This is my second SM10 and I love it. I hate trying to perform, play guitar and straddle the mic and stand so I can see the music. With this headset you are really free to look at the audience, read your music, look at what your playing. Makes all the difference in the world. I sold my last SM10 to buy a wireless Samson Airline 77. It is a pain in the but to make sure you have fresh batteries each performance, fighting feedback and trying to set up the base on a higher area. This little mic plugs in and your set. I've never had feedback with it even while standing in front of my PA speakers. You do have to get it pretty close to your mouth as it does isolate the surrounding sound. We compared it to our Shure SM58's and there is a little difference but not enough to make me choose the SM58's instead of the SM10. The sound on it is crystal clear (I usually like a deeper vocal mic but the PA's mixer fixes that). This is advertised as a drummers mic. I can see why. I love this mic and will not bother with the wireless mics in the future.
Shure's expert says this is the same dynamic element as in their WH20 series but in a more rugged headset. The SM12A also has the same element but adds an earpiece. Text says freq response is 50Hz-15kHz, but plot in the user manual shows more like 200Hz-10kHz. Probably compares favorably to other mics in its class as all manufacturers seem to lie about the same. Requires phantom power.
I love the freedom this gives me while I am drumming. To bad it doesn't help my singing abilities. The SM10A is a great value.
