i got one of these in the bridge postion of my squire strat to give it more of a beefy, chunky rock sound. its sounds awesome but can sometimes go a little weak on the ultra high notes, but that doesnt matter seings as very few people play that crap anyway *cough* shred. all in all, if you want a good chunky rock tone without carving a hole in your strat, this is the pickup for you.

I used the SHR-1 (neck version) in the neck position of my Fender Strat (alder body, rosewood fingerboard, 500k pots). First let's talk about the clean sound. It's very dark and muddy. Lacks versatility. Don't expect any sparkle out of it. I can't say the tone is poor - it's just limited. Paradoxically, SHR-1's character ecouraged me to use my guitar's clean sound in an interesting, unconventional way. Great discovery, but surely accessible with other pickups as well. So no nice & beautiful clean chords or single notes. Let's go to the distorted sound. That's what the pickup was made for. Very usable for hard rock/metal rhythms and solos. But again, dark and muddy. That's OK with heavy music but if it could get a bit brighter I would be happier. Remember, I used it with 500k pots and it was still dark. If you use it with 250k pots (standard single coil pickups guitar's pots) the sound is even darker. This pickup will please you only if you play mostly heavy music and don't need bright clean sound. Or if you look for something untypical, but this will bore you very soon. Coil splitting doesn't work good in this pickup - it was too quiet. All in all, if you need versatility the SHR-1 is not for you. If you play metal I think you'll like it. I replaced SHR-1n with SSL-7 Quarter Pound, very good choice in my opinion (powerful single coil pickup).

Upgraded the factory pickups on my MIM Strat. Replaced pick guard. Easy swap. This was my first time swapping pickups. Everything went well. This Pickup has some punch. Really clean sound. Sustain is amazing.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

I love the way Stratocasters feel and play but I'm not a fan of their jangley sound. I have owned about 5 Fender Strats over the course of few years trying to "find my tone" and I sold each and every Strat do to the way the pickups sounded.....don't get me wrong I love single coil guitars and I own several Danelectros which have phenomenal single coils that my Strats just couldn't do. I am a Stratocaster player because they just call my name and I feel they are hands down the best all around guitar out there.
I ended up finding "the one" out of all the Strats that I've owned and I simply could not sell this one so I started to do some research and I came across the SD Hot Rails.......wow what a difference this baby made for my tone! All the benefits and versatility in a Strat with a big LP humbucker sound! I need to make one thing clear..... this pick up sounds better than a stock Les Paul which I find to be way too dark, the Hot Rails will give you the treble that you need to retain your Strat sound. I installed my HR in the bridge position in about 15 minutes........Just buy it you will love it.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

I replaced the Fender Fat 50 bridge pickup because I needed something with a bit more balls. I made the right choice since it gave me exactly what I was looking for. I kept the 250 k pot so that it wasn't so bright and I removed one of the tone controls and ordered a new pick guard and my strat plays like a whole new beast. It is quite as a church mouse and responsive like you can't imagine. I still get the traditional Strat sound with the middle and neck pick ups and even get a richer sound with the Seymour Duncan Hotrail on clean channels but when I kick on my dirty or crunch channels wow what a total difference.

Just what the doctor ordered to improve my Steinberger

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

Hot Rails single-coil sized humbucker pickups are just what the doctor ordered for my Hohner G3T headless guitar equipped with Steinberger tremolo. This is the guitar that I take to work every day. It has every feature I need, but the stock EMG Select pickups are insipid and dull. The signal is so uneven that I couldn't even trigger my B9 organ pedal from the high E and B strings because the G, D & A strings are three times as loud as the first two strings. Don't even THINK about playing a lead guitar solo on a guitar where the first two strings are barely audible! I ripped out all three EMG pickups, and put in their place three Seymour Duncan pickups. The pickups were easy drop-in replacements. Even the spring-loaded screws lined up perfectly with the existing holes. I chose Hot Neck for the Neck position; Hot Bridge for the middle position; and a Pearly Gates TremBucker in the bridge position. Here's why. I want the neck pickup to sound like a Gibson or a Gretch Country Gentleman so that I can play jazz and country music. I want the middle pickup to sound solid body for all-around rock use, without the thin, twangy sound of a Strat. I'll use the bridge pickup to play the blues and get in yer face like Billy Gibbons. Note that all three have much more mid-range than most other pickups. The typical Strat pickup boosts highs and lows and cuts out most of the mid-range. Their peculiar EQ curve results in a more flat, full-range response when played through a Fender amp, because most Fender amps are very mid-rangy. Folks who like that sound call it "presence," but I call it "playing through the telephone" because over the phone you will only hear frequencies from 900 Hertz to 3,800 Hertz. Ok, so the usual Strat pickup compensates for the frequency response of the usual Fender amp, resulting in a high-fidelity sound. But I play through a high-fi amp so I need the pickups to supply mid-range. Moral: carefully check your EQ curves before choosing a pickup.

Swapped into a G&L Legacy tribute bridge position, and I'm very happy with the result. Shreds on high gain, has a good crunch on medium gain, and sounds ok on cleaner settings.

I have a Jimmy Vaughan signature Strat that had Fender Tex Mex pickups that were weak and twangy. I wanted something with more punch and a better tone. I tried the bridge pickup first and wow! What a difference. I played it that way for a while and decided to replace the neck and middle and WOW & WOW! I went back and played it 3 or 4 more times right after I installed them because I couldn't believe the difference. They really sound great though the sound system also. If you're looking for a great pickup to replace what you have, I guarantee, you will not be disappointed.

Comments about Seymour Duncan SHR-1 Hot Rails Single-Coil Sized Humbucker Pickup:

I bought this for my Fender MIM Stratocaster. I wanted a Humbucker in the bridge position and I wanted to keep the Fender single coils in the middle and neck position. At first, I was confused by the wiring as to whether or not to switch certain wires since forums seemed to contradict themselves. I did the switch and it worked out great. For anyone looking for the simple installation instructions for a situation like mine:

Solder and tape the Duncan Red and White wires together.
Solder Black and Gold (bare) wire to the ground
Solder Green wire to the pickup selector switch.

Note that other guitars and setups will wire like the diagram. This worked out very well for me to create a versatile guitar that with both humbucker and single coil without having to purchase another guitar.

So I do a lot of pickup testing instead of reading about them...I find this is the only real way to see if you like something and if it will fit into your setup. I play both les Paul's and Strats but only use marshall and Orange amp heads for recording. Every now and then I have a need for a Strat tone when recording. I have purchased every set of high end boutique single coil Strat pickups you can think of and I keep taking them back out and putting in the Duncan rails! I just can't take the single coil buzz when recording. I have an American Vintage 70s swamp ash Strat that has the hot rail in the bridge, the vintage rail in the middle and the cool rail in the neck and this has become my go to Strat when recording. I also keep another American Deluxe Strat handy, loaded with straight vintage rails in all three positions. It's simple....if you want great Strat tone that a bit more aggressive and without the buzz then buy the hot rail for the bridge and the cool rail for the neck. If you want a more natural Strat tone that's a bit more vintage and authentic sounding then get the vintage rails and put them in whatever positions you want the more vintage sounding tone. Regardless, you absolutely can not go wrong with the Duncan rails. Like I said, at first there was no way I was going to put rail pickups in a 2000.00 stratocaster. I thought that might be a joke....boy was I wrong!
