  • Wow! That surprised me!

As reviewed by Denis on 3/3/2011

I had I pair of HD 280's for over a year(they are good for mixing too) and now decided to upgrade. To be honest, I didn't want to spend a hundred dollars more... But when I got it, I was so surprised! I was knocked off completely! They are very flat sound headphones. Very comfortable and so light. Comes with great thick protective case. Wow! I didn't know that a hundred bucks can make that huge difference. So, don't be greedy. Buy those instead!

  • Great for mixing/monitoring and general listening

You can read headphone reviews until you're blue in the face but you just won't know what's best for you until you actually audition several pair. Fortunately, Guitar Center has several top rated models in stock to choose from. So I headed over to my local store where the guys in accessories were nice enough to layout several models for me to audition. I brought an mp3 player with different types of music all sampled at 320kbs - high quality stuff - and spent 90 minutes listening to the following headphones. Here's how it went in listening order. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80 - I went in thinking that I was going to walk out with these headphones based on what I had read, and they did sound good but they were first up so I had no frame of reference. Sennheiser HD 380 PRO - WOW, these beat the Beyer's hands down though I did go back and forth between the two of them with several types of music. Audio Technica ATH-M50 - Nice form factor and the critics love'em, however, to me they sounded cheap: lacked clarity, accurate tonal timbre, and soundstage. I did come back to them again but was reminded of their inferior sound quality each time. AKG K240 Studio - These are nice and a real bargain. Had I not needed sound isolating headphones I may have purchased these and saved a hundred bucks. These were number two in sound quality for me. Sennheiser HD 25-1 II - Very nice. These clamp on the ear and offer outstanding sound isolation but they don't have the soundstage of the HD 380s. I think they're intended primarily for session recording, and for that they would be very good. KRK KNS-8400 Studio - Don't bother, even worse than the ATH-M50s. honorable mention: on my way out of the store I noticed the Shure SRH840 which are supposed to be good, but I didn't listen to them and I'm so happy with the Sennheisers I'm not worried about. IMPORTANT FEATURES: The Sennheisers fold flat and come with a great case. They also have a replaceable cable that plugs into the phones with standard 3.5mm jack.

  • Ok, I went for it.

As reviewed by George. on 1/19/2009

I kinda went over my budget and purchased these Headphone. There are a few things I think I should mention about them. 1- They are built better than most headsets out there. However, I took the extended warrantee because lets face it, these get the most handling and accidents out of most equipment. So cover yourself. 2- They are very comfortable. They ware well and don't loose that while in use for a long period of time. 3- They sound great. I would not put these up there to a WOW status but they cover a lot of territory when trying to hear things in a mix. HOWEVER, they are not too forgiving with vocal midrange. If the mids are in the mix, they will be right in your ear with these phones. So listening loud will produce a bit of discomfort. 4- Don't expect these to be the kinda Kick back and listen to you favorite CD's Headphones, because they are not that sweet. They are great but not the kinda thing where you sit back and fall into the music. The music will be right in your ear all the time. ( Right in you face if it were a TV ) I like them. I'm gonna keep them. They do what I wanted them to do, bring out the mix in the raw. For mixing vocals it realy brings the lead vocal right up front. But it does not make it bad, just lets you hear it where you seem to have put it. Hope that helps anyone.
