The Fabulous Reference 54

By Inbred Jed

from Butte Montana

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

This is without doubt the finest instrument on the planet! I have played on Yamahas, and WoodWind (off brand) instruments and nothing comes close to the Selmer Paris. Tone, construction, and overall quality make this a bargain at any price! If you are a serious player you owe it to yourself to take your playing to a Whole nuther' level.

Best sax I ever played!

By Doron

from Haifa, Israel

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

Owned a Yanagisawa 991, which was a very good horn, but the Ref 54 is superior! Solid clear sound, excellent intonation and easy tp play mechanism make it the best sax I ever played! Had problems with sticky pads, but sax travelled to Paris France, was serviced and now it is just PERFECT!

Great Horn!!!

By Michael Jobe

from Interlochen and Tecumseh, Mi

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I tried this horn a few days ago and I was very sceptical about this horn. I've heard it was suppose to emmulate the mark IV. When I first played on it, I was sort of disapointed. I was also trying out different mouthpieces as well. The real beauty came out of this horn when I used a Guardala studio line. The horn became a beast. At first, I was like O MY GOD! This horn is great. With this setup up with a guardala, it has a Michael Brecker type of sound. I think all the great tenor players would agree that the reference 54 is just as good as the mark IV or better.

Superb tonal quality and excellent key work.

By Eddie-vENkW

from Mississippi

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

This tenor saxophone is a real piece of work. The key work is exactly the quality of a Selmer Mark VI. There is a Mark VI at the school that I am attending and it's tonal quality is wonderful, the best I've heard. I thought about buying it from the school, but unfortunately the VI require collaborative work every two or three months, and I cannot afford that kind of expense. I saw the Ref. 54 in a WWBW catalog and thought I'd try it. This sax is a Mark VI with a high F# key for all I'm concerned. The finish is beautiful and vintage. The only problem I am having is I can't quite flutter tongue the upper notes above the high E. It is a new Tenor and I do have some getting used to. All in all, wonderful sax, and the people at WWBW treated me real well on the ordering and servicing.

Beautiful, simply beautiful

By Allen Williams

from Rochester, NY USA

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I have only been playing for six, years, but even I can tell that I've got something good. The low end is beautiful and the high end is perfectly balanced. What I love most is you can wail as hard as you want without a problem.

Fantastic Horn

By Lukas

from N. Ca

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

This horn is incredibly in tune, easily as good as (if not better than) the Yamahas and Yanagisawa I've played as far as intonation is concerned. For me, the sound is very focused, not too broad, which I like. It has a very rich, warm timbre. I sound very dark on it (I've heard some players get a bright sound out of it, but I sure don't) and I'm able to get the high, light and pure sound that I like. Great complexity and depth of sound. Dynamically it is extremely responsive, as hard as I want to play it the sound quality doesn't distort at all, and it can really project or play very softly.More than any horn I've ever played, it speaks with the same voice over the entire range, at any dynamic and always so very in tune. What a dream.Biggest drawback - really low palm keys and somewhat awkward left hand pinky keys, especially if you've got small hands.

A Horn for the rest of My Life

By FitzyG

from Omaha, NE

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

After trying all other models, I finally was deciding between a Mark VI from Randy Jones of Tenor Madness, a 54, and a 36. I tried them all out. The 54 def. won out over the 36 for me (although I have buddies who like the 36 better). Between the 54 and 71XXX Mark VI, I like the action on the 54 better, but the tone slightly more on the VI. Nice thing about the 54 is the upkeep on it is much less than an older horn, and it's much more in tune. That, plus a good mouthpiece will affect your sound a LOT (not to mention a good sound from YOURSELF). I personally use an old Florida Supertone Otto Link 7* that was custom worked on, and this set up rocks. The sound rocks, the overtones are great, and I can play jazz, rock, funk, and classical on it (but my classical tone still isn't the great). A classical guitarist an my University (not the biggest fan of saxes) loves the low end of this thing, and loves the sound it makes. I love this horn, and it will be mine for the rest of my life. The only downside is no engraving (but you can get it custom done, check out www.dumarsengraving.com for a SWEEEET 54 engraving).

smooth as silk

By Rayzor

from Miami Beach

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I have been looking for a tenor to double on for sometime. The Reference 54 is sooo smooth sounding it just makes you want to play it more and more. I had to have it. The key action is super quick. The tone is consistent throughout and very easy to blow. Make sure to play test the one you will buy to ensure that the set up is right. I can see the day when the this tenor becomes my main horn.

Yeah, man...

By Lee-vY5rQ

from KY

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

HOLY SMOKES!!! With my Sugal Super Gonz II, this is the fattest, smokiest sound I've ever heard. I experimented with reeds and found that a med hard La Voz or Plasticover 3 gives me the sound I want. I also have a Berg Larsen 110/70 that gives me a slightly better fusion/r&b sound... but I can't imagine ANY mouthpiece would play badly with this sweet monster of a horn. Five stars, two thumsb up, and if I had three thumbs, I'd put three up.Fat low register, IN TUNE palm keys, free blowing, and a look that WILL turn heads. Case is a little heavy, so opt for a good flight case (SKB is what I prefer)

What a smooth sound!

By JoshP

from Delaware, OH

Comments about Selmer Paris Reference 54 Tenor Saxophone:

I just received my new Selmer 54 Model 74 today, & I am so impressed. The case it came in, though cloth, looks nice, is very sturdy, & easily portable with backstraps. When I opened the case, I was amazed at it's classy, antiqued appearance ... very sharp. I first played it with the classical C* mouthpiece that it came with, which found a little more open than most mouthpieces I've played, but I really liked the quality it gave to the sound. Next, I used a C** Selmer Jazz mouthpiece, which gave a clean, bright sound. Overall, it's very smooth, with easy playing high notes, & awesome lows. The closeness of the keys felt a little funny for this high school senior who's been previously working on an intermediate, but I quickly realized how much easier & cleaner my playing will soon be. I haven't even tuned it completely, but I'm so impressed with the sound. I think this is one of the best investments that will be made for my future.
