The biggest misconception I have noticed when looking at reviews for monitor headphones is that people buy them for recreation or they buy them and don't understand exactly what they're used for. As monitor headphones, these Sennheisers are very effective at noise cancellation and demonstrating clarity at really all acoustic ranges. DO NOT buy any monitor 'phones just looking for that big bass range everyone loves to get out of their listening-for-pleasure music. You'll rarely find it. Monitor headphones are geared toward delivering the most unbiased and clearest sound possible for attention to detail in all acoustic depths. These headphones are a glorious, cost-effective addition to my gear as I study recording/mixing art at Columbia College Chicago, and I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to listen to a purer form of most any musical piece at a very agreeable price.

There's some inconsistency in the upper bass and the midrange, as well as some fizz to the highs. Rat Sound appears to have determined that much of the problem is the driver housing that resonates bad. I would avoid these until Sennheiser improves the plastic contruction (better plastic or thicker) or makes a version out of magnesium alloy. While the bass does go deeper than the MDR 7506 and is a little less distorted, the midrange is just not as flat and there's too much other weird stuff going on with the HD280. This is potentially a GREAT headphone, but not yet. Sennheiser claims they improved the plastic on the headband once before to eliminate the breaking problem, so they just need another revision to clear up the sound.

'Phones with features

By Misconduct2K

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

These headphones have some very nice features that many other headphones don't execute very well. I love the fact that the padding and cable can be replaced. I have had other headphones that needed to be thrown out because the cable broke or the padding was worn out. The collapsible earpieces save a ton of room. These headphones can be extremely loud, but because they isolate outside noise well, you don't necessarily NEED to turn them up. I have found them to be pretty accurate, but I think the midrange is a bit scooped and the lows and highs are a bit boosted. I find them to be very useful when listening to a mix on many different sets of speakers - many people listen on their monitors and in their car...but don't forget to listen with headphones as well! These have helped me balance out a few mixes here and there. Comfortable to wear for extended listening, and such a great value!

wow!

By Brian Happ

from chicago, illinois

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

Im, blown away by these phones. the sound quality is excelllent(though the bass could be boosted a bit more, but thats just me.) When drumming i can play and not drown out what i'm listening to, so i don't have to blast them. I got a pair of bose phones for my birthday but ended up returning them because they just couldn't handle outside noise so i still had to blast them to get a good balance. I would recomend these for any drummer especially because of the 100$ price tag.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I have had a pair of these headphones since, well i cant remember when I got them because I have never had a problem with them. They are great for recording in a studio or listining to music just for fun. They cancel out almost all of the noise from around you allowing you to be able to hear the music very clearly.

Amazing Phones

By DJ Apex

from Bellingham, WA

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I got these about 6 months ago and wow. They're probably the best value on the market for sound quality. Super-crisp through the whole range with no noticeable dips in frequency response. I also use them to DJ, so the swivel cups are nice. And they isolate sound like crazy, which also helps when spinning in a loud environment.

Great Value for a Great Product

By DJ Stroppy

from Newtown, PA

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

We bought these recently for my son who is a fledgling DJ. He wanted Mix-quality headphones that allowed him to record and sample his techno tracks (he uses Reason with great success). He also wanted to use them for his raves, in order to cutdown on the background noise while he is DJ'ing in our basement. The Sennheisers are great in both respects. Sound reproduction and noise reduction are excellent for headphones at this price. We both highly recommend this product (not to mention it lets the rest of the family hear the television :-).

HD280 Pro in the Home Studio

By ccasch

from New York

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

In my humble estimation, these are the best choice for general studio duties (home or professional). The bass may lack, but my solution there is to back fill with the studio monitors. The noise attenuation on the HD280Pro is certainly adequate enough to block out the mids and upper freqs from the monitors so you get the whole picture.

A good value for the price

By Fuzzball

from Ida, MI

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

These headphones are very good for the price. The bass response is very good and the highs are also reflected well. The headphones are constructed well (better than the Behringer HPX3000) and the cord is thicker. They are very comfortable to wear for hours at a time. I would recommend getting these if you are an active musician.

Excellent for some applications

By jorge

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

The best merit of these headphones is how well they isolate you from external sounds. That makes them very suited for situations when you want to be isolated, like recording drums, for instance, because you would hear what the microphones are getting, rather than the sound of the drums themselves. The acoustic isolation also prevents the sound for leaking out, so the backtrack you are hearing while recording your voice will never leak to the microphone, for instance, even if you like it loud on your ears. On most headphones, achieving isolation usually comes at the cost of a not so great sound quality, but, the HD280pro sound remarkably well for the isolation they provide, and that is why I recommend them for any application where sound isolation is important. Also, they are reasonable comfortable for wearing extended periods of time. (Unless you have a really big head) For plain enjoying the sound of music, I'm sure a more beautiful sound and more comfort can be found at the same price range if you are willing to sacrifice the privacy of isolation. If you like high volume, these certainly deliver. I would not recommend these headphones to make critical mixing decisions. They were never meant to be for that use, even though they are reasonable flat. They don't have the desirable detail and spaciousness for that purpose. They would tire your brain pretty quickly, and you would hear unexpected surprises later.

Live Sound Headphones

By Daniel Chapman

from San Marcos, TX

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

When I started recording shows at clubs, I realized I needed some headphones that could keep out the sound. These headphones do it, and do it well...especially for the price($100)! I take these out to clubs and use them in my home studio for reference, and they don't even look worn yet. The even levels compinsate for my krk 5 monitors that are lacking low end. Good buy!

Insane bang-for-buck value

By Aaron B

from Corvallis, OR

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

After careful research, I bought these headphones about 6 months ago, and they have yet to let me down. Aside from the amazing qudio quality -- which has been a priceless tool for getting perfectly balanced mixes -- are all the little things that make this a lifetime purchase. The earpieces fold to 90 degrees, easily permitting flat storage to prevent accidental damage in transit, and any parts that are subject to wear and tear are fully modular. I made the mistake of leaving these plugged into my laptop, which slid off of my couch, plug-first, onto the floor, leaving the 1/8" plug nicely bent. Went to Sennheiser's website and was amazed to find replacement cables, ear foam padding and even top foam padding replacements. For the low price, there is no reason to buy anything else! Only downsides include bass that seems lacking from time to time, and if you're a hothead, the earphones can get quite hot during extended sessions. Else these are the last headphones you will ever buy.

Very Comfortable, good sound

By kirk

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I got these on a special sale for $69 + a coupon so they were dirt cheap. For that money, these are a great value. I use them for practice with my Roland TD-30KV kit and they sound excellent. They are very comfortable and block most external sound. My old cans used to hurt my ears after a while (they were very old and the padding over the ears was shot). Even at $99, these are a good deal, but wait for a sale or coupon and they will be a great deal.

Like it loud?

By Mike_in_NJ

from East Coast, USA

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

These are some very nice headphones. They have a very different sound, compared to something like the Sony MDR-7506's. I'd describe the sound of these Sennheisers are having the "rock and roll" EQ curve. Lots of highs and lows, slightly dished-out midrange. One thing I can say about these headphones is they will play LOUD. They are also excellent for blocking out extraneous noises in the room. They are a good general-purpose set of 'phones, but I don't think I'd make any crucial EQ or level changes based on their sound alone.

Great Set of Headphones

By Jeremy Blaska

from MI

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I purchased the Sennheiser HD280 headphones after using them in my friend's studio on my latest CD. They have a very flat, true response and are nice and loud. The closed back and tight (but still comfortable) fit keeps the sound in your ears and out of the microphone in front of you, making these ideal for monitoring in the studio. These are well worth the money.

nice

By The Dude

from Nashville, TN

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

People, these cans have a flat response, hence the "lack of bass". This is a good thing when using them in studio applications. In other words, if you're a bass freak that needs your head rattled, go somewhere else. These can's are well built and sound fantastic for the price tag. A great introductory set for the amature engineer or as a workhorse for your studio. These cans have been recommended for students to use from some of the top recording schools in the US. They help the music sound like it's suppose to sound. If you need more bass frequencies, you're not using them correctly.

Amazing with a twist

By Nicholas Marechal

from Slidell, Louisiana

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

The HD280 is amazing. Every note and distinction is crisp and clear. People complain that the bass isn't what it should be, but these aren't meant for ear numbing bass. They're meant for studio recording and monitoring. I use them almost everyday for hours on end. I haven't bought another pair of phones since I got these. They have a nice and thick cord that wraps like an old coiled phone cable, and my favorite part, was that the adapter that comes with them twists on, so that you don't leave the adapter in the output jack when you unplug. Just another thing Sennheiser has done to help whisk away the minor annoyances.

When you don't have a drum room...

By korz

from Chicagoland, Illinois

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I chose these headphones for our project studio for one simple reason: we don't have a drum room. I needed to be able to hear my guitar in the headphones when I was only 8 feet from my drummer's kit. There are a few other headphones that have higher isolation, but the quality of the audio was not nearly as good. These phones have both high-quality sound and very good isolation from room noise.

Nice Phones

By the81charge

from Columbus, OH

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

These headphones are great at cancelling out other noises in the room and allow you to monitor while recording. I use them to use while recording the drum track and they definitely have the volume to do the job. The only drawback I noted is that they don't have much of low frequency respose (bass/synth). Other than that a great set of phones.
