A sweetheart pickup for a legendary guitar.

The Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue pickup delivers traditional, sweet and even tone that just drips with all the sparkle and twang you'd expect out of a truly righteous Tele guitar.

When Jerry Donahue needed a touring guitar with the exact same sound as his prized '52, he turned to Seymour Duncan, who accurately duplicated the warm, punchy tone of their bridge pickup. Seymour used Alnico II rod magnets and a special wind for increased sustain. Symmetrically staggered pole pieces mirror the fingerboard radius and assure that the Jerry Donahue pickup gives you exceptionally balanced string-to-string response.

Seymour Duncan Jerry Donahue Electric Guitar Pickup Features:

  • Accurately duplicates Donahue's '52 Tele bridge pickup
    Alnico II magnets
    Increased sustain
    Symmetrically staggered pole pieces

As reviewed by Leo Thomas on 11/9/2010

I was agonising over this pickup and the Dimarzio Twang King & Virtual Vintage pickups. I decided to go with the Seymour Duncan option as I have Duncans in my other guitars and have been very please with those so far. I basically searched Youtube for some demos but didn't find anything usefull so I searched for demos of the Peavey Omniac guitar which is fitted with this pickup which helped me make my decision. I was looking for a typical Tele tone (if there is such a thing) I guess mainly a vintage 50's sound. The pickup is paired with a Seymour Duncan Vintage 54 in the neck (STR-1). Firstly when you look at this pickup and hold it , you can feel that it's quality, it's very well built. 2 conducter wire so it's a piece of cake to install. Now I was always of the understanding that you needed Alnico 5 magnets to get the bite and attack out of a pickup so I was a bit unsure about this being Alnico 2, I previously owned the Alnico Pro 2's some years ago and don't recall them having the twang I was looking for but that could have been for a number of other reasons (old age memory loss being one o them). Well I was wrong...this pickup is just what I was looking for. It's got "Twang"and it's got bite without ripping your head off. SD say it's been modelled after Jerry Donahue's 52 Tele and judging from what I've heard on Youtube of 52 Tele's I think the got it right. (Check out Jim Weider on Youtube to get an idea of this pickup). I made the right decision in purchasing this pickup. It was to replace a weak and microphonic bridge pickup in a "Fame Hondo Series 757" (don't laugh it's actually a nice guitar). This pickup would be great for, Country, Classic Rock, Blues, Pop...the only thing I can't see it working for is Metal. I think the tone chart that SD have for this pickup is spot on, maybe it has an ever so slightly notched up midrange but thats no bad thing. The pickup by itself and together with the STR-1 sounds great!! Now I hate when people say in reviews "if it were lost or stolen I would blah blah blah" as if the pickup would some how get mysteriously lost or stolen out of a guitar (attack of the pickup snatchers?). That being said, I would highly recommend this pickup as an upgrade to any Telecaster that has sub-standard pickups.
