Overview

The Sennheiser e 838 microphone from the evolution 800 Series has been engineered for the vocalist who needs the vocals to cut through the band. Due to its excellent acoustic properties, the e 838 mic delivers a high signal output to cut through high on-stage sound levels with ease. A gentle presence boost to even tonal response ensures vocal clarity and projection. The balanced frequency response maintains signal quality when moving on and off-axis during performance. The minimal proximity effect provides for consistently clear bass-end performance when singing closer to, or further from the microphone. The cardioid pick-up pattern provides excellent feedback rejection and good isolation from incidental rear noise. The rugged metal construction and internal damping isolates handling noise.

This microphone has exquisite tone; it's been a pure joy to record with these. The slightly boosted bass presence is a plus, adding depth to choral/classical work. The pickup dials down quickly with distance from the mic, so stay close. This is nice for loud stages, but you might need a 'b/p/t' filter for singers with breathy pronunciation. Construction is rugged; this microphone is heavy and solid (330g). It feels like it'd be okay even if you dropped it; might get heavy if you're holding it for a long set. XLR connection; includes wiring instructions to convert to regular or unbalanced 1/8" as well.

I have been playing 1-3 gigs a week since 1987 I sing country, southern rock, and blues. This mic has no mid range it is like bass and treble and for a male it is missing our range. It does not compare to a sm58. I am not a shure guy I have always used EV967 and will be going back to one of those.

Great mike for low softer voice

    By Ashley Traylor

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I perform in a small restaurant - bar. Using this mic, acoustonic 35 amp, and a Mitchell MD100SCE acoustic/electric guitar. When I started I was using a sennheiser 822, and had to sing very close to the mic and louder than my normal singing voice. After switching to the 838 people tell me I have increased my singing volume. But actually I am singing little softer that I was with the 822. Also I don't have to worry about singing close to the mic. Great mic for low softer voice!

    Very Well Suited

    By Daniel Grubbs

    from Greenville, SC

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

As a self-recording artist, I decided to get a good, solid microphone that both had quality in the studio and could hold its own in a live setting. Also, it looks beautiful, and has an awesome feel. I've used this microphone to record my voice in several songs already, and the quality rivals that of my $500 Condenser Microphone. Secondly, in the Live Setting, it has been used to play in lue with bass, drums, two guitars and background voices, and it still comes through and gets it done right. I would recommend this to anyone. The only concerns I have are fairly basic. 1. You can't be too loud right up close to the mic. It overloads it. If you're going to sing loud, you have to be farther back from it. It can take more noise than your average mic, you just have to give the noise properly. 2. The Cardioid Pattern provides very good cancellation (Live Setting), but sometimes even the angle you hold the mic towards your mouth (45 degrees vs. say 80 degrees) can make a big difference. It takes some playing around with its pattern to get the best cancellation. For the amount you pay, this is a stellar deal. I would highly recommend it. As a Side Note: - The microphone comes with a protective case, but the case is just like a fanny pack. Light, and thin. May want to invest in something more substantial if you plan on bringing this to a lot of different events. - It also comes with a mic clip. I was unaware of this when I purchased this mic, so I bought another mic clip, which worked out well. Different stands have different widths of the attachment screws. The one with this mic is about 1/4". My equipment uses 1/2".

    Can't go wrong

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

In seaching for a new mic and trying to get away from the sm58, i tried 3 different mics they were, beta58, Audix om5, and the e838. In my opinion the beta was still muddy (like the sm58) the om5 was way to thin, but when i sang through the e838 I had mad it home :) Its a great mic and for the money you wont go wrong buying this mic........

    Excellent Mic!

    By Allman Trower Hendrix Skynyrd

    from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I bought this mic 2 years ago. My band plays loud, so I needed a mic that would cut through the mix. On occasion I will arrive at a gig where the sound engineer has the house mics already set up & ready to go. I have reluctantly had to use less powerful mics at times like SM58's, which don't come close. This mic always delivers! My vocals are always loud & clear. I highly recommend this mic to anyone who sings for a living.

    Beats out Shure!

    By Max

    from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Just tried this out against a Beta 57 and another Senn. The e838 was much clearer and more natural sounding. Tried it on an Acoustasonic Jr. and a Fishman Loudbox 100 and it sounded the best by far. The Beta 57 is nice but it's got that same reverby overtone that the SMs and PGs have -- which sounds great for some people but I have a low voice and I sing mostly quiet tunes and I definitely preferred the grittier, truer sound from the e838.

    Versatile Dynamic Mic

    By Gordon K

    from Eugene, ORegon

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

I've been looking for the perfect dynamic microphone for my studio, for rock vocals. This one's quite good. There is high frequency detail that rivals a condenser, but it's much more forgiving, and has little of the brittle tone that condensers can produce. The mic's boosted bass response is a bit more than is ideal, perhaps, but a little eq takes care of that, easily. The mild presence boost improves intelligibility and clarity, especially in a headphone cue mix during tracking. The mic is a bit sensitive to plosives and breath, but good vocal technique and/or a popper-stopper provide an easy remedy. This is a very good mic at a very good price.

    Perfect Vocal Mike

    By Joseph Cornbread Fabian

    from Belfast, Maine

Comments about Sennheiser e 838 Dynamic Microphone:

Recently my favorite mike died(moment of silence, please). It was 30+ years old and had seen many dances. After a couple(expensive) trial and errors, I found the 838. As a dance caller, I don't have the luxory(or patience)of holding the mike right in front of my mouth. This is perfect for callers as they can hold the mike perpindicular to tne floor. Works perfect even if you rest it on your chin. I recommend this to those who are in the calling business.
