A Magnificent Microphone That's Part of Audio History!

By Frank

Comments about Shure 75th Anniversary Limited Edition Iconic Unidyne 55 Vocal Microphone:

This microphone is a stunning re-manufacture of the original Shure Unidyne 55 with its vintage 1939 Art Deco ?birdcage? grille and aerodynamic retro desk stand. It is magnificent! Only 5,575 (the model 55, 75th anniversary) of these microphones have been built and they are timeless works of art, much more so than the modern slimmed down 55 models in the current Shure product line. Though this microphone represents a historic breakthrough in acoustic design, it?s the exquisite exterior that first grabs you. The microphone?s outer case was inspired by the grille of a 1937 Oldsmobile ? an Art Deco choice that proves artistic ?theft? is often a very good thing when its better than the original. The story behind this microphone is amazing as well. Be sure to download the history from the Shure website. This mic will sell out quickly and be a valuable collectable. It got #216 from the Guitar Center and find it an amazing recreation of a great historical product.

Comments about Shure 75th Anniversary Limited Edition Iconic Unidyne 55 Vocal Microphone:

The most impressive feature I noticed is its ability to block out unwanted noise from the rear of the mic. This is truly a unidirectional microphone. I bought it to perform with. I'm not a collector and don't have money lying around just to put a pretty item on the shelf. I have only tried this mic at home on my PA, but that is a different room than a larger club setting. Even in my small living room with the FOH speakers facing me, hence the back of the microphone, I am able to turn up the speakers very surprisingly loud before feedback. Singing straight on into this microphone at a 90 degree angle does accentuate plosives rather badly. Much more so than the Super 55 (that's a different review). This mic does have that "broadcaster" kind of sound for sure. It really accentuates the lows and low mids quite a bit. I honestly didn't like it plugged straight into my mixer. However, run it through a preamp, pull up some gain, apply low cut filter, and add some treble or presence at the mixer and wow ! Even then, the gain before feedback remains very high. Yes, it has an old school crooner sound. I can back away and sing loudly and move in close and kiss it and whisper a sultry note or so and the proximity effect does not appear to be as drastic (to me) as a standard SM57/58. And yet the dynamic range remains tight. This mic, I think is perfect for broadcasting right out of the box. But, with some preamp and processing it is a very nice and warm sounding mic. I'm not a good singer. It is a "tattle tail". But, that's OK ! This mic will definitely teach me better singing skills. It will not make a mediocre singer sound great. It will make a mediocre singer sound louder ! I will be using this mic for live stage use. Oh, I forgot to mention; my harmonica "clean" sound is stunning through this mic ! Crank up the gain, lower the output and its Chicago sound, big time. Keep your preamp by your side so you can play with gain and volume levels as desired per song or character.

Comments about Shure 75th Anniversary Limited Edition Iconic Unidyne 55 Vocal Microphone:

I bought this microphone from the NYC Times Square GC location. This mic looks and sound amazing! You don't have to be super close to the mic for it to pick up your sound. The mic is a little bigger than I had imagined. There are some cool documents that come along with it since it is a limited edition piece. I am excited to use it with my a cappella group Rocktavo.
