I have had my Seagull S6 since 1988, and it wasn't new then. I have had other more expensive acoustics and sold them or traded them, but the Seagull remains my primary acoustic. The S6 may be inexpensive and plain compared to the abalone-laden and pearl-encrusted offerings of other manufactured, but it has a sound that has audibly improved over the years until to my ears it easily rivals any Taylor, Martin, or Guild that I have played. That may sound like extravagant praise but I assure you that it isn't. The Seagull S6 is my go-to acoustic. The new ones are just as good as the old one. In its price range it outstrips any other make and it is frankly better, sonically, than many other more expensive guitars. Don't take my word for it. Try one for yourself. And notice: you don't see a lot of used Seagulls around. Mine's certainly not for sale.

best value

By Korm

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

After much research, decided on Seagull s6 guitar. Did not buy at guitar center, because they did not carry at the time. Paid 325.00. You can not get any guitar close to the quality and sound of this Canadian made guitar. It compares with many higher end guitars in sound. I found most accoustic guitars in the 300.00 range are made in china , korea, indonesia, and are basicly pretty generic. Does not make them bad, but also does not make them stand out like the seagull. One other guitar that stood out and i considered strongly was the takamine gs 330. Very, very nice sound, but once again i felt the quality was not a match for the seagull. For about 100.00 more (includes seagull case) i have a guitar that i can hand down over the course of time, and should easily maintain its value.

Seagull S6 GT

By BT

from Los Angeles

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I purchased my Seagull S6 GT over a year ago. This is my first guitar as I am a beginner. I tried out several other guitars in the $200 - $600 price range and this one was by far the best in terms of sound, craftsmanship, and playability and sounded as good as some of the higher priced guitars. This will be a guitar I will keep for a long time and not feel guilty about getting it banged around playing on camping trips etc. I'd recommend this guitar to any new beginner.

Seagull S6 Acoustic Guitar

By Matthijs94

from Houston, TX

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I was looking for a good sounding guitar in the $200-$600 price range, and tried a Taylor Big Baby and several other guitars. This guitar beat the Big Baby by far; it has much warmer and clearer sound. This guitar is great sounding and for a very good value. If you are looking for a very deep sounding guitar, don't buy this. It is not too warm, the bass comes out just right actually, nice and loud. I recommend this to any beginner, but also to longer playing people.

Still great after 10 years

By Mike H

from Flint, MI / Cincinnati, OH

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

My S6 is was purchased in 1997 so it will be 10 years old in July. It has remained a consistent play with a slightly brighter sound than when new. I guess it is due to the wood aging but I am no acoustics expert. I would recommend this guitar over the similarly priced Korean and Chinese offerings.

Excellent Guitar

By L.M.

from Greenville, SC

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

There are many reasons to buy this guitar. First and foremost, it's probably the best sounding guitar under $600. The cedar top gives it a very nice sound. Second, it is made in Canada rather than overseas like most brands. Even the lower end Taylors and Martins are made in Mexico. Made in Canada means good quality... for instance I've found that it holds up well to heavy strumming without buzzing. Third, the wide nut and shorter scale length mean easier playability since the strings are father apart and take less force to push down. Fourth, the guitar looks great... wild cherry back and sides and natural finish. Finally, the guitar has good volume. I can't really think of a disadvantage... unless pride in your guitar is something you want to avoid. I've talked to multiple friends who know alot about guitars and all of them seemed favorable to Seagull brand. I think this guitar gets overlooked alot by people shopping just for brand name. Seagull is part of Godin, which is better known. I ordered the guitar from Guitar Center and had it shipped to my house. No issues... arrived in good condition within 4 days. I don't usually write reviews because I am too busy between work, family, and having fun, but I am just so pleased that I wanted to share.

Absolutely beautiful. Asthetically as well as tonally.

By flylikeicarus

from Hillsdale, NJ

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I've had this guitar for about two and a half weeks now, and it has done nothing but amaze me. I remember hearing about it from a few sources awhile ago, but I didn't think much about it until I arrived at my local Guitar Center. I originally had my mind set on a Martin 000cx1e, however, upon picking up and playing the Seagull, I knew it was for me. This guitar has a surprisingly rich and warm tone that is almost comparable to higher end Martins and Taylors. The wild cherry back and sides make it unique and very pleasing to the eye. Unfortunately, this guitar is much too underrated. For its price, it is an amazing deal, and even aside from the money, I would still highly recommend it to players of any level who want a new acoustic guitar that truly does its job.

Great value, sound

By Matt

from Hebron, CT

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I've had my S6 since they were introduced. For the money, it is one of the best sounding acoustic guitars I've played. The solid cedar top vibrates freely and offers a full, rich sound. The silverleaf maple neck is comfortable and offers great clarity and sustain. The laminated wild cherry sides and back sound a lot like mahogany, but without the volume. Be very aware that cedar tops need more care than spruce, which has a tighter grain. The cedar MUST be humidified and does not store well. After spending some time in the case (I had forgotten to refill the humidor), I took out my S6 and started to tune it. A horrible crack later and the top had ripped a large square around the bridge and sound hole. It is not repairable without replacing the entire top. :-(

Love everything about it

By Sheila Rodriguez

from Chicago, Illinois

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I got my Seagull S6 Original from my parents for Christmas this year and I couldn't be happier with it. Although relatively inexpensive, this guitar has amazed me with everything from its tonal quality to the simple yet elegant look it possessed. This guitar also projects sound really well. I seriously haven't been able to put it down. At first, I was slightly nervous when I chose the guitar because I chose it strictly based off of the online information and the comments/reviews on it. But now, there are no doubts in my mind that I made the right choice for me. I love everything about this guitar.

Seagull S6

By Fadi

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I wanted to find a guitar that was well made and at an affordable price, so after some research I found the Seagull. I played around with the S6 and the Entourage mini jumbo, I liked both a lot but I found the S6 to have a fuller sound and I bought it. Itۡs been a week and I love the feel and sound of it I recommend it to anyone who wants a quality guitar at an affordable price.

Luv it.

By Andy

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

From the moment I first strummed it I was blown away. Loud but balanced, amazing acoustic. A few minutes with it in the store, and I was hooked. Bought it, took it home, and have not regretted the purchase for one second. It does not have a heavy lacquer finish, so it does not physically shine like most acoustics, but it's sound blows them away.

Outstanding Value and an Outstanding Guitar

By Dave

from Houston, TX

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

This was my first guitar after years of playing the piano. I did a lot of research before deciding which guitar to get and everything pointed towards the Seagull S6 as the best starter instrument. As I have quickly learned, there is a reason that this guitar has gotten such high acclaim. I played several other guitars in this price range and the Seagull easily had the best tone. The craftsmanship is superb and the overall feel of the guitar is outstanding. As far as looks are concerned, it might seem a little plain to some (it doesn't have pearl inlays or anything of that sort), but I actually find the slightly darker wood of the solid cedar top to look really nice. Every time I go to the guitar store and play some of the other acoustics I worry that I'll eventually play one that I like better than my Seagull, but every time I come away happy with my decision. Maybe someday I'll spend thousands of dollars on a top-end guitar, but I doubt it - this will probably be the only acoustic guitar I ever own. I can't recommend it highly enough.

True craftsmanship can be had at an affordable price!

By Tim

from Mishawaka, IN

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

As with most looking to buy a new guitar, you usually make many trips to your local music shop, to find that "one". I had always heard good, no great, things about Seagull acoustics. But honestly never really gave them a shot. My budget was around $400. But that wasn't in my mind when I choosing the guitar, because I wasn't going to settle for something that I felt was just "okay". The Yamaha's just didn't sound full nor loud enough for me. Some of the Epiphone's were "okay" but seemed overpriced, like the Epi Hummingbird. A lot of the acoustics in this price range looked good cosmetically but lacked good definition, resonance, and tone. Their sound being dulled by a thick poly finish and sub par bracing. With their Gibson styled creme binding and thin sound. I kept wondering if there is hope. Then I picked up the Seagull S6 original, and immediately knew this guitar was different from the others. It projected the tone similar to me of that of a guitar 2-3 times the price. The solid cedar top sounded flawless. It has a crisp clean resonance that echoes throughout with the longest sustain I have heard in a guitar. Everything little detail is heard, great for finger picking. The wide nut width felt good to my finger tips. A thing I must add is that sure the S6 demo sounded good, but after I got home and tuned up my brand new one out of the box. I was actually speechless. Probably due to the new strings, mine at home sounded so much better. The guitar is also very loud. The cedar top has a balanced yet mellow tone to it, and still lets the highs cut through and shine. I am enjoying the solid cedar top and someday, when I get a Martin, I will then own a spruce top as well. I actually was up for hours wondering how they could pull off this guitar for the price. And I was so happy that I did not settle for an asian made guitar for around the same amount of money. This was made in Canada by Godin guitars. It was properly set up, and even comes from Godin with a TUSQ nut. The satin finish was flawless and the grain on the wood was astounding for this price. It was a work of art, true craftsmanship can be had even today, and not cost you $2,000. These guys definitely take what they do seriously and are good at it. Mine came with a red tortoise shell pick guard that I think looks great on the S6. Proper paperwork, inspection check list, booklet containing helpful information on caring for the guitar and a truss rod wrench. I highly recommend this guitar, and at this price, I even recommend it to entry level players.

Best acoustic out there for the money

By Randy

from United States

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned this guitar for over 3 years. I had a professional setup done and it has been great ever since. The amazing thing about this guitar is that as it ages it also increases in volume and sound quality. After buying this one I also bought a Seagull Artist Studio model which is much more expensive, and yes better looking, but the S-6 has a better feel, and is easier to play. The Artist Studio has not started to age yet with the Spruce top which ages slower than the Cedar top on the S-6. I'm hopeful that some day I'll be as impressed with the sound and playability of the Studio as I am with the S-6. The Studio is a beautiful guitar with its Rosewood back and sides. I just dont think you can find a better guitar for the price than the S-6.

Beyond Compare

By Student

from NY

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I have been playing violins for quite a while now and, like guitars, they need to be specifically made and almost certainly handmade otherwise they will be out of tune and sound "plastic." This is THE best acoustic guitar and is made with the customer in mind. Rather than "green" wood which has been machine pressed from countries like China (though not all), this guitar is not. It is perfect for beginners because they will be recognizing a quality sound sooner rather than later. The sound quality will also increase as the wood ages.

Very Solid

By Nick in Houston

from Houston, TX

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I had this guitar for a little over a year now, and I am quite happy with it. I am not going to make outrageous claims like this guitar sounds as good as a Taylor or anything, but this is a solid and quality guitar. The guitar doesn't sound as bright as spurce tops but it sounds very full and mellow. As for playability, it wasn't really great out of the box. I took the guitar in for a set up and it plays much better now. At first, the neck felt a little too wide and took some getting used to. The nut is about a tenth of an inch wider than most acoustic guitars. If you prefer a more traditional neck go with the S6 slim. Finally, the most amazing thing about this guitar is that it stays in tune forever. This is not the prettiest guitar out there, but if you want an inexpensive quality guitar check out the S6.

Such an Awesome Guitar!

By So-Cal-Guitarist

from So Cal

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Well, I haven't had this guitar for too long, but I've had it long enough to know for a fact that this guitar absolutely ROCKS and the price is just great for such quality. The strings it comes with are phenomenal as well; I haven't had tuning issues for the past few days. What I mean, is they stay tuned -very- well. The wood is excellent as well. The sound is very clear and clean, 'pristine' I suppose you could call it. Also, I don't think the wood is laminated from what I can tell (I've been told by a very reliable guitarist that laminating the wood takes away from the sound quality). The only thing I kind-of-sort-of didn't like about it is the design of the headstock. ...But, that design just makes it more original and I've already grown to appreciate it. Overall, I would definitely recommend this guitar for anyone, at any playing level, for any type of acoustic music (so long as you don't need amplification, since this doesn't have a port for an amp, which isn't a problem for me though).
