Out of the box it took only minuntes to figure out how to set up the unit and get it working. The auto frequency features takes about a minute to get the best frequency and link the transmitter. This is great when you have only a few minutes between sets to get up and running. I can't tell the difference in sound between a cable and the SLX, but some people may disagree. Personally, it's worth it to not have to worry about stepping on the cord all the time.
