I was in the market for a new crash and had decided that I was going to get the sound I want, regardless of brand (Zildjan was my current). I walked into the Cymbal room at my Guitar Center, with a stick and, without looking, hit each cymbal as I walked past it until one particular cymbal stopped me dead in my tracks! It was the HHX Evolution. I bought a 16" to replace the cracked Zildjan Dark Crash and fell in love with this cymbal's presence and it's laser-bright ability to cut through the din. That was 6 years ago. I've since replaced my other crashes with HHX's and just said goodbye to my old pal 16", a few weeks ago, when it finally suffered a hairline crack on the edge, after 6 years of whaling and riding on it. From lightest touch to droping a-bomb crashes, this baby really puts out! Get one!
I have both the 17" and 18" and I really like how they sound.I have the 18" paired with my 18" AAX Xplosion Fast Crash and they sound great together. The 18" Evolution is just a bit darker then the Xplosion.the price is steep, but worth it for the sound.I think the Evolution line of cymbals all sound great.I have the 14" China and 14" Hats and will never part with them.
my drum teacher recommended this to me, and i love it. it is the perfect sound for me.
I've started out with Sabian B8s and replaced most with Paiste Alphas but then I decided I was ready to move on from the stiff cuts of metal. I bought the 18" crash and it has EXACTLY the sound I've been looking for. The stick literally sinks into it and produces such a rich, shimmering, warm and dark tone with enough power and sustainability to cut through all instruments, and it fits in with every genre on any occasion. In short, the HHX Evolution series was "naturally selected" by me.
I got this cymbal from guitar center about a year ago, and it still sounds mint. Its got a nice washy sound and can get really loud. Its a clean sound that's good for any type of music that will really soothe the crowd. I just wish i had the money to get the full hhx evolution packet, that's how much i fell in love with these cymbals
This cymbal is just a must have on a kit. If you can afford it make it yours! The cymbal is very sensitive and even by tapping it with a finger in responds very nicely. I own the 18inch Evo and I have it to the right of my 18inch AAX Fast Crash, they make a great pair. The cymbal did crack in a month before the year but good thing I had the warranty.
This is probably the best crash cymbal i've ever used or heard in my entire life. Very Pricey, but well worth it if you play drums. Shimmery tone with a lot of dark trashiness as well. It seems to cut through the wall of guitars but not over-power it, just blend in extremely. This cymbal is also very dynamic, touch it gently for a small accent or touch it a bit harder for a full wash. Overall great cymbal!!!
I recently purchased both the 16 and 18in evolution series cymbals and I am extreamly pleased with both. I normally use the HH series but decided to see how the HHX would blend it. I was amazed at the overall quality of tones and the projection was awesome. I have to hold back a little as not to overproject on certain segments of songs. If you are looking for great sound and good looks all in one package, these are the cymbals to buy.
The cymbals simply melt as you hit them, letting out an unearthly echo of dark, shimmery wash that immediately cuts through the music before settling into a musical blend of overtones. The most impressive feature about the series is how trashy they sound while still maintaining a musicality about them, and the cymbals "open up" with the slightest touch of your stick, further adding to their musicality. Both my 18 and 19 crashes ride extremely well and neither show hardly any signs of wear and tear despite the constant abuse I put them through. The only thing to consider before buying is the price-tag, which is steep considering Sabian is usually pretty price conscious. However, if they're in your price range then I highly recommend them.
