This is a fine mouthpiece for classical. It just doesn't have enough bite for me for jazz.

Comments about Selmer Paris Soloist Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

The one thing you have to do when buying any Selmer mouthpiece is make sure you really love it. A lot of people at my school buy this piece and don't honestly take time to review. Some are very bad but some are amazing. I bought a C** and it didn't have the tone I was expecting. I have played some very nice Soloists but remember that they are very inconstant. Be sure to utilize the return Policy! One thing about them is the rubber they use for these pieces is very very good.

Just what I was looking for, and on time

Comments about Selmer Paris Soloist Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

First, ordering through music123.com was quick and easy. My order arrived as promised, with no problems.

As for the Selmer Soloist mouthiece, this is a throw-back to the early Selmer mouthpieces of the 1950's-60's. When you look into the chamber, you see it has a more rounded entrance, than the S80 or other mouthpieces. THis aparently gives it a darker sound, which is more desirable for classical playing. I did find this to be the case. I found the mouthpiece very easy responding and very easy to control, sound and intonation. Of course, the right reed also makes a difference, so you have to try many. For the classical sound, I have found the french cut reeds best, and can recommend the Hemke reeds that Rico puts out. I tried their more expensive reeds, but they didn't have the response of the Hemke's. So if classical playing is your thing, and you don't have the Selmer Soloist, you owe it to yourself to get one.

      Beautiful Tone

      By person056

Comments about Selmer Paris Soloist Alto Saxophone Mouthpiece:

Honestly, I own the 70's version of this which is apparently either exactly the same or has infinitesemal differences. This mouthpiece does 2 things:

it sings in the upper octave through altissimo with a richly sweet tone
pulsates with an amazingly full and round, cello-like tone in the lower octave, especially low Bb to D.

Some people may think that this distinction isn't appropriate for symphonic work but when this mpc is the industry standard, you'll fit in with everyone else. regardless though, this mouthpiece plays incredibely well and sounds fantastic. it is very responsive and has an easily acheived wide dynamic range. also, the this mpc seems to really like Vandoren Traditional reeds. some players use 3.5s but i personally use 3's.

The reason i rate it less than 10 in the quality and value is that the 70's version can cost less and is higher quality rubber than that of today's standards. the problem is finding one in really good condition. luckily i found mine brand new from new old stock.
