I own an Epiphone Les Paul Standard and i quickly realised that the sound coming off of the pickups tended to get muddled when playing chords. Since I'm on a budget ,when I noticed these, I had to get them. Don't be fooled by the low price when compared to Gibson pickups. This set rocks! When I first played my guitar after having the pickups changed I immediately noticed a difference. Chords sound much cleaner, even with distorion, and solos sound wicked! Don't expect a miracle though these can't totally trasform a guitar but for my epi they worked great.

I thought these would be versatile enough to be able to switch between clean and heavy distortion...not the case. They are better than the stock musicman pickups in my sub1 but get muddy when playing leads with distortion. I have had the pearly gates p/u before and they are twice the pickup. The stock duncan designed pickups on my Schecter C1+ where better than these!

Stunning

By jotrimble

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

This is definately the best combination if your guitar has a mahogany body and a rosewood fingerboard. You can get any kind of tones you would ever want and yes, even more. The tone is fat, warm, provides warm harmonics and versatillity, open and most expressive, ready to suit anyone's needs. Just try it. You will never regret it. ;)

I wanted to rebuild my tired old Epiphone Les Paul Special. So not knowing for sure what to buy, the Guitar Center salesperson said this was the set to have. He was right! They turned That Les Paul into Frankenstien!!!!!

Huge Range

By DDub

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

These pickups are awesome. I put them in my PRS Tremonti SE, and it makes such a huge difference - way more sustain and output! The range of these pickups is huge...go anywhere from mellow to shredding. I had my tech install push/pull pots for me so I can split the coils to get that single coil "twang" when I want it. This upgrade is definitely worth the money.

The Best Replacement Pickups

By John W. Anderson

from Greenville, MS

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I ordered this set for my Gibson Les Paul Custom and I'm blown away by the sound. The Gibson 490 & 498 pickups sound great, mind you, but the mids and low mids are a bit too hot for my taste. I put the Seymour Duncan set in & it's like a whole new guitar. These pickups have excellent tonal balance and sound great through my old British Marshalls. I highly recommend this particular set of pickups regardless of what your style is.

Deadly and Versatile

By Greg T.

from New York

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I put these pups very late last night in my Les Paul. These neck has a very dense clean tone and the bridge has a nice "country" sound when its clean but when its distorted.... get ready for that duncan ride!! Its REALLY CRUNCHY and not close to muddy at all!! VERY VERY PUNCHY!!! These pickups are pretty much the perfect for all around playing - from jazz to blues and all the way to heavy metal.. they do it all. All you need is a nice setup of amp and effects and you're good to go. Both of these pickups are worth every penny.

wake up that cheap guitar

By Tom

from Toledo, Ohio

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I have owned several guitars. I just sold my les paul as I needed the money and took some of that money and replaced the pickups in my Ibanez. My Ibanez is a middle of the road guitar, but with these pickups it sounds like a top of the line guitar. It sounds every bit as good as my les paul and in some regards even better. The neck pickup is excellent clean but make no mistake it sounds good with some distortion as well. The bridge pickup is great with distortion, these pickups go together great.

the best tone for the money

By andy

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

i just received the pickups yesterday, i spent about an hour installing them. i strung my epi. g400 and plugged it in. the neck pickup is by far superior to the bridge. the sound out of the neck p u is smooth and heavy. perfect for blues. the bridge pick up has some great crunch. i am going to eventually split the bridge coils for a strat sound, but for right now it works. these pickups are the greatest sounding pickups i have heard. highly recommend to anyone. very versatile. great product.

Far better than expected....

By Greg Gemmill

from Coldwater, MI.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

Even though I was urged to buy these by a long time player with yearsof experience, I was pleasantly surprized by the tone that these PUs exhibit. I'm not a shredder so a lot of the new edgy pickups really don't appeal to me. The bold bluesy tones from the jazz neck pickup are soooo smooth, and the Jeff Beck bridge unit produces the sounds jeff has been known for without being overly rough at loud volumes. I would recommend these to anyone.

Nice Clear Tones!

By pliddy

from Northeastern, NJ

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I replaced the stock Burstbucker pro pickups in my Gibson Les Paul Standard with the hot rodded set for more clarity in my sound. The stock Burstbuckers are very good pickups but focus more on the lower mid frequencies which made it hard to cut through the live band mix well at all, particularly when playing with a live mix of drums, bass, piano, ac. guitar, violin and 3-4 vocalists. After installing the Jazz and JB set and then recording audio clips of both pickups, it's obvious that the JB in the bridge does as Seymour Duncan designed them to do; focus on the high mids and treble frequencies yielding a much clearer, crunchy tone with distortion. The Burstbuckers audio clips actually sounded more nasally and somewhat muted. But the JB sounds nice and clear whether playing rhythm or lead parts. Surprisingly, the Jazz neck pickup is my favorite because in clean mode they sound full but not at all muddy; great for strumming rhythm parts or jazz riffs. But then put it into overdrive and it really sings with blues and rock leads; so full yet very clear when playing solos above the 12th fret. The focus on higher treble frequencies is great! It's got a very smooth tone. No wonder it's Seymour's personal favorite pickup. I'll be trying the Les Paul and new pickups at band rehearsal tonight and will see how they do in a live setting. But I'm expecting great things. All in all, the Jazz and JB set are a great combo of tones. Depending on your amp you may or may not get metal type distortion, but I can definitely get hard rock tones with these pickups and my Egnater Renegade tube amp. Want some classic humbucker tone with clarity? Get this set now!

Bad to the bone

By Mike

from Austin, Tx.

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I just put these baby's on my axe and wow what a great choice they were. Clean and clear on both the clean and drive channel, lot's of searing sustain compared to the old one's. I play a Jackson Kelly. Some of the reveiws said not to expect a metal tone but I have no problem using a boss MT2 Metal zone pedal. Maybe that's all you need for it. Great job Seymour they are my favorite now too. Get some and enjoy the great tone on your favorite axe.

Very nice...

By Spencer

from Ann Arbor, MI

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I've had these pickups for about 6 months now. They are quite the improvement from my Epiphone G400s stock pickups. The SH4 pickup is great for distorted tones. Sounds great anywhere from bluesy overdrive to that thrash metal tone of the 80's. Clean, it isn't quite my cup of tea, but it sounds good. It would be great clean for any type of country and maybe some jazz. It has a very midrangy sound which really is noticable when its clean, I think. But that midrange, when it's distorted, really helps give it that extra punch. The SH2 Jazz is quite the pickup as well. As the name might suggest, it shines with cleans. The cleans are amazing with this pickup and would sound great with jazz or clean parts for rock and metal songs. It is very full sounding and very warm. But that full sound and warmness is also its downfall (for me) ironically. Shove some overdrive in there with the Jazz pickup and it sounds pretty good. Thick crunch, nice and warm. Use the Jazz pickup with a hard rock (or maybe the verge of metal) tone... uh oh. The Jazz pickup becomes TOO warm, it actually gets muddy at that point when playing chords (the reason for the 4 star rating). Looking at the seymour duncan website, the voicing for the Jazz pickup is: B/M/T -- 5/3/9. The pickup is scooped in the mids. Without mids, clarity and articulation of notes is gone when playing chords, and the more distortion you use with the Jazz, the more its noticable. But that's my only complaint with the pickups. They are, as a set, very versatile. Plan on using the JB for all of your distortion needs, and the Jazz for cleaning things up or having a light blues overdrive. (side note: the Jazz coil split into single coil mode sounds pretty good too!!)

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

My shrink tells me I'm exhibiting signs of a midlife crisis, and rather than buying a Porsche or having an affair, I've decided to upgrade my music gear and do more playing and recording. My guitar is an SX Deimos, which is an LP knockoff, but it's got good bones; mahogany body, flamed maple top, etc. The stock pickups were EMG Selects, which were in desperate need of being upgraded. Enter the SD Hot Rodded Humbucker Set. I play mostly rock, punk and metal, and the bridge pickup gives me the gain that type of playing demands, while the Jazz neck pickup makes clean tones sound buttery smooth. I had a roller bridge and Bigsby tremolo installed at the same time, and I am just tickled by what looks, feels, and most importantly sounds like a brand new guitar.

      Amazing

      By Poor GAS Guitarist

      from In the south

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

These are definitely worth the money. You save alot by buying them together instead of separate. I looked for months to find the right new combo of pickups, but alot of the combos were focused on one genre. I am a poor teen with no job so all i can afford is a Epi SG so i bought it and tried to fix it up so it is more playable and all I had left to do was upgrade the pickups. Every thing kept leading me toward Seymour Duncans, mostly the SH-4. This set is so versatile and i love that because i play all styles.THE Jazz PU almost made me cry when i heard it. The muddiness was gone, MY BABY HAD SOME BASS TO IT. Man this truly will make you happy if you buy it. how can you resist that sound for that price.

      Fantastic upgrade for most guitars

      By Tommy

      from Portland, OR

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I dropped a set into my 10 year old Epi Les Paul 100, looking for more bite and clarity. I got it in spades. The neck pup is now more crisp, not muddy, and more expressive on rock or blues solos. The bridge pup is wild - harmonics off the chart, lots of growl on overdrive, a real change from stock. It helped change the personality of this inexpensive axe, although it's still a low-end Epiphone (average fit and finish, string buzz after several set-up's, average tuners). I recommend these SD's - if they can produce such noticeable changes in my practice guitar, imagine what they'd do for a mid-range unit like Gibson Studio.

I just bought these for my Epiphone Les Paul Standard, and they work great! I'm a beatles type of guy they work great for soft pop/rock, but in my band we play loads of metal, and they are perfect for that too! You can't go wrong with the Hot Rodded Pickups, they deliver the sound tone and quality you should expect from Seymour Duncan!

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

I put these in my Epiphone Les Paul plus top and man what a difference. These things ring out when played clean and when you kick in the distortion oh my... they are heavy. They also have a great tonal response as well. You can ease up on the volume when in overdrive and they clean up pretty good and then roll on the volume and they get nasty again. These pickups turned my Epiphone into a top end sounding guitar

        I'm a believer now !

        By BDRocker

Comments about Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded Humbucker Set:

Five months ago, I've replaced the stock PU of my PRS Tremonti SE with this pair, and it's history. Wiring and soldering is easy, I did it myself. The sound and tone coming out of this is heaven ! It makes me play and jam for hours. Distortion and sustain are amazing with these pick-ups. Don't believe the negative review from other people here, this pair can do all types of music, it just depends on how your guitar playing skills really is. Seymour Duncan products are top of the line, this Hotrodded is no exception. This pair can match up with other "elite" humbuckers out there. Prove these "non-believers" wrong, see it for yourself. You'll be happy with this purchase.
