. Its default is a man saying 1 2 3 4. It is HORRIBLE! I save you $700! Since I still have my warranty, I am returning it!

Would be a fine kit if the pads lasted more then 2 day's

By Tom C

from NH

I bought this kit because I didn't want to spend $1000 plus for the amount I use them and they sounded OK in the store. I got it home, played for a couple of hours night 1, fine tuned the triggers and got it to work OK, not great. The high hat is just terrible and you have to really change the way you play to get it to do what it should. Even then the sound quality is like a poor MP3 on the high hat. The Tom's, bass and snare sound very good. The rim on the snare however sounds terrible in just about every mode. The following night I played for another 2 hours and the ride just died. I swapped cables to verify it was the ride itself and it was. After a web search it seems this is very common which is too bad. I liked the setup, it gave me infinate positioning possibilities and could live with the sound for the price. I'm returning because if I lost 1 pad in 4 hours, I cannot imagine what it would be like after a year of ownership.

Excellent practice kit

By CHRIS CAPRARO

from Ardmore, OK

I have been wanting an electric kit for practice at the house so i dont have to drive to the studio. They put this set on sale a couple weeks ago and threw in an da 50 monitor. easy set up, all kinds of sounds and kits. get a decent over the ear headphones, plug in your phone or mp3, pick a set and practice. it is so nice to be able to practice whenever i want and not disturb the rest of the family. yes the hi-hat is slow some times and i need another crash, but for the money and what i need it to do i have been very pleased. i am really looking forward to hooking it up to our sound system some day to see how it sounds through a PA system. i have only been playing this set for a couple of weeks, but if i had to do over, i would still buy this product.

Couldn't ask for a better way to get back into drumming

By james shepherd

from Birmingham, AL

Hadn't picked up sticks in years, but wandered into the Guitar Center in Birmingham, AL the other day and thought I'd walk through the drum zone. I have bought lots of audio gear from GC (I'm a TV producer), but hadn't looked at drums because I knew I would have noise issues with the family. I started pecking on the digitals, and found myself really attracted to playing again. That's the full story of how I fell off the wagon-percussion wise. With the SD-1000 5-piece on sale -and the DA 50 monitor included, it was too good to pass up. And I'm very pleased with what I got for the money. It was simple to setup - if you've ever assembled a desktop computer, you can put together digital drum kits. And the control unit is pretty intuitive although you will have to do some digging into the manual if you want to change individual elements-I found the cymbals too-soft, so I did some digging and found out how to change those settings. It has been a few weeks since I got my kit, but I'm really happy that I picked it up when I did. I have added a fourth (floor) tom and additional crash cymbal and have a kit that's perfectly capable of any sort of playing I want to do. As a 70's era rock and roll guy, I've realized a lot's changed since my maple Ludwig kit, and I'm really enjoying the tired wrists and joints that have reminded me I'm really out of practice. The Birmingham percussion guys are great - and I couldn't be happier with my kit. If you've debated getting back into drumming, give the digital kits a serious look. Quiet when you need them to be, and capable of putting out enough sound through the ams to play along with live musicians, too. There are only four stars instead of five because I'm not current enough to rate all the kits available. But they've more than suited my needs.

Good sounding kit, however, it's poorly made

By Alex Fleck

from Crystal MN

I'm new to electronic drums, but I was looking for a kit at Guitar Center when I stumbled upon these drums. They had them set up to play and I really liked how it sounded, but I noticed when I hit the "ride" that the furthest tom would also trigger. I figured this was due to ware and tear. I purchased the kit and once I got it home I played it for a few days, I noticed the same thing happens with the high hats and snare, at first I assumed it could have been that I was playing harder than I should have been so I tried playing softly and it happened again. I then looked up other reviews online and they all had a related problem, the same problem I had, poorly made or else the module was messed up in some way. The pros of this kit are: -Sounds good -Has a feel similar to an acoustic kit -many different default kits -you can add your own kits to it. The cons of this kit: -Poorly made -[possibly] extreme sensitivity -hard to play somewhat softer

Hi Hat is terrible

By Joshua Cockerham

from Beavercreek, Ohio

Don't be fooled by the set's good looks like I was. The hi-hat pedal on this thing is terrible. It rarely works when you're trying to mute it with the pedal. You practically have to stomp on it in order to get any results. Also, when hitting the actual "cymbal" with your stick, it is very soft/quiet compared to the other pads. If it were not for the hi-hat, I would give the drum set a much better review. The actual drum pads sound pretty good when going through a decent monitor. Unfortunately, you kind of need to keep time on the hi-hat and it does not do its job.
