Seymour Duncan SPH90-1n Phat Cat Guitar Pickup (102555075)
Availability:

Add P-90 sound to your humbucker-equipped axe.

A Phat Cat is an actual single-coil P-90 Soapbar guitar pickup that fits under a humbucker guitar pickup cover and drops into humbucker-equipped guitars. The tone is big and fat, er, phat. It uses two Alnico 2 magnets for more sustain and softer attack. Also, the metal covers provide more shielding and noise reduction than standard soapbar covers. Comes with single-conductor hookup cable.

  • Great in a Telecaster, too

As reviewed by Andrew on 10/31/2009

I originally got the SPH90-1B Phat Cat to replace the bridge pickup in my Ibanez hollowbody. In a fit of weirdness, though, I ended up installing in the neck position on my 2006 Telecaster. I decided to remove the pick guard to take a look at the rout and think about some new pickup options, and decided to see if the Phat Cat would fit...and it dropped right in!! With much better output than the stock neck pickup, it remains well balanced when clean, but turns to pure raunch and snot when you add fuzz, overdrive or distortion. The tones I got from this amazing (not so) little guy in the neck ranged from beautiful to screaming. And in a surprise turn, when I tried blending the stock Fender bridge pickup with the Phat Cat in the neck, I found one of the glassiest, clearest clean tones my ears have EVER encountered. Tele players, take note, this pickup really can help your favorite Fender do anything!

  • Adding bite to your guitar

As reviewed by Pedro Amado on 10/9/2010

i have always been a strat fan but so many people speak so highly of Les Pauls that i had to try one, i bought a nice black Les Paul Studio 1997 with a rare ebony fingerboard and though i love the sounds it gives with distortion the cleans were never very satisfying....i decided to try and fix this by replacing the bridge pickup and read a lot and finally purchased the phat cat, after replacing the original the original Gibson Humbucker that comes stock with the new phat cat my Les Paul has come alive!! the cleans have improved so much and the distortion is so clear!! i certainly would recommend it to anyone who wants to improve the cleans and all around sound on an Humbucker equipped guitar...

  • Great Pickup

As reviewed by Michael on 3/25/2009

I play a Gibson Les Paul Studio and I must say that this pickup has truly brought out the best in my guitar sound. My guitar started with the burst buckers that were a bit too bright and lacked real power in the lower frequencies. I then moved to Zakk Wylde EMG's that were brutal for heavy stuff but I moved on from that. I remember playing my buddies Les Paul Jr. with a P90 through my gear and it sounded amazing. I could have my distortion set pretty heavy but still get clean open chords. I went to Guitar Center and bought the Phat Cat to fill in my hum bucker space in the bridge position... perfection. I get compliments all the time on my set up and it is largely due to this pickup. If you have a hum bucker space and want a real single coil P90 sound, this is the one for you.
