I had been consdiring retiring my old Martin acoustic which plays well, but has no amplification. Instead I decided to try the SD Woody pickups for the sound hole of the acoustic. The result was fantastic. The sound is great. Very little buzz or feedback. And the tone is good. The fit into my standard size sound hole on the guitar is snug. The only draw backs are, there is not tone adjustment on the guitar as there is no pre-amp. Not a problem if you can adjust tone on your amp. The other draw back is the extra cord coming out of the sound hole from the pickup. It can get in your way when picking. It was a matter of finally feeding the cord back through the strap connection on the base of the guitar that worked for me.

Woody pickups are not good, they are a cheap way to plug in your acoustic and nothing more. They work in that they do amplify your guitar, but the sound is unacceptable for performance or recording. It amplifies loudly, but with no regard to tone or balance. The main problem with Woodies is the high end, it's shrill and it dominates the low. My band and I played an open mic at a bar with a great sound system. One of the other performers, who was good, had a Woody in his guitar and it ruined his set. It sounded awful, and being a Woody owner myself, I know for a fact that it was the pickup, I know that sound anywhere: it's the sound of an inferior pickup. If you want something to bang around on, go for it, but if you want something that sounds good, especially for performance or recording, don't bother, you WILL be disappointed.

I was thinking of purchasing the Seymour Duncan Performer model from the sale flyer.I decided to check out the reviews on it and after reading them went with this one instead.I'm glad I did.I am very pleased with this one.It has great sound,no hum and is a breeze to install.I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quality solution and low cost way to enjoy the electrified acoustic sound. Thanks to Guitar Center for offering yet another good deal. Great Pickup; Great Price

By Ralph

from Lubbock, Tx

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

This pick up is great - if all you want is to put your acoustic sound through a speaker. It installs easily, even on an old Sigma Guitar I have with a small soundhole, and can be easily removed or moved from guitar to guitar. It sounds, pretty much, like a miked guitar. The only problem is the the output is not very loud -- which could be cured by cranking the amp. I just run it through a Digitech RP90 modeling processor, set with no effects, a balanced EQ, and only the pedal set to adjust the volume. Works great.

By Milt R.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

The quality is excellent, I particularly like the resonance from the wood pickup giving a true reproduction sound of my guitar. I bought this for my daughter and am planning to purchase one for myself too!

Great Investment

By mike

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I received this pickup about a week ago and i can not stop using it. It has such a rich and balanced sound. Throw a little reverb at it and it will make your guitar sound much better than it is. Well worth the money.

Very Low Output

By Todd m Smith

from Cleveland Ohio

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

Sound not bad but the output is so low that I had to turn my amp up to ten to get any volume at all. I returned the pickup. You have to have a preamp for this pickup and this should have been in the product description.

Very Real Deal

By Ed Le Doux

from North Providence, RI

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I have seven electrics and two acoustics. I wanted to try to electrify my acoustics but was concerned about the cost and mostly the quality of the sound. I ordered the "Woody", plugged it in and was amazed at the natural sound, balance and overal quality of the sound. I love it. If you want the same things, buy one. I love it and I bet you will too.

Building Noise Problem Solver

By Robert Reilly

from Chicago IL

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I am using this Hum Canceling Pickup now in my Guild D50 Dreadnought after first trying the single coil version. I should have bought the hum canceler in the first place. With the single coil we were getting noise interference from something in the building I play in, probably the fire detection system or fluorescent lighting. The hum canceler solved the problem. The Dreadnought body guitars were designed to play with unamplified big bands and solo in large concert halls, but have a hard time with today's amplified bands. The pickup brings me out where the pure sound of the Guild can be heard even when the keyboard player is going nuts. The Guild has a 3-3/4" sound hole, and the pickup would not quite fit, so I had to file about 1/32" off the back part of the wood on the cable end to get it in. I also cut away a little bit on the foam. I think it should not be too tight in there or it may affect the vibration of the body top. I don't leave it in all the time, I take it out when I put the guitar in the case.

Excellent Value

By kevin rygg

from Great Falls, MT

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

This item is a great buy! I use this with a 12-string Fender through an old tube-Crate with Celestion speakers; I fingerpick in alternate tunings and love the tone. On the downside, the cable is often in the way, and it would be nice to have more controls (i.e. volume) up top. Also, I would like to hear this one vs. the Martin Thinline 332. If I were in a different ?tax-bracket?, I would have made a different choice. However, for the hobbyist, this is a great little item. Great gift item - if you are looking for something.

Nice product for the price.

By Rob Ercoli

from Torringotn CT

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I bought the SD Woody HC for 2 reasons. I had the SC and liked it but it made a lot of noise. And I have a Fishman Neo-D 02 (HC) and love the sound but it's a lot of work to install. I installed the Woody on my Seagull and the sound is just as good as the Fishman albeit not quite as loud. There is still a slight hum at higher volume but nowhere as much as the Sc. My main concern is the scratches the Woody left around the soundhole. I'm not too fussy about it because the Seagull has a thin finish and scratches easily anyway. So I permanently installed the Fishman on my Seagull and will be using the Woody on my Yamaha for playing out. So, if you're really fussy about scratching your instrument, then try something else. But if you want to use this on an older and/or beater guitar, it's well worth them money. The bonuses are the thicker cable that you don't find on a lot of other similar items and the canvas bag to tote it along.

    Best Uses

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I love the feel and sound of my acoustic but it doesn't have a pick-up so I tried the Woody on a recommendation from a friend and couldn't be more surprised and impressed with how easy it is to use and the great and realistic sound it produces at such a low price. It is really a no brainer if you want to amplify one of your acoustics.

Love it, but not the best

      By Trevor Smith

      from Manassas, Va

Comments about Seymour Duncan Woody HC Hum-Canceling Soundhole Pickup:

I've had this thing for a couple of months and I loved it. Only problem was last night i went to a soundcheck and it wouldn't work. I don't know if it was me or the mixer but I didn' get any sound through it. I took it home and it worked just fine through my amp. Love it, but I would buy a guitar with a pickup built in.
