The biggest misconception I have noticed when looking at reviews for monitor headphones is that people buy them for recreation or they buy them and don't understand exactly what they're used for. As monitor headphones, these Sennheisers are very effective at noise cancellation and demonstrating clarity at really all acoustic ranges. DO NOT buy any monitor 'phones just looking for that big bass range everyone loves to get out of their listening-for-pleasure music. You'll rarely find it. Monitor headphones are geared toward delivering the most unbiased and clearest sound possible for attention to detail in all acoustic depths. These headphones are a glorious, cost-effective addition to my gear as I study recording/mixing art at Columbia College Chicago, and I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to listen to a purer form of most any musical piece at a very agreeable price.

There's some inconsistency in the upper bass and the midrange, as well as some fizz to the highs. Rat Sound appears to have determined that much of the problem is the driver housing that resonates bad. I would avoid these until Sennheiser improves the plastic contruction (better plastic or thicker) or makes a version out of magnesium alloy. While the bass does go deeper than the MDR 7506 and is a little less distorted, the midrange is just not as flat and there's too much other weird stuff going on with the HD280. This is potentially a GREAT headphone, but not yet. Sennheiser claims they improved the plastic on the headband once before to eliminate the breaking problem, so they just need another revision to clear up the sound.

    Excellent for some applications

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

The best merit of these headphones is how well they isolate you from external sounds. That makes them very suited for situations when you want to be isolated, like recording drums, for instance, because you would hear what the microphones are getting, rather than the sound of the drums themselves. The acoustic isolation also prevents the sound for leaking out, so the backtrack you are hearing while recording your voice will never leak to the microphone, for instance, even if you like it loud on your ears. On most headphones, achieving isolation usually comes at the cost of a not so great sound quality, but, the HD280pro sound remarkably well for the isolation they provide, and that is why I recommend them for any application where sound isolation is important. Also, they are reasonable comfortable for wearing extended periods of time. (Unless you have a really big head) For plain enjoying the sound of music, I'm sure a more beautiful sound and more comfort can be found at the same price range if you are willing to sacrifice the privacy of isolation. If you like high volume, these certainly deliver. I would not recommend these headphones to make critical mixing decisions. They were never meant to be for that use, even though they are reasonable flat. They don't have the desirable detail and spaciousness for that purpose. They would tire your brain pretty quickly, and you would hear unexpected surprises later.

    Very Comfortable, good sound

I got these on a special sale for $69 + a coupon so they were dirt cheap. For that money, these are a great value. I use them for practice with my Roland TD-30KV kit and they sound excellent. They are very comfortable and block most external sound. My old cans used to hurt my ears after a while (they were very old and the padding over the ears was shot). Even at $99, these are a good deal, but wait for a sale or coupon and they will be a great deal.

    Excellent

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

These headphones are my first experience with playing an acoustic electric guitar through my amp with the phones plugged in. The sound is crisp and clear, and I can hear everything that's going on. This will be a great help in improving my performance. The headphones are comfortable as well. My only concern was them cutting out as I moved around - I unplugged them, unscrewed and screwed back in the adaptor, and didn't have any more problems yet, so it may have been a bad connection. Caution is about the jack is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

    Good sound

    By

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

I bought these to use for drumset recording. I wanted to be able to hear the drums audibly, but quietly enough where I could have a click track and other pre-recorded music to record with. Overall they're pretty nice. They're a little tight (some people like that, some don't). I also have Bose QuietComfort 15's which have a battery and active noise cancellation. They're amaaaazing, but they're $300, these are $100. Unfortunately the Bose QuietComfort 15's cancel too much sometimes when recording drums (that's the only time I've ever had the problem, when the volume level of the drums being played get's too high at one particular frequency, everything drops out for a portion of a second). I also have Bose AE2's (which go for around $150) that have pretty similar sound to the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO's but are not nearly as tight. I think you can get the AE2's for around $130 now. If I had it to do over again, I would probably go with the Bose, but the Sennheiser's are good too. As a side note, since the Bose AE2's don't have noise cancellation, I never have the problem with the sound dropping out like with the Bose QuietComfort 15's.

Pros: Super comfortable. Great sound Quality. Nice and Light. Good for mixing and monitoring Great Price Cons: Chord is not easily removable Bass isn't super strong, but this is also a good thing, because you don't want super loud bass when mixing and monitoring.

Great Sound... but Not much Isolation

    By

    from Austin, TX

Comments about Sennheiser HD 280 PRO Closed-Back Headphones:

Sound quality is superb, but I was totally let down by how little these reduce sound. I bought them to play drums and listen to music simultaneously. After reading positive reviews from other drummers on this site, I thought I'd give them a shot. But man oh man... my ears are still ringing. I think I would need earplugs as well, and that is something I was trying to avoid. Vic Firth headphones reduce twice as much sound but I've had problems with Vic Firth headphones lately. Alas, I'm off to return these and try Direct Sound EX-25.

I've been using the guys for almost 10 years now and I can't say enough about them. I just ordered yet another set... That makes 4. These are excellent for all around use. Mine are being used in studio. Very comfortable for long use. Great with drums. Perfect for vocalists. Just great all around.
