The Woody XL is a significant improvement over my very old sound hole pickup. It has been dependable but needed major parametric EQ to rein in its exaggerated midrange, and to boost the amount of "air" in the high frequency range. The Woody intrinsically sounds much more natural, requiring much less EQ. I have two minor criticisms: 1) The mounting system works by pressure fit in the sound hole against stiff foam rubber. It's not as secure as the Lawrence system that held the pickup in place with spring steel. 2) The output cable is thick enough that it gets in my way, a bit. I've taped it to the pick guard on my Gibson flat top, and that mostly solves the problem. (Of course, the cable's thick because it's a good quality cable!) Overall, I'm quite happy with the unit. The adjustable pole pieces are a big plus. (I've already used the included Allen wrench to tame the output on my "B" string, a bit.) The unit is well constructed, and even includes an alternate pole piece for players using a solid "G" string. Very thoughtful of Seymour Duncan!

I don't know if it's the combination of my guitar, preamp and pickup but it sounds awful. No bass, no highs, no nothing just awful sound.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

Wanted an alternative to "micing" my D28; this pickup provides a good reproduction of the sound of the guitar.Adjustment of individual string volume was the primary reason that I purchased and I was not disappointed. The 16 foot cord is a good length for any gig that allows me to sit while playing, or if I'm not moving around too much. Quality of the build is good and I expect this pickup to be with me a long time.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

I needed a pickup to rotate between three vintage acoustics. I didn't want to do any modifications or permanent installation to these guitars. After some research the Woody XL seemed the logical choice. I was right.

Installation was easy, though the virgin neoprene is a little stubborn at first. But it was immediately apparent that the pole pieces at the same height put the sound out of balance. 5 minutes of tweaking pole heights and I got this pickup sounding really good and well balanced.

Of the Woody pickup series the XL is the one to buy. It is both noiseless and adjustable. The HC is similar, noiseless, but doesn't have the adjustable pole pieces. The SC is single coil and wasn't even a consideration for me.

Though it doesn't have a volume or tone control I wouldn't call that a negative, just missing features. I do find the 14' non detachable cable a bit of a nuisance. If you unplug from your amp or box you have to drag 12' of excess cable along with you. At some point in the future I plan on bobbing the cable to reach just beyond the end pin of my guitars and put a female connector on it to accept standard guitar cables. I think this is the one area that Seymour Duncan might improve the design.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

I bought this for a gig on acoustic.
The pick-up is for a standard sound hole. I have various pro guitars: Gibson J-200, Martin OM-45 etc. it's great to be able to switch guitars with the pickup. The pickup is braced by dense foam along the sides which is about two and half times thicker than the soundboard. This allows you some adjustment on distance from the strings.
I can definitely recommend this pickup to anyone needing to amp a standard acoustic that doesn't have built-in pickups. The product is nicely packaged in a reusable cloth bag with instruction book and a long cable.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

I was using a Shure Beta 57A mic previously for my D28 Martin with a Fishman Mini Loudbox acoustic amp. It sounds really good. But when the bass player stands next to me, his amp causes a lot of feedback through my mic and amp. So I decided to try the Woody XL Adjustable Soundhole Pickup. It works good but it doesn't have the sound that I get through the mic setup. But at least I don't have any feedback. Overall it's a good setup and the Fishman Mini Loudbox amp is loud enough that I don't have any problem being heard over the other electric instruments in our group. I would defintely reccommend the Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

After reading other reviews about very hot B strings with sound whole pickups I'm glad I went with the adjustable pole Woody. I took that B down a notch or two and it is sounding quite adequate.

decent sound but a little in the way

              By John Murray

              from Rockland, NY

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody XL Adjustable Pole Pieces Soundhole Pickup:

I was looking at different sound hole options for my Martin and decide to try the XL based on some reviews I saw on line. What I like: The sound is pretty decent especially after adjusting each pole. What I don't like: It's not easy to install. It's a very tight fit and the edges are a little sharp. Sharp enough that I can see my sweet Martin getting damaged while installing or removing the device. I have tried other brands that were easier to install yet sounded worse. The wire hanging below the hole is not a problem for me but the height of the pick-up (being very close to the strings) is a bit of a problem and impedes my playing style. I can see this working pretty well for a pick-strummer but it's in the way for a finger picker. So, if you're a pick strummer, this is the pick=up for you but if you finger pick... the tips of your fingers will be tapping this pickup constantly. The noise level is pretty low but I found that there is a bit of a low level hum. I tried it using three amps and three power sources and the low level hum is pretty consistent.
