This is a must have mic for any active musician. This mic is excellent for stage use, but it is also very useful in a studio or project studio. This mic has been my main stage mic for over 15 years. The SM58 is known to be great for live use but it is also great to use on vocal recordings. The SM58 is also a great mic to use on a snare drum (especially since it is durable). The SM58 is built tough enough to stand up against years of abuse. If you play live you need to have this mic.

This thing has been the standard for so long. Now there are a lot of mics in the same price range that naturally try to improve on that benchmark. And they are better. The president uses a 57. Does that make it the best vocal speech mic? No, although the 57 is good for just about everything else. The 58 was originally part of a sound system that wasn't tuned quite right, so they compensated by giving the mic an eq scoop. Some people say they like the eq of the 58, but often the house eq will have a happy face eq curve to make up for the increased mids. The problem is, that now, with so many mics that are better than the 58, one doesn't stand out as a new stadard. But watch the latest performances of bands today. unless they are using a house system, or they don't care much for details, you will see a lot less people using the 58. One that I like is the EV N/D267a. Good clean sound, strong signal, and better feedback control. So search around and see what else is out there before you buy the same boring standard equipment.

THE mic

By Scott

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

If you are an active gigger, or recording artist, there is no doubt you've run across at least one of these mics. Extremely cheap, extremely reliable, and great sounding. Although this is mainly a vocal mic, i have used it for instruments, even drums, and gotten an acceptable sound(although we later layered the recordings). If you have big bucks, i would not recommend this mic, because there are many other expensive mics that would do vocals much better. However if you are a low budget musician such as myself, then i would highly recommend this mic for vocals, and as a last resort for instruments, although i would not recommend it if it can be avoided. Happy Rocking!

Still the best

By Backdrop Guitarist

from Dalls, TX

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I've had my SM58 for a few weeks now, and I don't know why I didn't have one sooner. When playing with my band, the vocals are clear, even though we're loud in a tiny little room. As far as live performance goes, you can't get any better than this in the price range.

Simply the best

By brian817

from Ft. Worth, TX

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

The Shure SM58 microphone is the most widely used microphone for vocals in any situation. This mic is always the first choice for vocals, but also sounds good on instruments, especially acoustic instruments like 6 or 12 string guitars and certain drums. The SM58 is a workhorse and built to hold up over years and years of constant use. It's simple to set up for live or recording use and so easy to afford.

Killer Sound, not so killer price

By IotaPhi823

from Undisclosed

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I just bought the SM58 Mic because I needed a new dynamic mic and i had a very tight budget. The person who helped me out told me that I would be 100% pleased with the mic and it sounds as great as its higher priced couterparts. At first I was sceptical But after getting home and plugging it into my trusy peavey I was blown away. This Mic has a very crisp clear high end sound. Buy it it's totally worth it.

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

This microphone is one of the best microphones I've ever used. Although the price is a little high it's still worth it. It's so clear to see why this microphone has been the industry standard for years.

BAD REPUTATION

By Jizzy

from St.louis

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

It's the industry standard, and there's a reason for that. Yes there are other mics that cost more or whatever, but I can guarantee you, no matter where you play at, or who you play with, everyone will respect this mic, and know that you take your craft seriously. And don't be fooled by the ranting about this being a "LIVE" mic, it can hold its own in the studio too, in fact it may out perform a "cheaper" brand condenser. You can't go wrong with buying this mic.

Best Mic IMO

By Mike

from Florida

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I purchased the Shure SM58 Mic with the intention of another cheap microphone, but i was wrong! this Mic can withstand a lot of abuse even though its accidental and it still sounds brand new every time i use it i recommend this beautiful Mic for any vocalist or for use on the snare drum. it was worth every penny, also great for live shows and band practice and recording in a studio SM58 #1.

BIG SAVINGS ON THE WORLD'S MOST POPULAR VOCAL MIC

By casio

from Dayton, TX

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

Trusted by top industr professionals since 1966, the Shure SM58 was adopted by early rock n' roll musicians because it offered the right combination of rugged reliability and excellent sound quality. It quikly became the most popular vocal microphone in the world. The Shure SM58 cardioid dynamic vocal features a 50Hz-15kHz frequency response tailored for vocals, with a brightened midrange and bass roll-off. It's designed for and extremely brilliant in live performance, sound reinforcement, and studio recording. A highly effective, built-in, spherical filter minimizes wind and breath "pop" noise. The unidirectional, cardioid pickup pattern adeptly isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. It also includes a clip and a bag. This is the best deal ever!!!

Legendary mediocrity

By Ben

from Pasadena , CA

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I bought one of these SM 58 microphones even though I donۡt think they sound near as good as an EV N/D767a, Audix OM5 or even a Shure Beta 58a. I bought the SM58 because Iۡm sick and tired of getting flack from sound guys at a gig when I tell them I want to use my own microphone. I donۡt like putting my mouth on a microphone that may have been used by someone that was sick with a cold or something. Anyway, I think all these sound guys are really used to the SM58 and have become too lazy to re-adust the settings on their sound board. It would just be sooooooooo much more work for them if they had tweak a knob. Poor guys. Because they are lazy, I had to buy a SM58. A microphone that sounds like a blanket is over it. The SM58 is way overrated. I donۡt care how legendary it is considered. It does not sound as good as other microphones. Take your best microphone and put a heavy beach towel over it, if you want it to sound like an SM58.

      By D. L. Rothchild

      from Riverside, CA

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

I've been playing clubs all across So. Cal for about 15 years: House of Blues, Troubadour, Whisky, Roxy, Showcase, Glasshouse, Orange Pavilion, Chain Reaction, Slide Bar, you name it. I've seen these mics BEAT TO HELL, looking like a chewed up hunk of metal, completely smashed, and still sounding like they were fresh out of the box. Great sound and strong enough to get run over by a delivery truck and keep on rockin'. Worth the Benjamin.

I have traveled the country with all kinds of bands... Blues, Rock, Metal, Country... All of them had this one thing in common... The Sure SM58. Look in any sound man's bag and you'll find the '58. Touring bands all over the world use them. I personally have had my '58 for over twenty years and I use it at EVERY GIG!
They are not the best mic's on the market, but if you want the best, you'll have to shell out the bucks.
If you want a good quality piece of gear that you don't have to treat like it's a glass statue, and will work for you for years to come, get a SM58. I wouldn't trade mine for anything!

        from Chula Vista, CA

Comments about Shure SM58 Dynamic Handheld Vocal Microphone:

This mic is the perfect choice for live vocal situations, especially for male vocalists. Take advantage of this mic's fantastic low end by positioning it on axis, about 1 inch away from the performer's mouth. Very robust...mine has been dropped several times and keeps on keepin on. Be prepared to purchase some replacement grills every now and then, as the majority of abuse occurs there - dents and dings from drops or even teeth. Great buy!!

does this mic prove legendary performance? it Shure does! (lol) this mic is one of the best you'll ever sing though. i bought this mic for my singer, and he loved how clear his voice sounded. better yet, we now dont have to turn our PA system up full blast to hear him sing. if you need a good mic, especially for vocals, get this one, it will not disappoint you. this mic may be a bit pricy, but its worth the money.
