Channel Strips of the Stars: Ronan Chris Murphy
World-class producer/engineer/mixer Ronan Chris Murphy's credits include King Crimson, Steve Morse, Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti, Gregg Bissonette, Tony Levin, and projects with members of Tool, Ministry, Weezer, Dishwalla, and Yes. A huge fan of A Designs Audio, Ronan was kind enough to share some of his drum-recording signal chains:
"Well all of the drums for Terry Bozzio's Jazz trio were recorded with all A Designs Audio solid state preamps. For drum overheads I used Shure KSM32 condenser mics (#270141) into a Pacifica (#189903); for kick drums, I prefer the Shure Beta 52. Actually I have used the Shure KSM32 into Pacifica combo on tons of great drummers, including Terry Bozzio, Victor Bisetti (Los Lobos), Gregg Bissonette (Santana, David Lee Roth), and Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Mister Mister, The Rembrandts)."

I was recommended the 52 when I was first getting into DAW recording. I needed to record drums and a recording engineer recommended this mic to me. He said for the money, you just don't get a more quality bass drum mic than this. I couldn't agree more. I've used this for both live shows and for recording CD's and it's never let me down. I've tried other bass drum mics and their sound is never quite on par with the Beta. Definitely a must have for your mic cabinet.
What more can I say? This is the "Industry Standard" of kick drum mics. I've seen this mic being used on the kick drums in national act concerts more times than I can count. This mic kicks butt. I originally bought the Audix Kick drum mic that is supposed to be so great, but I returned it and bought this one. I got exactly what I was looking for. This mic has great lows, punch, and click(slap). I love it and I'm glad I own one.
I assume Beta 52A kick drum mic is the best drum mic you can get in this price range. Definitely, your whole band will sound fuller with more dynamic kicking sound. It is a must for every band!
