Overview

The Simmons DA200S houses a 100-watt low-frequency amp with two 50-watt mid- and high-frequency amps. The low-frequency amp powers a heavy-duty 12" down-firing sub-woofer speaker and a specially designed slot port for bottom-end projection. Left and right mid- and high-frequency amps drive 2-6-1/2" mid-range speakers and 2-1/2" high-frequency tweeters.

The DA200S maintains the integrity of the stereo drum signal from input to speakers (including line outs and extension speaker jacks). This provides a broad stereo field that positions your drums at their correct sonic locations, providing a realistic audio experience for you and your audience, whether you're in the studio or playing live.

Hi!! I bought this drum amp (Simmons DA200S) brand new from G.C. a few months ago. My set is an Alesis DM10x. I never crank the volume up very loud and never have. At times when I hit the bass drum, I get a popping sound from the speaker. What the heck?!!? I never have changed my bass drum setting on the drum module, so I am not sure why I am getting this popping noise. Besides the popping, the amp does sound pretty good. I was hoping it would produce an even lower sound because I would like to "feel" the kick more. Today I added a 12" non-powered speaker to it hoping that I could get more of a kick.....so that I could hopefully "feel" it. Nope, didn't do the trick. This amp gets a 3 from me due to the popping sound, and the low end just doesn't quite cut it for me. Don't get me wrong, it is a good amp...the sounds are great....but if it could go even lower then it does, that would be awesome. Maybe a 15 inch subwoofer would do the trick. Oh well.... Time to call G.C. to see what I can do in regards to get the popping fixed. Thanks for reading this! -M

Lots of Bang for little Bucks!

By Chaz

from Stockbridge, GA

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I bought this amp a couple of weeks ago to use with my Roland TD-20s. After spending many hours researching and reading reviews, I was sold on this unit. It out-performs all other (drum) amps I've tried or listened to. I love the full, powerful lows that you can "feel" from the subwoofer when kicking the bass; the strong, clear mid-levels from the toms; the crisp and bright highs from the hi-hats, ride, and crash cymbals. Best of all is the price! After investing so much money on my TD-20s, I didn't want to wait until I could afford a "high-end" amp so I checked into this one and a couple of competitors. As it turns out, I feel I got a "high-end" amp at a "low-end" price!

I bought this monitor to play with my Handsonic 10, and boy does it rock. I play for a church band and our church is a huge building. This monitor was heard over other speakers and PA systems. VERY GOOD BUY! Very strong and crisp.

Not Too Bad

By Brian Stewart

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

This was an excellent match with my Roland T4 electronic drumset. This thing has plenty of sound coming out of it and has a pretty small footprint. One thing you need when purchasing this monitor is two cables for attaching to your drumset. Great price for a nice monitor.

I was looking at the Roland Pm-30, when I stumbled on the DA200s. I am using a Roland TD-20 and this amp out performs the pm-30 and is by far cheaper. If you are looking at the pm-30, try this first

Da Bomb!

By George Johnson

from Seattle. WA.

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I'm a drummer/vocalist and I'm also sound engineer. I'm a perfectionist and I'm very picky. After trying much more expensive systems including the new Roland CM-220 2.1 CUBE Monitor System which costs $700 and sounds like a cheap car stereo I finally gave this one a try. Not only does this little powerhouse provide a big, phat accurate sound this versatile unit also works equally well as a vocal monitor/small PA due to its excellent sound quality. I would highly recommend this. I'm usually not a big fan of Simmons but with this they hit it out of the park! There is one little problem with it that Simmons should address. The inputs are not quite to spec and some plugs/cords don't make good contact as a result. I remedied the problem by slipping a 1/4in. 'O' ring onto the male plug ends of my cords so they don't go too deep.

I purchased this amp for my new Roland TK-20 for practice in my house. This amp is amazingly clear compared to it's cheaper one speaker counterpart. The cymbals sound very natural and the thump from my kick has enough bass to feel it like a real drum kit. Spend the extra money to get this model, you won't regret it.

    Great design, good sound

    By Jay

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I went to the store to try out some different amps in this price range. The bass in the Behringer ULTRATONE K3000FX was much more real than the Simmons, but I chose the DA200s for a few reasons: 1. The front is slanted up, towards my ears, so I can hear it. 2. The built-in direct box has attenuation. 3. The stereo speakers actually make a difference. 4. Anything significantly smaller or lighter can't handle Bass drum sounds. My only gripes: 1. The headphone jack is 1/8" 2. When headphones are plugged in the speaker is turned off. I would rather have separate volume knobs. 3. The snare drum doesn't sound real. Overall, for the price, It is outstanding. Several of us in the Drum department agreed that the Simmons sounded significantly better than a Roland amp that cost twice as much. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because for just a little more money the Behringer ULTRATONE K3000FX sounds better. FYI- I use it with a Zendrum and BFD2 sounds

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I have this amp paired up with the Alesis Performance pad, using the percussion sounds and hand claps along with my acoustic drumset. It totally cuts thru in live situations. I like the fact it has stereo XLR outputs, seperate output volume and ground lift. The slanted cab is perfect in front or behind, aims the sound directly at the ears. The knobs have dimples in them so you can reach with the drumstick and make adjustments. Sound quality is outstanding for this type of amp in this price range. More shows to come, so I'll have another review to tell how it's holding up.

    a little beast!

    By Lowell

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I originally ordered a used Simmons DA200S amp/monitor from the Guitar Center Used Gear site, and somewhere during delivery, the package was somehow badly damaged, and was sent back to the store I originally ordered from...I then called the store to let them know it was headed back their way (because I had been tracking it via UPS tracking) The manager of that store was MORE THAN GENEROUS to offer me the same amp (NEW from their warehouse at the SAME PRICE as the damaged old USED one!!!!)When it arrived, I cranked it up to find out I had a LITTLE BEAST on my hands....(this monitor/amp got the police called 10 minutes into my solo)....Well, all I can say is HAT's OFF to Guitar Center, for their generosity, and HAT'S OFF to Simmons for making the DA200S capable of delivering a booming low , a mellow (BUT LOUD) midrange, and crisp, distinct highs...also, the inputs/outputs are ready-to run through any P.A. system...It would compliment and broaden the sound of ANY electronic set, and I would recommend this for any use, whether it be a church or a rock venue, and would recommend the Simmons DA200S monitor/amp to ANY drummer...!!

    This amp hits hard

    By randy schmidt

    from Fresno ca

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I have had this amp for a couple of years now and it has been loud and proud I push this thing to the limit on a regular basis. Highs are a little harsh at times and need to be dialed back but mids and lows are killer. I am only writing this review because I was wondering if Simmons had come out with a new amp during this time I seen a few reviews with people stating they lost the low end on the amp what ever term they use blown burned out. This amp has so much power the voice coil on the woofer will get hot and blow the winding will literally melt and no longer function. The amp has not blown up or been damaged. I have done this twice with my amp and have rewound the voice coil on the woofer the second time I notice the surround has started to crack and will cause the voice coil to rub and give it problems rewound with a little heavier wire repaired the surround cracks and she is hitting harder than even. I have decided the next time to replace the woofer with a quality woofer upgrade I believe it was 8 ohms and a lot of room to put a woofer with a way bigger magnet. So if you lose your bottom end don't panic time for a woofer repair or replacement .

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

This is a great little amp. I have a Yamaha DTXtreme III and it sounds great through the amp. The separate sub control allows you to dial in the right amount of low end for the bass drum and toms. It will also run multiple instruments at once. My guitarist ran his acoust-electric Martin through it and it sounded amazing. He used the aux. input and had control over his own volume levels. This would be great for small gigs where we don't have room to set up all of our regular equipment.

      By Dave Tallent

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I own a Simmons SD9K Electronic Drum Set. I went without an amp for almost a year, running my kit through my former band's PA. After a gig, another drummer said he hadn't been able to hear my ride cymbal or hi hat through the mix. The kick drum would also drop out due to a sketchy subwoofer. I bought the Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor in November, 2009, ultimately changed bands, and problems solved. Have used it as my rehearsal amp, my stage monitor when the SD9K is plugged into a mixer, and multiple times as my sole amplification at gigs, both in and outdoors. Prefer a mix of electronic and acoustic drums, though I've used the Simmons kit exclusively on several occasions. In either configuration, the monitor is solid. Full, tweakable sound, particularly on the low end. Cuts through any ruckus the guitar players create. Completely satisfied.

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

I purchased the DA200S for the purpose of amplifying the samples and drum sounds from my Roland SPD-SX when we play at venues with sub-par or no PA systems (we play a lot of house/warehouse/basement shows in Chicago).

At first, I was very impressed with the Simmons-- the sound quality was amazing; however, I was a bit concerned with its small size (also, it is surprisingly heavy for it's size, and with only a handle on top it can be a bit awkward to lug around). It reproduced our sounds, samples and sequences with clarity I had not heard before-- we even ran our Prophet 6 synth through it, and it sounded incredible. However, my fears about its small size were realized almost immediately at our first show with it... It was just barely loud enough, struggling to cut over our 5x10 bass cab and other instruments. After two shows with the input and output cranked, the right channel failed.

I would say this is a fantastic amp for practice, and for small (club/living room/basement) venues if you are not a loud band. Do not write it off as a keyboard amp-- I thought it sounded better with a synth running through it than anything else. I think its separate internal amplifiers for the different frequency ranges does an impressive job at keeping the sound from getting muddy, even with a lot of sounds being pushed through it. But again, at 200 combined Watts, it's pretty loud, but not loud enough.

Another con: the inputs are limited. You get one drum input that is split into left and right channel (left for mono) and a stereo AUX input. Unfortunately, the AUX input is a stereo-only jack, so if you want to run a mono signal into the aux, you need to use a mono-stereo adapter, or you'll only get sound out of one channel... I don't know why they didn't just do R/L input like they used on the drum input.

I'm giving it a four star review because it did sound great-- It just wasn't the right amp for us.

      Good Vdrum amp.

      By Ken

Comments about Simmons DA200S Electronic Drum Set Monitor:

Started off with a Roland PM-10 amp for a Roland TD-9 drum setup. The PM-10 was way underpowered, even for home practice. Did more amp research on www.Vdrum.com and this site. Returned for a Simmons DA200S. In this particular unit there was a noticible high frequency hiss, and the power lamp went out. Returned the original unit for the same model and have been quite pleased with this amp. There is a slight hiss to this unit, but, it is very low and nothing like the previous Simmons amp. The amp plays well at a volume that is adequate for home practice and small, louder endeavors. The amp has a good sound to it, in my opinion, with a range that I am happy with. As a test of the aux input, a friend of mine plugged his guitar in, and we were both able to play at a substantial volume that would be good for jamming and other small get togethers.
