Another strong case of "You get what you pay for"

  • It's better than nothing, maybe.

  • High spots on the frets
  • Very difficult to tune (and keep in tune)
  • Very poorly made, very cheap wood

Best Uses

Comments about Savannah SA090-TSN A Model Mandolin:

I've played the mandolin for years, and I've tried many different grades/tiers/quality levels. I bought this for fun, just to keep another mandolin around but in a different tuning or with different string types/sizes. Yeah, no go.

Mandolins are notoriously fussy about tuning, what with having 8 strings tuned to four notes. Good tuning keys and a properly filed nut are imperative to maintaining tuning. This instrument, due to the cheap production factors, simply does not hold tune well. The tuning keys have a very poor turn ratio, meaning it's difficult to fine tune. The mandolin is all about fine tuning, so this is a loss from the start. The nut and bridge are hastily filed, expect your strings to "catch" in the nut when you tune. This happened plenty on this mandolin.

Once I finally got it in tune, it didn't sound bad on it's own. I did, however, sound bad for a mandolin. It plays in the correct pitch, but the tone just isn't there. And to be fair, it won't be in this price range. We're not talking about a graduated, solid wood instrument here. We're dealing with a product which was produced by the lowest bidder.

Intonation is key to an instrument getting and staying in tune. It is important to note that this mandolin isn't properly designed to compensate for intonation perfectly. Even when in tune, you will need to be prepared to sound out of tune on some frets. This is just a thing that happens with cheaply made mandolins.

After getting it in tune and setting the action, there were still some frets that just wouldn't play sound out. This is because the frets are hastily glued in and receive practically no proper leveling. I played three of these mandolins in total, and they all had this issue. You can get the notes to sound out by raising the action, but by the time all the notes sound out, it's unplayably high. Your hands would cramp up immediately if you were a beginner.

A "good" mandolin starts around the $200-250 range. Look at Gretsch!

good sound, tuning pegs are extremely hard to turn. I needed to use two hands to turn some of the pegs.

Pick it up in the store

Comments about Savannah SA090-TSN A Model Mandolin:

The problem: The strings wouldn't tune... They were poor strings to begin with, and finally! when I got down to the last untuned string I gave it 3/4 of a turn and the string snapped. No problem!! I was able to repair it real quick and adjust the tune.... But then! an hour later, the string snapped completely.

I contacted on-line support, never doing that again. The fella "Joseph" didn't seem interested in any of my questions, just referred me to my "closest" store. Which if it was that convenient to begin with, I would have purchased it in the store.. Joseph seemed more interested in disconnecting with me since there were just a few short minutes left in his shift..

Down side, I travel all the way to my closest store in Visalia California. And they're repair dude was off all week and wouldn't be back till Monday. So I asked the fella if I could drop it off, have it re-strung and have the "repair dude" check the neck and bridge because the wood was cracking. NOPE....

Long story short, I paid the $7.00 for new strings.. Strung it, sounds decent but there is something definitely wrong with the bridge. For the price, it's not worth it unless you can access it in a store to make sure all is well versus opening a box that I am certain was dropped kicked into a cargo bay of an airplane, airdropped at my local UPS store only to be swiftly delivered to me by a dude in brown shorts in the dead of winter under a time crunch..

Love it!

I am using this for fun to learn the mandolin! It is well made, especially for the price, and great to look at! I picked it because it was the cheapest one in store, but it really is great.
