Unlike one of the other reviewers who commented that the sm58 is "ok" for those who don't care how they sound, I couldn't disagree more! The sm58 may look plain but it's one of the most dependable durable microphones whether you're playing local clubs or touring miles from home. It is especially one of the best mics to have for those who care how they sound! I gig 2-4 times a week at many different venues in town that have all sorts of various acoustics to contend with and this mic provides consistent clean and crisp vocals with a lot of gain before feedback. I'm a drummer so the on-off switch is a good added feature and it's only a few dollars more than the sm58 without the on-off switch. I've had my 58 with the on-off switch for several months now and I've had no problems. I had an sm58 about 10 years ago and foolishly got rid of it so over the years I've tried many other mics from many other companies, some I thought were good like the Crown headset mic, the EV 767 and Audio Technica makes some good mics but very few overall compared to the sm58. The only other Shure vocal mic probably a little better is the Shure Beta 58 but it's also more expensive and for most vocalists it's not necessary. The regular 58 is simply a great mic at a decent price as is the sm57. Both have been around before most of us were even born and will probably still be sold at music stores long after we're gone.

Bought for business use for professional live events. Have not tested mics for live event yet. Picked up less than a week ago, and event isn't for several weeks. I have no idea how these will work for the event, or several events.

At least the replacement mics have a switch for on/ off. This is what we "thought" we bought at the store - only to get home and find out we had two boxes of mics without switches - that had to be go back to store as a return. Only then did we learn the store doesn't stock the type with on/off switches. (hmmm - shouldn't that have been told to us when we requested mics with on/off switches?!)

Great sound, but a little wary of the switch...

By Matt

from Manchester, NH

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

This is a great mic - it's tried and true and holds up to it's reputation. I have used it for a few live performances so far and have no complaints. Only thing is the switch doesn't seem very robust like the rest of the microphone. I haven't had any problems yet, but I think that Shure could have beefed up the switch a little more. Starting to wish that I had gotten the standard SM58 - I'm going to stick with the 58S, but I'm a little concerned that the switch might fail some day.

Awesome mic

By Chad Nicholson

from Exeter, CA

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

I am a PRCA rodeo announcer and have used the SM58 w/switch for years. It really brings out the bottom end of my voice like no other mic has. From rockin rodeos to jammin monster truck shows, its dynamic enough to still give unbelievable clarity even with blaring music behind us. It's also tough and can take alot of abuse. In fact, I put on the professional rodeo industry's top rated announcer's school and this is the mic that I recommend to all of my students. Thanks Shure for making such a great product!

slightly less sensitive

By TP

from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

Was surprised to see that there was a marked diferrence between my first regular sm58 and the newlly aquired, sm58s. Maybe in time the two mikes will come closer together in sensitivity? Other than that...it works well, and is built like a tank in construction...a good thing! TP

SM58S Performance

By Myk (The Way Cool Guy)

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

The SM58 microphone has been an industry standard for vocals for as long as I can remember. My work as a comedian needs the switch on and off feature and the quality only SM58 offers. Most performers do not need the on and off switch feature but where you want quality vocals and control over your microphones without using a sound person to set the levels this is what you need. Preset the volume on your PA and when it's stage time a flip of the switch gets your performance underway. SM58 is the choice of professionals. It always delivers year after year.

BEST VOCAL MICROPHONE AVAILABLE

By Gary McClenny

from Irving, TX

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

As a karaoke singer and former DJ, I got tired of using Nady and other cheap microphones due to the distortion in the sound and the pickup of noise. I bought a pair of SM58S (with switch) microphones about 3 years ago and have never looked back! They really are that good. I have been around sound systems for 30 years and have been told many times to buy only Shure microphones but did not listen due to budget restraints. I finally broke down and bought my very own Shure SM58S microphones and WOW, what a difference!!! There really is a difference. It is like night and day. No distortion. No background noise. No hissing, popping or sputtering! Just clean, crisp vocals. The microphone actually makes people think I can sing! All kidding aside---do not buy an inferior microphone to save a few bucks. Spend the money to do it right or don't do it at all!

One of the best vocal mics available!

By Jimmy

from Michigan

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

The Shure SM58S is a classic! This is been one of the most popular vocal mics for 30 years! They're extremely durable. I've owned several of them over the years, and no matter how many times they've been dropped, they still work! They have a warm, crisp sound that's perfect for live performance.

No EQ!

By Debapriya Banerjee

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

Here's a mic that translates your timbre as is. A flat frequency response is the best response! I'm seriously considering doubling my studio condensor with the SM58 for my recordings.

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

The SM58 sounds great. It's my favorite vocal mic. It's tough too. It's meant for the riggors of the road. It's actually built to withstand a drop or two or 10! The market is flooded with so called competition in the genre. I say the SM58 has no competition. It's a great mic thats built to travel. I've been gigging for 30 years. As a voacalist I own 2. One I have had for 20 years. The other I just got. I never thought of getting a back up. But what if it got lost or stolen? Now I have enought personal mics for the next 100 years! :-) Go with the best tool for the job I say. That's my opinion.

    SM58S Microphone

    By Robert Austin

    from Scottsdale, AZ

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

This microphone is incredibly well constructed, weighted for balance and heavy duty enough to take the bumps and bruises it endures. The on/off switch eliminates the possibility of a hot mic during set breaks and songs on stage. The vocal response of this mic fits all my needs from rock to ballads. It's smooth and sensitive when you need it but also lively and bright to handle all my bands requirements.

Great mic, but best for stands (not hands)

Comments about SM58S Mic with Switch:

Picked this over the SM58 because I thought the switch would come in handy. However the switch is plastic, not metal as it looked in the pictures I saw online, and travels too easily. I've noticed that I'll sometimes accidentally flip it while holding it. I recommend that you pick up the regular SM58 if you're looking for an in-hand mic. This model is best suited for stand use. Aside from the minor issue with the switch, it's a great mic. Solidly built and sounds excellent.

I have had several SM58's for 15+ years. Needed a "nice new one" to keep a clean image.
Works great. I gotta have the on/off switch to control any unwanted sounds picked up when mic is not in use. (usually my occasional sarcastic commentaries). Standard price I missed Shures' rebate offer.

Comments about Shure SM58S Mic with Switch:

Not a pro anymore (retired) but I used to be. SM58s were all we ever used for vocals, and SM57s for miccing acoustic instruments, amp cabinets, drums, etc - everything else. All I can say is - I spent about $100 on SM58s back in the '70s and '80s.... and they're still around $100. Nothing has changed - as far as I can tell they're just as rugged and just as good as ever. This mic has become the most-used vocal mic for a reason. They resist feedback onstage. They sound great. You can't kill 'em (and even if you do - it's a 2 minute job to solder in a new cartridge if necessary. There are a ton of competing great quality mics from EV, AT, etc etc... but they're not $100. You're gonna pay 2-3x the price for something that's only marginally better-sounding and most likely nowhere near as bulletproof.
