All I can say is GOOD LORD! This pickup is BAD TO THE BONE baby. My USA Tele sounds like a cross between a Les Paul and a Telecaster now. It has the thick, raw power of a Les Paul combined with the punch and bite of the Telecaster. I love it. And yes, you still can clean it up and the "Tele twang" is still there, not as much as a single coil of course, but it's still there. This tone combination is perfect for my style of playing which is kind of a cross between Gary Moore and Hughie Thomasson(Outlaws). I ordered the neck position pickup too but it will be just a little while longer before it is available. I have three USA Teles and I plan on installing these babies in one of others too. If you want to sound like Vince Gill or Brad Paisley then you probably should stick to vintage style single coils, but if want your Tele to have a bigger, fatter sound that burns the house down, this is the pickup you need. BTW, I use a 1981 Marshall single channel 50 watt half stack with original GT75 12 inch speakers, these pickups really smoke the tubes into a KILLER overdrive.......This about a thick as a Tele can get.

  • Great crunch, but not perfect

As reviewed by Kelly on 11/15/2007

I play moderate to hard rock, and the stock bridge pickup on my 2000 US tele was too thin for high-gain playing. I've put Duncans in a number of guitars in the past and have always been happy with the change. The hot rails pickup is, as noted by others reviewing it, a great, hot humbucker for crunch, and clean sounds are less harsh than the stock pickup. However, to my ear the hotrail has a much more compressed sound (as I suppose one would expect going from a single coil to a humbucker) and you lose that singing, open-sounding bite that I associate with Fender style guitars. This is a good sounding pickup, and it works for the music I'm playing, but it's a trade off for sure.

I have a traditional nashville telecaster and did research for months before I decided to make the plunge with this pickup. I was torn between a little 59 and the hotrails. I decide on the hotrails because I do a lot of string bends and vibrato and I always struggle with losing the signal in the middle of a string bend. The hotrails specialty is holding onto that signal no matter where your strings are. People told me I would lose some of my twang with the hotrails. Listen to me. You will not be sorry with this pickup. I still have all of my twang but with a much fuller tone, I don?t have to play as hard and amazingly this pickup is also so much cleaner when I do play hard and fast scales. It is not a metal pickup contrary to what most people will tell you. It makes my blues sound killer, my country twangy and full, and of course it rocks. You will not be disappointed with this pickup in your telecaster. If you?re even remotely thinking about an upgrade for your tele. Get the hotrails. You will not be disappointed.
