The biggest misconception I have noticed when looking at reviews for monitor headphones is that people buy them for recreation or they buy them and don't understand exactly what they're used for. As monitor headphones, these Sennheisers are very effective at noise cancellation and demonstrating clarity at really all acoustic ranges. DO NOT buy any monitor 'phones just looking for that big bass range everyone loves to get out of their listening-for-pleasure music. You'll rarely find it. Monitor headphones are geared toward delivering the most unbiased and clearest sound possible for attention to detail in all acoustic depths. These headphones are a glorious, cost-effective addition to my gear as I study recording/mixing art at Columbia College Chicago, and I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to listen to a purer form of most any musical piece at a very agreeable price.

The Senn 280s are a pretty good headphone for their price. They have a clear, analytical sound that's very strong in the highs and a bit quiet in the bass. They block out external noise very well. They do have a couple of problems. They clamp your head quite tightly, which can get uncomfortable after a while. They get quite warm. The 280s are a great headphone for the price, but if your budget can cope, I'd suggest a step up. The AKG 271s are better but require a headphone amp. Beyerdynamics 250-80 are probably best if you don't have an amp.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I've used these for years. Discovered them back in 2007. I've produced about 125 songs since then, and always use these to check levels at high gain, and very low gain. They always provide a true neutral at both ends of the spectrum, at least to my ears. They've also proven themselves as a reference when cross checked against several different applications. Always proves itself in the middle ground. Great buy!

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I use these in my home studio for laying tracks. I bought them as a back up set but find I like them better than my others. They sound great clear and haven't gotten any bleed on tracks. They aren't pro studio quality but for my home studio they do what they say. They cord is to short but grab a extension and it's fine. Over all worth the price if your not ready to buy a higher model

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I had read about how the Sennheiser HD280 Pro headphones fit snugly, passively cancled noise fairly well, and provided full, clear and relatively-uncolored sound. I can hereby concur.

The fit, particularly at the top (the headband) might be too snug for some people, but the padding makes it comfortable enough for me. The earcups fit well around the ears, and aren't as shallow as other models' can be. They do isolate sound rather well, reducing the noise of my A/C unit a couple meters from my desk to a low, faint hum, which disappears when music is playing. That quality in conjunction with well-balanced and full sound were the reasons I'd wanted these headphones, as I was looking for some to use while using my computer, near my A/C unit, to create music without the distraction of external persistent noise, and also wanting some headphones to do real duty in recording vocals and not having to worry about comfort and leaking audio.

The sound quality is superb; one might have to spend several times more for closed-back headphones with appreciably better sound quality. Although I love the sound (and prefer the fit) of my open-back AKG K240s, with the HD280s I can hear more detail in the highs, and drums sound as punchy as they should.

It has been said that the HD280s aren't so great with lower-output portable devices, but they can get loud enough driven by my Android smartphone. Otherwise, I tried these out on two loud rock songs, coincidentally from 1977 (back before "brickwalling" and such depleted dynamic range and spatial detail). First was "Holidays in the Sun" by the Sex Pistols. It felt like hearing the song for the first time, all over again, as I had back when it was new. This time, I could notice the slight delay used on the vocal. Next, it was "Live Wire" by AC/DC, recorded live at Atlantic Studios in 1977. It sounded like I was in the room with Bon Scott, and I could hear the sound of the pick on the strings of Angus Young's guitar.

    Go ahead and buy 'em.

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I have a pair of HD 650s that I use for mixing, as they are comfortable, flat, and translate very well to the monitors I have. I tried using them during a live performance and it was a fail, the open back design allows too much sound in and it was near pointless.

Since I love my 650s, I wanted to stick with Sennheiser and after some research I purchased the HD 280s.

These cans are great. They are snug enough to not fall off the head, and they cancel outside noise very well. I'm now using them for live performances as well as just another set of speakers to mix in the studio. The bass performance and flat quality of the Sennheiser brand are excellently implemented in these headphones.

I needed a set of headphones to use with my electric drum kit and after reading about every review there was - these seemed to always come out in the top 2 to 4! What sold me on them was the range and brand name!

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I actually returned this product in favor of Bose headphones - however, I would still recommend this product.

I was purchasing headphones primarily to use with my electric violin so that I could practice it silently. My friend recommended these because they are great studio headphones for a great price. I definitely liked them, and I think they are great headphones for a great price, especially if you are looking to use them for studio work/mixing since they provide a clean, unaltered sound. However, as they are studio headphones, they are somewhat bulky, and they don't have much bass, so I went in favor of the less bulky Bose headphones that I can both use for practicing violin, and also for listening to music.
