Compound Curve Top Design

The guitar top is the part of the instrument that most affects the sound. It is also the most delicate part of any high-quality acoustic guitar. The grade and thickness of the wood used (solid spruce), as well as the bracing structure, have a huge impact on the instrument's sound. The idea of applying an arch or a curve to the top is appealing because the added strength of an arched top should allow for the use of a thinner and more lightly braced top. While this is true, there remains a trade-off in applying a curve to the entire top. The most active part of the top is the area centered on the bridge. Applying a curve to this part of the top restricts movement resulting in a loss of dynamic range. On the other hand, the area of the top above the sound hole moves minimally but is problematic because it tends to sink if the guitar dries out even slightly. This tendency is also encouraged by downward pressure from the fingerboard resting on top of it. The solution is a top that has a compound curve.

In the Seagull Performer's design the top is arched slightly in the area above the sound hole and levels out in the area around the bridge. The compound curve top produces excellent stability in the upper part of the guitar top and the power and projection made possible by leaving the top flat below the sound hole flat. With the weak area above the sound hole stabilized, it is possible to make the rest of the top even more active with a bracing design that allows unprecedented control over the top vibration. The bracing for the Seagull Performer Cutaway QI guitar is quarter-sawn spruce, scalloped and carved to conform exactly to the curvature of the tops.

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have always liked the sound of this guitar and have compared to Martins and Gibsons of the same class. I use Martin extra-light strings and the sound is absolutely beautiful; it sings.

However, one of the drawbacks is the electronics, the tuner has never worked well and customer service is not very helpful. First the gold plate started to tarnish after the first month. I sent an email and was told that the Q1 electronics is no longer supported. So I have a tuner on the guitar and a clip on.

Second issue is the action. My guitar shop has adjusted several times to reduce the space between the fret board and the strings but with the high frets it makes the adjustment a nightmare.

Finally. when you have high have lots of buzzing. One of the issues that Zager and Martin's guitars have been working on for years.

It is not s bad go-to guitar but for what issues I have with this guitar, I could not recommend this guitar.

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

After much research, we settled on this guitar for several reasons. I wanted a guitar around 800 that my daughter, who is turning 14 soon, could take to college and still have a great instrument. I love the fact that it is crafted with care, we even got a paper with parts listed, and the signatures of the people who checked them. My daughter loves it and her teacher is very impressed with it as well. I keep hearing great for the money, which is true, but it is also just a great guitar. The folk size is also perfect for her.

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is the 1st of 2 Seagull guitars in my collection. I bought the performer model used and it needed to be set up by a professional guitar tech before I would play it live. With a few small adjustments it plays remarkably well. While the Performer Folk was in the repair shop, I bought a 2nd Seagull; a Natural Elements as a back-up. To be clear, the adjustments I had done were due to the fact that it had been stored without proper humidity not because there was a design issue. Brand new, the performer plays well without any special adjustment.

I like so many things about this guitar and now that I've had a chance to compare it to the Natural Elements model I can see the differences quite clearly. I bought the Seagull Performer from an online classified but beforehand I visited a specialty guitar shop in Toronto to try out as many guitars as I could. It held its own against Martins, Takamines, Art Lutherie (Canadian brand), Norman guitars and all of the others. While it doesn't have the deep tones of a Martin, it has a beautiful, full mid-range tone - perfect for singing along with. As I was buying this guitar to play in my solo act, it seemed perfect. I have not been disappointed.

One notable difference between the Seagull Performer series and my other guitar, a Seagull Natural Elements is the quality of the electronics. They are night and day different. The Performer includes 2 tone controls (treble and bass) plus a tuner. The Natural Elements tuner is next to useless but the Performer's is quite sensitive and accurate enough for casual gigs.

The lightweight body and thinner neck on both models makes them perfect for women with their smaller hands and shorter arms. I have no trouble reaching over the body to play and I can see the fretboard when I need to. Plugged in there is enough control to attain a nice tone assuming that you have a reasonably professional amp. I use light strings and a light, flexible pick to get the best tone. It can sound vastly different if those two things are changed.

I have become a fan of the Seagull Brand and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I must give high praise to the 51st state, Canada, and Seagull for this beauty! Great quality and craftsmanship, absolutely beautiful piece of craftsmanship! Perfect size, not too small to impact sound quality, just the right size to play comfortably. Did I mention the craftsmanship? Unbelievable to get this quality for this price?!! I put this quality up against any Martin or Taylor for twice the price!

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Awesome sonic mid range response I was looking for...I have a Taylor 410ce dreadnought I was looking for an alternate guitar for performance and in my studio.... This was it, the neck is a dream, real pretty to. I wasn't about to spend another 2 grand on a guitar and I didn't wanna waste my money on a cheap Ibanaz or Yamaha... they dont even come close.

Crystal Clear, Great Build Quality

By Sullavin

from Ontario

Comments about Seagull Performer Cutaway Folk QI Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is my first acoustic guitar, I couldn't have gotten a better one for what it is. The build quality is excellent, the maple feels really nice to the touch and is quite light, but not too light at the same time. My only complaint is possibly the tuner, I don't know if its just me, but it doesn't seem to be working with me, which is fine because I can tune it using another method.
