Overview

The Shure SM58 mic is legendary for its uncanny ability to withstand abuse that would destroy any other microphone. The Shure SM58 has not only helped to define the sound of rock vocals on stage, it's also been used as a hammer to build stages and gone on to perform flawlessly later at the gig. Using a club's house system? You'll be singing through an SM58. And in the studio? Daniel Lanois always uses the SM58 or Beta 58 on Bono's vocals.

The Shure SM58 mic is world-renowned for its distinctive upper-midrange presence peak that ensures an intelligible, lively sound. Perfectly fits a performer's hand, balanced for total comfort during long gigs. Frequency response is a smooth, vocal-tailored 50Hz-15kHz, and the price is a bargain considering its life expectancy.

Features
  • Performance tested, industry standard
  • Uniform cardioid pick-up pattern for maximum gain before feedback and excellent rejection of off-axis sound
  • Tailored frequency response specifically shaped for vocals, with brightened midrange and bass roll off to control proximity effect
  • Advanced pneumatic shock mount system that minimizes transmission of mechanical noise and vibration
  • Steel-mesh grille and enamel-coated metal construction resist wear and abuse
  • Effective built in pop-filter reduces undesirable wind and breathe noise
  • Furnished with zippered storage bag and break-resistant stand adapter
  • Extremely durable under the heaviest use

This is a must have mic for any active musician. This mic is excellent for stage use, but it is also very useful in a studio or project studio. This mic has been my main stage mic for over 15 years. The SM58 is known to be great for live use but it is also great to use on vocal recordings. The SM58 is also a great mic to use on a snare drum (especially since it is durable). The SM58 is built tough enough to stand up against years of abuse. If you play live you need to have this mic.

This thing has been the standard for so long. Now there are a lot of mics in the same price range that naturally try to improve on that benchmark. And they are better. The president uses a 57. Does that make it the best vocal speech mic? No, although the 57 is good for just about everything else. The 58 was originally part of a sound system that wasn't tuned quite right, so they compensated by giving the mic an eq scoop. Some people say they like the eq of the 58, but often the house eq will have a happy face eq curve to make up for the increased mids. The problem is, that now, with so many mics that are better than the 58, one doesn't stand out as a new stadard. But watch the latest performances of bands today. unless they are using a house system, or they don't care much for details, you will see a lot less people using the 58. One that I like is the EV N/D267a. Good clean sound, strong signal, and better feedback control. So search around and see what else is out there before you buy the same boring standard equipment.

I used a discount coupon to get this mic as a birthday present for my bandleader. The SM-58 has been his choice throughout his career. His old one still works fine, but the new one is prettier...He was delighted to get it and I appreciated GC sending me a discount! Many great times ahead.

            Comments about Shure SM58 Mic:

I have traveled the country with all kinds of bands... Blues, Rock, Metal, Country... All of them had this one thing in common... The Sure SM58. Look in any sound man's bag and you'll find the '58. Touring bands all over the world use them. I personally have had my '58 for over twenty years and I use it at EVERY GIG!
They are not the best mic's on the market, but if you want the best, you'll have to shell out the bucks.
If you want a good quality piece of gear that you don't have to treat like it's a glass statue, and will work for you for years to come, get a SM58. I wouldn't trade mine for anything!

As advertised, more detail and treble than I am used to. Very good sound though and dialing in more bass on the amp balances it. I am pleased.

I picked up an SM58 a few months back at Guitar Center. After several years of doing acoustic gigs with "other" mics, I finally got on board. I was never completely satisfied with my other mics. I have never used "cheap" mics either. The SM58 simply sounds better to my ear. Strong and natural. The reason I avoided the 58 for so long was the fact that it was too popular. At my age, I couldn't care less about what is popular-I care about what sounds good.
