Overview

Diamond gold, first class all the way. Apart from its stunning appearance, however, the Silverstein ligature has numerous radical design attributes that provide real world benefits. Choose type of instrument from dropdown.

The patented design is such that the Ligature covers a minimum amount of surface area on the reed, while still being able to maintain an incredibly firm grip. The Tension Adjustment pulls up (rather than just pinching the sides like most other ligatures) and the remarkable design allows the tension to ease throughout the cord evenly over time. The result is the purest sound formed from the natural vibrations of the reed. The custom engineered cord meanwhile is designed to facilitate the natural vibrations without adding to them in any way, and the core has been constructed and quality tested to never stretch.

The eye-catching design of the Silverstein Ligature does more than just attract attention. Its form is a minimalistic approach to the concept and purpose of a ligature's function. From the grand concept of liberating a reed's natural vibrations, to the execution of the Ligature that does that and more, this is a machine worth your attention. The ligature for perfectionists.

The Silverstein Ligature was designed to give players the purest sound, to accompany musicians with the support and dedication they and their instruments deserve. The self-adjusting design adjusts itself and conforms to your mouthpiece over time, actually getting even better and growing with you.

Use the patented Fine Tuner Bars on the sides of the Ligature for unprecedented control. Moving the bars up and down will change the color and focus of your sound. No other ligature allows such an easy one-touch adjustment for the perfectionist in you.

The Moisture Retention feature provides real constant moisture directly to your reed. Soaking the Ligature before mounting can help reduce reed warpage during a performance by more than 50%, and helping your reeds last twice as long.

The unique features of the Silverstein Ligature were designed with the perfectionist musician in mind and is a true innovation. The bar has been raised; rethink what you knew to be truth about your sound and find out what the very best have begun to notice. Cutting edge technology with a delicate touch that truly amplifies your style, the Silverstein Ligature is the ultimate realization of what a ligature can and should do.

The 2nd Evolution: The Dotted Cord
The Silverstein Ligature was itself an innovative advancement of a classic concept: a minimalist cord-based ligature that liberated the most natural vibrations of the reed. The New Silverstein Ligature takes this concept further. After experimenting with new cord designs and alloys, the Silverstein Ligature has now adapted a cord that has been interspersed with a refined strand – a thinner thread that allows for even less contact and pressure with the reed while maintaining the Ligature’s trademark design and grip.

This makes all the difference. The redesigned cord allows for greater control, a more dynamic sound, and a richer tone. Taking inspiration from all the musicians who strive for perfection, Silverstein Works is relentless in our own pursuit of excellence.

Cryogenic
The Silverstein Works commitment to bringing technology to the modern artist introduces the Cryo4 Gold Silverstein Ligature.

The Cryogenic Treatment Process plunges the alloy of the Silverstein Ligature to a chilling -300∞F, greatly improving characteristics of the ligature by changing the crystal structure of the metal itself. The Cryogenic Process of the metal results in a more refined, homogeneous solid. This has a profound effect on the sound waves that travel through it: sound waves travel much faster and without loss through the more homogenized metal alloy, resulting in a richer, more natural sound with improved resonance.

Pleasantly Surprised

By Bart

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

This is the first review I've ever been moved to write...In recent years I've been able to afford experimenting with different setups after using the same Mouthpieces, Reeds, and Ligatures on my horns, Soprano thru Bari. In the band I've been playing with the past eight years I've needed to project more as I am relied upon to solo quite a bit. I started using Rovner Versa ligatures on all my horns a few years ago. I bought the Cryo4 and was amazed right off the bat the tonal difference and the projection. It was literally just easier to play. I never imagined a ligature could have such a profound impact. I can't tell you the (sound) difference between the Cryo or the less expensive standard ones Silverstein offers, but I can tell you this sounds and feels fantastic. I've been playing professionally for 48 years and know there is always room for improvement, this ligature rocks!

Great Ligature but...

By Joshua N.

from Urbandale

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

I was expecting a lot from a ligature worth $200, but was utterly disappointed when I received it. The ligature produces a great sound and is very eye-catching, but it is not much better than the other ligatures available on wwbw. The ligature is only able to play higher notes well whereas lower notes are airy and light. My older ligature, the Vandoren Optimum is much better that the Cryo 4. I recommend spending your money on a different ligature.

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

I had previously played on an Vandoren Optimum ligature, and I had been experiencing some problems with the ligature clamping down on my reed and restricting it from vibrating. This caused me to squeak quite a bit more than I'd like to, and I've been more and more attracted to the idea of a more german style ligature. I even got a string and began to make schnurs (german string ligatures)

In my research of the german style, I came across Sabine Meyer, and Wenzel Fuchs, both wonderful players, and they both play on this ligature (or some Silverstein ligature) So I decided to try it.

It's worth noting here that the unboxing experience was legendary. It truly felt like an experience, which is rather nice in this day and age.

Little did I know it was one of the best things I could have invested in. I had my very talented flautist friend join me for my first time playing with it, and she heard a huge difference, and I felt a huge difference. It was really very nice, there was so much more color and projection, and I squeaked so much less. I can't say enough good things about this ligature. Now, to try the new colored string!!!

Best that I've found

By doublerdad

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

Throughout a long career, I've tried a lot of ligatures for various clarinets and saxes. To my mind, the Silverstein Cryo4 is the best on the market today, at any price.

Silverstein takes the concept of the German string ligature, and with modern materials and technology makes it so that it as secure and non-slip as any metal ligature out there.

Some ligatures are "bright", and some are "dark", meaning they are designed to emphasize the high or low harmonics. What differentiates the Silverstein is that it is neither. It is overtone neutral, in that it emphasizes NO harmonics over any others, allowing all to resonate equally. The sound that results is YOUR sound, via the mouthpiece, not the ligature's.

The standard Silverstein is outstanding. I use it on all my doubles for quick response, easy articulation, and full tone.

I use the Cryo4 on clarinet, my primary instrument. It sounds even bigger than the standard, plus the extra adjustment bars can be moved back and forth allowing more reeds to work well, and giving a wide variety of colors to the sound. This is why I like the Silverstein better than the Ishimori, for example. With the Ishimori, one needs different finishes to achieve different tone colors. With the Cryo4, I can get all these different colors out of one ligature.

As a symphony player, it's quite reassuring to know that when switching between Bb and A clarinet quickly, the Silverstein absolutely will never slip, when adjusted correctly.

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

Wow, what a ligature! The price shocked me a little but I had a coupon, so I went for it. I feel like I'm getting more protection in my sound; my professor was very surprised at the difference in sound vs. my old Vandoren Klassik. The tightening mechanism is very effective, u can switch from Bb to A and back with ease(as long as I am reasonably careful). Worth the investment!

Mind-blown!

By Amy L

from Los Angeles, CA

Comments about Silverstein Works Cryo4 Gold Ligature:

As someone growing up without any sax lessons until college and now getting my master's degree in (classical/concert) sax performance, I know what it takes to get rid of many years of bad habits in order to play properly and I know exactly how I played at different stages of my training. I've come across many different sax players where their embouchure needs strengthening, that some part of their equipment setup needs work, or that they just need to blow more air and so they're not able to bring out the full potential of their overall setup. So if you have this $200 ligature but using it on a Mark VI with rotten pads, of course you can't hear the ligature shine. With that said, I'm a bit wary of the previous reviewer saying this sounds airy in the lower register. Maybe he just wasn't using enough air to push it through his horn. We've all had issues with low notes at some point in our training and we just don't know the full story. Here's my usual setup so it's a little more clear on how well this ligature worked for me: YAS-62I with Vandoren AL5, Vandoren Traditional 4, and a plain old regular Rovner ligature with the seams starting to unravel Here's how it works: Paperwork in the really fancy ligature box it came with says to put the side with the 3 rings in first so that the 2 rings are facing you. There are these small cushions under the screw so that it doesn't scratch your mouthpiece. It's recommended that you push the fine tuners towards the screw/away from the reed to get a darker tone (which I did). You don't have to tighten it too much because the cords will gradually loosen and adjust to fit the mouthpiece better. How it sounds: The first time I tried it, I had already warmed up my horn with my worn-out ligature so the first time using this fancy-schmancy ligature was as if I had taken out a century worth of earwax! I couldn't believe the clarity of my vibrato and overall tone - I'm now projecting so much better and it felt like I've been mumbling for a decade. The air I blow travels so easily into the horn. I played my full-range scales and my low Bb to altissimo A had me speechless. That day, I practiced for 5 hours because I didn't want to stop hearing how amazing I sound (although I did regret it right after). Overall thoughts: You probably won't truly appreciate this amazing ligature if you're still struggling with your embouchure and if you're not playing consistently on all ranges. Based on all the video reviews, I see this used mostly in jazz (tone clarity definitely helps for recording) and not much in classical repertoire (other than my instructor). I'm very amazed that it's not used more for concert repertoire and this lig is really for those perfectionists wanting to improve the little things that make the overall sound a notch better.
