Under-saddle instalation made easy

By ITLAG

Comments about Shadow SH NFX-AC Quick Mount Nanoflex Pickup with Preamp for Acoustic and Classical Guitars:

This pick-up was my first experiment with under-saddle traducers. Before that, I had always used mics. I fitted it to a classical guitar and with a bit of EQ it sounded good. At this point, I had only heard it in home studio conditions but when I used it in a live situation, its limitations became aparent. My guitar sounded a bit cold, thin and lacked character and had an unpleasant hard attack. However, this was infinitely preferable to using a mic and not being heard (feedback always lying in wait). I then tried it on a steel string acoustic - similar story. I've since applied some serious eq in the form of a 31 band graphic to get rid of the most offensive spot frequencies. This improved things a lot live but the over-hard attack and lack of warmth still remained. On the plus side, this pick-up is really easy to fit. I do have an issue with the mini-jack connection which cracks and crackles at times. This is a great product for those who require a quick and easy way to get some volume and it will give you a reasonable approximation to an acoustic sound compared to a magnetic pick-up. What it won't give you an absolutely faithful representation of your acoustic instrument.
