For singers in loud bands.

The Sennheiser e 838 microphone from the evolution 800 Series has been engineered for the vocalist who needs the vocals to cut through the band. Due to its excellent acoustic properties, the e 838 mic delivers a high signal output to cut through high on-stage sound levels with ease. A gentle presence boost to even tonal response ensures vocal clarity and projection. The balanced frequency response maintains signal quality when moving on and off-axis during performance. The minimal proximity effect provides for consistently clear bass-end performance when singing closer to, or further from the microphone. The cardioid pick-up pattern provides excellent feedback rejection and good isolation from incidental rear noise. The rugged metal construction and internal damping isolates handling noise.

  • Pay the Extra $40 Bucks, Get a Superior Microphone

So if you made it to this review, odds are you are considering mics of "similar" performance. Shure SM58's are the industry standard, but have to work to cut through the mix for anything heavier than a pop band. No knock on Shure, they make nice high end mics for certain, but if you are considering the SM58 and are in a non Disney band, go ahead and shell out the $ for this gem. I have to say, I've been using Shure and find them excellent mics... (I have 57's in the arsenal as well)that being said - I recently purchased the e838 and feel like I have actually heard my true voice cutting through the mix for the first time. This German precision manufactured mic is a weighty, durably constructed piece of bling that absolutely makes me feel better about my vox and doesn't get bogged down beneath layers of guitaring. If anything I am having to lower the vocal mix I am accustomed to raising. Did I mention the sonic accuracy or that I will only purchase Sennheiser from this day forward? Or the fact that it looks like a diamond perched on top of my mic stand? All that and more! Don't cut the cost on your vocals- pay that little bit extra and indulge in rich, majestic, full bodied greatness. You won't believe the difference! (Also try the e935 for the best dynamic mic on the planet...)

  • Excellent Mic!

As reviewed by Allman Trower Hendrix Skynyrd on 11/27/2010

I bought this mic 2 years ago. My band plays loud, so I needed a mic that would cut through the mix. On occasion I will arrive at a gig where the sound engineer has the house mics already set up & ready to go. I have reluctantly had to use less powerful mics at times like SM58's, which don't come close. This mic always delivers! My vocals are always loud & clear. I highly recommend this mic to anyone who sings for a living.

  • Very Well Suited

As reviewed by Daniel Grubbs on 12/15/2013

As a self-recording artist, I decided to get a good, solid microphone that both had quality in the studio and could hold its own in a live setting. Also, it looks beautiful, and has an awesome feel. I've used this microphone to record my voice in several songs already, and the quality rivals that of my $500 Condenser Microphone. Secondly, in the Live Setting, it has been used to play in lue with bass, drums, two guitars and background voices, and it still comes through and gets it done right. I would recommend this to anyone. The only concerns I have are fairly basic. 1. You can't be too loud right up close to the mic. It overloads it. If you're going to sing loud, you have to be farther back from it. It can take more noise than your average mic, you just have to give the noise properly. 2. The Cardioid Pattern provides very good cancellation (Live Setting), but sometimes even the angle you hold the mic towards your mouth (45 degrees vs. say 80 degrees) can make a big difference. It takes some playing around with its pattern to get the best cancellation. For the amount you pay, this is a stellar deal. I would highly recommend it. As a Side Note: - The microphone comes with a protective case, but the case is just like a fanny pack. Light, and thin. May want to invest in something more substantial if you plan on bringing this to a lot of different events. - It also comes with a mic clip. I was unaware of this when I purchased this mic, so I bought another mic clip, which worked out well. Different stands have different widths of the attachment screws. The one with this mic is about 1/4". My equipment uses 1/2".
