      Shaker Mad Dog Microphone (620540)
Availability:

An ergonomic, dynamic harp mic with a rich voice, clear treble tones, and lots of bottom end.

Shaker's Mad Dog harmonica microphone adds a totally new dimension for harp players to explore. Imagine a mic with a full, rich voice; a lot of bottom end; and a mid-range with complex overtones and smooth, clear treble—that's the Mad Dog. Now imagine a microphone so ergonomically perfect that you don't have to hold it at all, it just stays where you put it, totally freeing both hands for gestures and giving you the ability to wail without worry. It features a radical shape, a large-diameter dynamic element housed in an injection molded sono resin case, and it's distinctly voiced to emphasize lower mid frequencies, creamy tonality, and a great response. You'll develop new techniques never before available to harp players. The Mad Dog harmonica mic has a more aggressive, almost industrial look and the design is a balance of form and function. It's a serious tool for serious harp players.

Shaker Harmonica Microphones are part of a sophisticated music making system, one that includes the harmonica, the player's hands, the microphone, the amp, and the player's personal techniques. Traditional methods of measuring response and behavior become pretty much irrelevant because Shaker's don't fit strictly into the established categories of polar patterns. By using a sampling of the harmonica's sound and directing it through acoustic ports into a volume-tuned chamber, Shaker mics become, in essence, miniature hand-held recording studios. This is known as Shaker GNS technology, or good noise sampling, resulting in great tone, extreme technique sensitivity, and tremendous feedback. Designed and engineered by Shakey Joe, these mics are totally handmade in the US and use as many American-made parts as possible, making Shaker microphones the real deal. Made in the Arizona desert by harp players, for harp players.

  • Good Mic

As reviewed by D.A. Souza on 4/1/2010

This mic is the right size and very light weight. The volume control is smoothe and feedback is minimal. It projects every nuance of your playing style and is made by an outfit that really cares about it's products.

  • Another great one from Shaker

As reviewed by John Lasell on 5/9/2011

Shaker has a good story, harmonica mics by harmonica players, but more important than that is they make a great product. It is a well designed ergonomic microphone, the design balances itself in your hand, actually through your fingers, with volume control out where you can reach it even while playing. When I first started playing with mics, I was used to vocal mics, set the volume and control volume by stepping forward or back, but with a harp mic cupped in your hands the volume control and access to it is more important. The Mad Dog with the control on the outside is the most convenient I've come across. I own two, Shaker mics, the Mad Dog and the Mad Cat. I love them both. The differences are size and tone. For a quieter band I prefer the small size of the Mad Cat, it almost disappears in your hand. For full out rock the Mad Dog's larger pickup seems to work a little better but at that volume who can tell. The amp becomes the more important factor. However the Mad Dog's tone does seem a little richer, more bass end or something. The difference is hard to distinguish. It's probably more a function of the size of your hand, they are both good for clean harp players. For a dirty sound I use the old standby bullet mics now made in China. But when I want a quality output I go straight for the Shakers. Love em.
