I have had this guitar for almost five years and in that time i have added a martin, taylor 210, gibson hummingbird pro,and a breedelove. But i want to tell you if you want a great playing and great sounding guitar get this maritime. in some ways it out shines all that i have
i was in GC getting strings and was taking the quick obligatory walk about the guitar room when i saw the seagull cutaway dread on the wall at eye level. i'd recently read a couple of things about the wider neck which i'd been missing since getting rid of an older low end classical....long story short - played it, was amazed at how it played and sounded, left the store determined not to do an impulse buy but could NOT get that guitar out of my head, went back and bought it a couple of days later trading some stuff in that i wasn't hardly playing... The thing i realized though given the styles that i like to play- finger style plus classical - is that the seagull wider neck 'dread' guitar( if you like that) can really take the place of several guitars... then i looked at their artist series and decided to spend a bit more(almost 2x) and exchanged for the Artist Studio cutaway with rosewood sides (which my ears prefer- even though i really liked the clarity and 'woodiness' of the mahogany). The SWS series also has a rosewood model but for some bizarre reason you can only get that one at a narrower width... somto get rosewood sides and the wider neck i had to opt upwards. Still the value is amazing comparing the artist series with other big 'brands' ... you know the ones. The only i wish is that GC would have some of the higher end seagulls on display to try. Seagull makes them to order and people just gush over the quality and sound. i'll write a review of that one after i get it!!! honestly if i hadn't had the budget and desire to go to the wider neck rosewood i would have been thrilled to keep the sws with mahogany because it played like a dream!!!!
I've had this guitar for over a year now and love it! I agree with the other reviews completely. The neck is wider than comparable Martins but I like it. I have the cutaway version that I bought from Guitar Center and it is really easy to play. The only thing I didn't like is the action but I just lowered that and now it is really comfortable to play. If you don't want to spend a ton of money I definitely recommend this it has a great full sound!
I got this guitar about a year ago, and haven't been disappointed at all. First, the wider nut width is great if you have medium to wide fingers, although it takes a day or two to get used to it. The "Soft C" neck shape is very comfortable, similar to fender's "Modern C" shaped neck. The piezo pickup sounds a little harsh, but that's pretty typical of most piezos and can usually be fixed at the amp. The onboard tuner is AWESOME, especially if you use alternate tunings. The body is one of the most comfortable dreadnaughts to hold, and the sound is a little less boomy and a little more defined than most. I definitely recommend trying different strings to see what works best for you. P.S. Mine is a cutaway version. it's not listed on the site, but you might find it in-store.
I picked this guitar up several weeks ago. GREAT sound, perfect action (for my playing style), and beautiful Solid Wood: Honduras Mahogany back/sides, a solid sitka spruce top w/ a cutaway body. PLUS, ecxcellent Gogin electronics! I've owned many guitars, and for the price...this is comparable to all Gibson and higher end guitars for half the price!! You'll LOVE this guitar.
