Overview

The Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic is a new take on an old classic. The Beta 87 was consistently a top choice of performers and audio technicians due to its accuracy, detail, and rich vocal production. Now this longstanding favorite has been redesigned as the Shure Beta 87A. It has a thicker handle that gives a more comfortable feel when hand-held. It also includes a new break-resistant swivel adapter and low-frequency roll-off to compensate for proximity effect and to prevent boominess. The supercardioid pattern provides high gain-before-feedback, and its 3-stage pop filter minimizes breath pop and noise. Frequency response: 50Hz-18kHz.
Requires phantom power.

Features
  • Supercardioid electret condenser mic
  • Redesigned with a thicker shank for hand-held comfort
  • Break-resistant swivel adapter
  • Low-frequency roll-off

Great accuracy, clarity, and presence. Very open and natural. This mic is great. I just purchased the Neumann KM40, expecting it to be a mic that would knock me off my feet. I was impressed by the KM40, but not to the point where I would actually say that it blows away the Shure mics. In comparison with the KM40, The Beta 87 is not far off at all, as far as sound is concerned, and the KM40 is more than twice as much. The only thing I would suggest is that folks be careful with the verb you choose to use with this mic. I find that the TC electronic verbs make this mic sound way too bright and harsh. Lexicon made it sound much warmer. Hope this helped.

I was somewhat disappointed in this mic compared to the Audix OM6. The SM87a seems to be the mic for female vocalist these days, but I found it somewhat veiled sounding in side by side comparison under real live use. Of course I'll continue to use what ever the Vocalist prefers especially if they bring their own. But if the choice is mine to make I'll go with the OM6 for now.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

Great choice if you can't afford the Neumann KMS105. I have found the only other mic that satisfies my need for pro sound is the Audio Technica AE6100.... A bit cheaper and doesn't require phantom power. But if you're looking for crystal clear sound and unmatched sensitivity, the Beta 87a is yours for the taking.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

Wow, this microphone really distinguishes itself. I have been singing with a Shure SM58 for years and now will never go back. I even bought my own phantom power supply so I can use it in venues that have older sound boards with no 48V supply. Now the SM58 is a great mic, but the 87A is an amazing mic. One of my favorite things about the 87A is the clarity. I'm in a acoustic rock band and people say (and from listening to our live recordings) that you can really hear the words a lot better than with the 87A. When I have a good monitor I can hear this clarity myself and it is beautiful. You can hear for yourself on our facebook page with the song "I Been Thinking About You" (granted it is a compressed file), just use /boxcartheband to check it out. If you are a singer who cares about how you sound do yourself a favor and get this mic, it make you sound better with more clarity to the audience, there is no excuse (besides extreme poverty, but come on this is an investment!) not to be using this mic if you are a singer.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

Just picked this up today, after reading many positive reviews. This is by far the best vocal mic I have ever used. Singing into this cuts through the mix beautifully, and the clarity and power of the mic really improves my vocals. No worries about placement, etc., just sing into it and you will sound better than ever before, I guarantee it. Wish I could afford two of them! I was able to push this so it cut through the mix with zero feedback! It rejected the ambient sounds around it, and this is just in my home studio, where the speaker system is close by. I expect this to perform wonderfully on stage at my next gig.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

Great vocal mic for precision and articulation. My wife sings Armenian/Persian and I do traditional smooth James Taylor and French music. It picks-up all of nuances on both voices and they aren't even KSMs! KMS would be the only next logical jump. Yes, vocal quality leads, but this one made her say,why didn't you tell me about this one? It's great on funk vocals too, because you can isolate the voice while the music is moving and then launch into Cat Stevens and other delicate stuff.

Comments about Shure Beta 87A Supercardioid Condenser Mic:

I've been performing my own gigs for about 5 years now, and I also have been leading worship for my church for around 6 years. I had always sworn by the SM58's (extreemly durable, great sound) and thought that I would never switch from using them. however, no matter how well they performed it always seemed like something was missing from my vocals. This all changed when I bought my first beta 87a. Ever detali and inflection in my voice could be heard. Many people who had regularly heard me sing commented on how much better the sound quality was when I first used it! I have never had such detailed and clear sounding vocals in a live setting. I even started using this mic to record in my studio. It is top quality for a very reasonable price! If you have never used a condensor to perform live I highly reccomend it and reccomend this product! You won't regret buying this and may even want to buy more as a back up! I'll keep my SM58's but they will only gather dust as I continue to use this fine piece of equipment

If you volunteer to do the sound at your church, do yourself a favor and get this thing. Make sure the phatom power is on and I didn't have to do any equalizing with this mic and it sounded great! If anyone knows of a wireless system that has the same quality in sound please post!
