Samson's Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller was designed to make musical performance and production accessible to everyone. For seasoned musicians and young creators alike, the Carbon 49 offers versatile, yet easy-to-use features in a compact, lightweight controller that's well-suited both stage use and in the studio. It offers you a semi-weighted keyboard comparable in feel to that of pro-level instruments. Its 49 velocity-sensitive keys allow you to accurately capture the full dynamics of a performance. In addition, the Carbon 49's dedicated Transpose and Octave buttons, as well as its classic Pitch Bend and Modulation wheels, allow you to expand the keyboard and enhance your overall musical expression.
Take control of your music software with the Carbon 49's assignable data encoder and volume slider. For easy editing, players can use the Shift key to adjust up to 14 performance-related control parameters. Also, the Carbon 49's 3-digit, 7-segment LCD displays the behavior of every function in real time. For added versatility, the Carbon 49 includes traditional MIDI Out, sustain pedal input and USB connections.
Staying hip with today's popular and convenient technology, the Carbon 49 features an integrated iPad stand and can be used with your favorite MIDI apps via Apple's Camera Connection Kit. The Carbon 49 can even be directly powered by the iPad.
In addition, it's bundled with Native Instrument's KOMPLETE ELEMENTS software, which offers a vast range of instruments and effects for modern music production, composition and sound design for your desktop Mac OS X or Windows.

Just wanted to follow up on our previous review. To clarify; the sharp edge is the key's under-side, noticeable at the front edge and corners. Personally I didn't notice the issue until I stretched to play an octave (or more) with one hand. Then the inside of my thumb and pinky fingers rubbed against the sharp underside of the adjacent keys. So if you're an experienced player who plays at the front edge of the keys to maximize your reach and minimize unintentional notes this may not be the keyboard for you. Otherwise it may be fine. We ended up getting an M-Audio Oxygen 49. It works great with the iPad 2 (w/ camera connection kit) and the Mac Book Pro. I don't know if I can include links but here's a pic from pianoworld.com that demonstrates the reach: http://bit.ly/XOB4Yb
This keyboard arrived today and my wife's first impression is that the front edges of the keys are ridiculously sharp. Literally scraping skin off her thumbs as she played her first few notes. She wondered: "Did anyone try to play this keyboard after they manufactured it?" She'll give it another 1/2 hour but then we'll likely swap it out for another.
I needed something lightweight, powered by the ipad, and 49 keys so I can practice and produce on the go, but didn't want to be limited to my 25 key oxygen (which requires a wall wart) nor my 88 key (too big for portable). This was a great solution, and the built in ipad holder works. The only thing I don't like are the keys are a bit stiff.
