Overview

The Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set honors guitar hero Slash with his first signature pickups. The tone of this pickup set will be familiar to anyone who has heard Slash's recorded tone. Though he has dozens of amazing guitars, since 1986 Slash has pretty much used one very special Les Paul for all of his recordings. The Alnico II Pro Slash was designed to give Slash's other Les Paul guitars (what he calls his "live guitars") the exact tone of his legendary guitar.

Like the standard APH-1 Alnico II Pro, which Slash has used for years, the Slash APH-2 set uses Alnico 2 magnets. However, the Alnico II Pro Slash is wound with just enough boosted output to push a stock Les Paul toward the sweet sustain and rude crunch that characterize Slash's sound. In addition, Seymour Duncan enhances the APH-2 pickups with some of the same appointments found on the Duncan pickups seen in Slash's '86 recording axe: a single-conductor cable, a long-legged bottom plate, and a wooden spacer. For true fans, or for players who want to capture Slash's recorded tone, these Seymour Duncan pickups are a critical part of the tone chain. These are same pickups found in the newest Gibson Slash model Les Paul guitar.

With the ubiquitous top hat and shades, a mop of black curls obscuring his face, and a blazing electric guitar tone blasting through a wall of amps, Slash epitomizes the very reasons we first air-strummed a low-slung tennis racquet in the privacy of our bedroom. For over 3 decades Slash has relied on Seymour Duncan pickups for his guitar tone.

Applications:
Warm, moderate-output humbucker. Recommended for jazz, blues, and classic rock.

Complete setup:
The Slash aficionado will use a pair of these pickups to capture that unmistakable tone. This pickup matches well with the SFX-11 Twin Tube Blue all-tube overdrive-distortion stompbox (sold separately) for singing leads and authoritative chording.

Guitars:
While designed for use in a Les Paul, this pickup works well in any well-balanced humbucker-equipped guitar. Also works great with hollow and semi-hollow body guitars.

The Alnico II Pro Slash is hand built in Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara, California workshop and includes all mounting hardware. Recommended for the neck and bridge position.

Un-freakin-believable!!!!!

By Casey

from McKinney, Tx

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

So I got these pickups mainly because I love the sound of Seymour Duncans, but to also get that great classic rock/blues rock sound like on some of the snakepit albums. WOW. I can't stop playing on them. If you have the patience to play with your eq, these pickups can create a wonderful array of tones and textures. I'm not a slash fanboy per se...but these are amazing and definitely reflect his tone and style. I play a lot of classic/blues rock and red dirt...and if I ever get another Les Paul, I am having these put in automatically. The tone, pick response, and versatility makes these a top notch pickup. You will not be disappointed from AC/DC to Cross Canadian Ragweed (providing you adjust your eq). A must have from now on.

The greatest pickups ever!!!

By Alex

from kissimmee, fl

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

What can I say? These are the greatest pickups ever! I have an epiphone les paul standard, I had the regular SD alnico 2 pro pickups on my guitar, but they were really weak, so I bought the slash ones and woah, they were alot stronger, and when you play a little bit with you're amp's settings, you can get the AFD sound with these pickups!!!

Just what I expected..

By Dr. Bluestarrman

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra and I wanted a bit more than the stock pick-ups generally offer. Just what I expected......and well worth the money! You can play articulated riffs (ex: Slash, of course) and balls out raunch with the simple use of your volume and tone controls. The articulation is always there but at higher volume, tone and gain settings....the notes seem to sing a little longer or added sustain. I love the tones and flavors of notes that I can achieve with the two Semour Duncans. Now imagine the contrast that an Ultra (with the Nanomag) as a third pickup can offer. I can get acoustic clean or add some dirt with the gain..but the review is for the pickups and there is a noticeable difference with the stock and pickups that I had professionally placed for me. Great tones and added jazzy nuances. I am very happy with my choice but not surprised. Semour Duncan has been at it for a long time. Just what I expected....

Fantastic best SD set I have used to date

By Zakk

from Albany NY

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

I have SD sets like the Hot rod JB/Jazz and Mayhem distortions as well as all other SD humbucker combos and I love them all but this set is very special. Both pickups are fantastic but I have to say the neck just shines past all my other SD necks. The sustain is incredible as well as the warmth when the tone is rolled back. It does not go flat and drop sustain or clarity it just gets fuller sounding. I love GNR and have played lots of Slash stuff but really did not get these to get that sound. I am so glad I did. The sweet solo sound I get from that pickup just makes nailing a slash solo so much easier to reach, but it is far from limited to the Slash sound. It was always so hard to get that sustain and never had that same warm tone with any other SD even the Alnico II. These are different for sure so if you ask can I save a buck and just get the Alnico II and still get the same sound I can answer from a hands on point of view "No". SD advertising on this is very accurate Even if you are not shooting for slashes sound these pickups produce many unique and very musical tones. Every musician should try a set. They are the best upgrade for the dollar I have spent in the last 20 years.

I Was Really Hesitant But... The Voice is Incredible!

By James Whitcher

from Orchard Park, NY

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

I have been extremely reluctant to change out my original t-tops on my 74 LPC. I shopped around and talked to a lot of people. In the end, I just bit the bullet and bought a set... not for the Slash sound, but to see what the difference was from my originals (outside of the worn off gold plating). I plugged into my JVM410 for the first time without any effects to get a feel for what these things can do. Ran through the channels, eventually adding a Wah and some modulation... then a little more front-end punch. These things are pretty flexible and dynamic. They respond well to pick attack , and sustain very well on the clean channels! As you crunch them, they seem to warm up a bit in the mid-range like my stock pickups. This tweaks out well with the instrument tone knobs. But when you really push them, the tonal quality doesn't decay (unlike my stock pickups). I highly recommend trying this set of pups out. Whether you are shooting for the Slash sound, or not. At the end of the day, there is a lot more to a gifted player's unique sound than pickups. This is a VERY GOOD set of pickups.

BEST PICKUPS EVER

By Casey

from Ann Arbor

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

Put these into my 2012 Gibson Les Paul Traditional and I cant even start to say how much of a difference they have made. Out of everything from Emg's to Lace Sensors..... Nothing has come close to even touching these when it comes to the tone. Anything rock and roll especially GnR sounds unreal with these. I highly recommend buying these. $189 Is a steal for these and trust me when I say they are worth every single penny. I have nothing but good to say about these. They are Incredible.

Amazing Pickups

By Thelonius

from Scott, LA

About Me Experienced

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

These are some of the best sounding pickups to install in a Les Paul. They have just a touch more brightness and articulation than Gibson's 57 Classic while retaining that thick, buttery tone that Les Paul's are known for. I replaced the stock Gibson 59 tributes in a 2014 Les Paul Traditional with these and WOW!
Just the tone I was looking for. If you are looking for a creamy, thick but still articulate tone, these pickups are worth giving a try to. Seymor Duncan and Slash have created a really awesome, affordable set of pickups.

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

These were the first pickups I ever bought and Installed in my Epi Les paul. The stock pickups were just too muddy and I was craving that Slash tone. Put on the neck pickup and play the intro to sweet child, I had the biggest smile on my face. Honestly the AP2 Slash Neck pickup is one of the best pickups ive ever heard, This pickup is very EQed to the mids and it sounds like butter to me, great for soloing and leads. not so great for upstroke ska type, but then again i would go with a overall cleaner setup. These pickups are a bit hot.

The only thing I don't like is how much mids the bridge pickup has. Its great for slash tone, but not the best for versatility in the classic rock department IN MY OPINION. For example a Led zep riff would just be off a bit. I wound up getting a JB for the bridge, and keeping the AP2 in the neck.

I never modded a guitar before but wanted to change the gold hardware on my black LP studio. I am not an expert and debated various pickups but decided on these because of Seymour Duncan's reputation and being a huge fan of Slash. The demo videos i saw with the variety of sweet tones out of these pickups - from hard rock crunch to Pink Floyd sweet tones. Had everything i was looking for - they look and sound great and made me love my guitar again.

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

I put a set of Seymour Duncan Slash pickups in my Ibanez SAS32EX. Essentially, I put a set of Slash humbuckers in a 'semi-super' Strat. They replaced the Ibanez 'Tru Duo' set that were there. The result? Fantastic. They have a upper mid-range definition and clarity - a 'voice' - that makes them stand out against the hollow, plastic, and boxy-sounding pickups that come stock in most guitars. They're not one-trick-ponies. They lend themselves to almost any style of music. I took the modded guitar to an open mic and backed up other artists playing everything from Rage Against the Machine to Linda Ronstadt and they just worked. Incredible pickups.

        Details:
After spending a little time disconnecting all the connections from the 5-conductor pickups to the push-pull pots and other minutae in the guitar, I realized this really should be a re-wiring as well as a pickup replacement. I put in a new set of 500k mini-pots and a new Fender 3-way switch. Essentially its wired up like a Telecaster. I used a .022 cap for the tone. The tone doesn't roll off as much high end as it would do ordinarily. More on that later.

It pays to take your time in doing this kind of work. Measure twice, cut once, solder when you're good and ready!

Seymour Duncan supplies many different wiring diagrams that help you get the work done. They didn't make one connection very understandable (you have to either bend the lug into the pot and apply solder, or run a wire from the back of the pot to the lug) and omitted a connection (the guitar hummed badly and the controls didn't work until I put in a wire between the two pots that I found while looking around the Ibanez site and pulling up their wiring diagrams. Putting in that wire was strictly a guess on my part)

The Fender switch doesn't really fit in the guitar. The back plate is lifted up very slightly and I had to bend the tabs down. But it worked so SCORE! The tone knob has very little effect until the last few percent.

Comments about Seymour Duncan APH-2s Alnico II Pro Slash Humbucker Electric Guitar Pickup Set:

I purchased these pickups because I am a huge fan of Slash. I absolutely love his tone and pretty much every song he has ever touched. I expected these pickups to make a slight difference in the tone of my guitar by adding a little bit of sustain and adding some "slashiness." What I didn't expect was the be absolutely blown away. There is no tone or sound that cannot be achieved with the pickups. I put them in my Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro and was shocked. You genuinely can get Slash's Appetite for Destruction tone if you use these pickups. I'm not even running my guitar through a high end amp like a Marshall. I am playing through a line6 Spider IV 120W and I am still able to get those kind of tones. I can't even imagine how good it would sound if played through a JCM 800. I would recommend these not only to every Slash fan, but to every rock fan out there. These pickups truly do give you an endless amount of possibilities regarding tone.

I replaced the stock PRS SE 245 humbuckers on a PRS SE Bernie Marsden model single cut LP-style guitar with these SD Slash pickups. The guitar itself is EXCELLENT. I recommend it to everyone... try to find one, it's well worth the search. With the Slash SD's in it, the guitar is a monster! Incredible tones and harmonics. They can drive an amp hard and clean up for some no-too-gritty blues if you want. I could not be happier. I reach for this guitar now more than several of the Gibson Les Pauls I own. Paired with an Orange OR15 or an HK Tubemeister 18 it sounds like a dream.
