I've been learning to play guitar on an electric for a few months. I was eventually bitten by the acoustic bug and really wanted one to learn to play songs via fingerpicking. There are lots of options in this price range, but I couldn't find anything that matched the quality of construction or sound of the Seagull S6(I'm new so take my opinion of sound with a grain of salt).

I went to a few stores and tried Yamaha, Takamine, and even one of the Martin 000 models in this price range. The Martin looked and sounded very good, but the neck was made from some laminate called Stratabond and I wanted more solid woods in my guitar. The Seagull still sounded better and definitely had more volume when I compared them back to back. The dreadnought size really contributes to the volume as expected, but you can fingerpick without nails or picks and get a nice loud sound, but if you strum this thing really makes some noise.

The other reviews are accurate. The quality of craftsmanship is top notch. My S6 arrived quickly with no defects or blemishes. Once tuned it sounded great. The only problem I had was it felt like I needed to press down REALLY hard to make the notes ring clear. After a month of struggle I had a professional look at it. He adjusted the truss rod and now it plays so much better. Other people may not need any fine tuning but this was all it took to make my playing much more comfortable. I was prepared to pay for a full setup anyway, but the minor adjustment was a nice surprise.

As for finding the right case you may have to look around as this dreadnought size is a little deeper than others. I initially tried the Gator Delux ABS Dreadought case but it wouldn't shut completely without putting too much pressure on the bridge/saddle. Oddly enough the cheaper Gator GL-Dread Lightweight Dreadnought case is a snug but safe fit. I've also been using The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking by Mark Hanson to learn. It has been very helpful and after only a month I've learned quite a bit.

Side note: some pictures online show the Seagull S6 as having a black pickguard. As of Sept. 2012 the one I received had a tortoise shell pickguard. I included a picture to show the difference. Looks sharp.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

This is currently my sixth acoustic guitar in the collection. I had it professionally set up for light strings and it plays beautifully. You just can't beat the tone for this price. Well balanced, nice bottom and mid-range with sparkling highs that project a quality sound I just didn't expect at this level. Super guitar for a beginner or any level player. Very simple aesthetics, but great quality construction and tone woods. 3-layer laminate cherry back and sides with a cedar top turned out to be a real winner. Some might prefer the spruce top option, but I wouldn't vary from this formula. Been playing acoustics for over 50 years and this is definitely a keeper.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

Needed a new beater to replace my beloved Sigma. After 33 years the old girl earned it's semi-retirement. The S6 is new, but had some dings in the top from being out on the floor (cedar's like that). That took about $50 off it. Full, balanced tone with a nice low end. Need to shave a bit off the bridge, but no big deal. Quite playable action, just a tad on the high side. I like the slightly wider nut width, too (1.8"). Very comfortable. Can't beat it for the money if you want a nut wider than 1 11/16". And believe me, I tried. Don't love the headstock shape but I bought it to play, not stare at.

          Great feeling neck.

Great sound, possibly a little bright but not tinny. The sounds of the individual strings is sharp when strummed. Nice!

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I have owned this guitar for about a year now. As others have said, it is not flashy or laden with different features. It is not cutaway, and is not very playable at the higher frets. But it is well built, reliable, and has an excellent tone.

The only 'drawback' of this guitar is that it is very prone to superficial damage: scratches, dings, small dents that do not affect sound or playability. Be prepared to ding yours.

I am a violinist who has owned my current violin for about 10 years. My violin has accumulated some damage over time (wear and tear). But it still sounds wonderful and I have no doubt that it will last for decades to come. This is very typical of good violins and orchestral instruments. But in the mid-low price guitar world there are a lot of cheap tricks out there posing as nice guitars. This is not one of them.

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I procured my S6 in 1999! Back before they were really in the "forefront" of the industry I suppose. Older model with the L.R. Baggs onboard electrical stuff. She's always been a wonderful instrument and as time goes on... well some things improve with age and this is certainly one of them. Tone, playability... STABILITY (at this age it's like a ROCK!). The tuners are still smooth as glass and the action is nearly electric like. Though as I recall, i did a bit of setup on it when I originally purchased it's been so long I can' remember exactly what I did... but I do recall that the truss rod is singularly one of the most functional I've ever come across on ANY guitar. If they're still making them now the way they did in 1999 you will not at all be diappointed!

Comments about Seagull The Original S6 Acoustic Guitar:

I've always wanted to learn to play guitar, so a few years ago I bought the cheapest one I could find just to get a feel for it. Needless to say it was very difficult to play - definitely not something I enjoyed. But I'm no quitter! I kept reading reviews online that instrument quality really has an effect on beginner success, so I decided I wanted a better guitar for Christmas this past year.

The Seagull not only looks good, but it is also very lightweight and just feels good (and smells good, but now we're getting a little weird). I like that it is different from everything else out there, as far as styling.

As a beginner, I'm not much into the finer points in terms of how it sounds... it is loud enough and sounds like a guitar, so...?

I've had it for a few months now, and I've learned so much more on it in that short time than in the years I had the cheap one. I wish I'd started with the S6!
