Super Trash China Crash

By Jay

from Lubbock, TX

Comments about Sabian Carmine Appice Devastation Chinese Cymbal:

Before, I played a B8 PRO 18 china. It sounded fine, but it cracked after about a year. I guess the Sabian B8 Pro formula changed, because I bought a replacement and it sounded awful. I tried a couple out, looking for the trashiest china Sabian made. Money wasn't an issue (I ended up spending way less than I had planned), I just wanted trash! After trying out several cymbals and talking to a few drummers I knew, they pointed me towards the Carmine Appice Sig China. I read the description of the Sig Carmen Appice Devastation China. I thought I should give it a try since Sabian usually does a fine job with their descriptions. Needless to say, I bought it and love it. I've been playing the 19 incher for about 5 years now and it is SUPER trashy. The attack is immediate, the tones are a perfect mix of lows, mids, and highs, but I wondered about it's ability to project and cut through the din. That lasted about 5 minutes after my band's first practice after I bought it. It certainly has enough high end to be heard in both unmiked situations and in lightly miked clubs. As for recording, I was very surprised how organic it sounded; both times I've been into the studio with it. Yes, because of the silver content, it is has a bright quality when gently struck, but in general, it responds to the dynamics of the drummer's playing, be it heavy or softer. In short, after my experience with this cymbal has shown me it is very versatile. For me, this is a perfect cymbal for what I play and was the exact sound I was looking for. I mentioned it accents very well, but I am extremely pleased with it's riding ability in funky/thrash or just general hard rock situations. As I mentioned, I've been playing this cymbal for over 5 years and while its age can be seen, there are no cracks to mention and it is still going strong (knock on wood since I've been known to crack cymbals from time to time:). I love this cymbal, but for some reason, not many pros, that I am aware of anyway, have chosen to use it. Regardless, I love it and am sticking with it! Be unique and try it out! This is the trashiest china Sabian makes (that I am aware of)!
