I NEVER leave product reviews... I always read them before I make any purchase, but this time I feel that a review is my duty to my fellow drummers out there looking for THE cymbal. I have been playing drums for nearly 25 years. I've toured all over the US. I've had endorsements through several great companies throughout my career. I have done and still do a lot of studio work in world renowned studios. I currently play as a session drummer in the Houston area and also play for one of the largest churches in the country. I'm not at all trying to brag, I'm simply qualifying myself as a drummer who knows drums and knows what sounds good and what doesn't...
Here's the deal... This cymbal (Omni 22") is literally THE best cymbal I have ever played hands down. I have actually taken this cymbal to quite a few smaller gigs and used only this cymbal and hi hats and didn't miss my other cymbals at all.. It is literally the perfect ride and the perfect crash. I've used it for pop/rock/country/gospel/... It always works and fits in perfectly. It is never overpowering and the sound guys and producers always say "where in the hell did you find that cymbal!!). I hit it and it makes me smile. The bell is cutting, but not too bright, the center has a dark, jazzy ride feel with amazing stick definition, the edge is trashy, yet beautiful. I could literally go on and on about this thing, Most crash/rides end up being horrible at both... This isn't your ordinary crash/ride. It's just an awesome freaking cymbal. Sabian and JoJo definitely struck gold with this one! I now own two of these and if they break, I will order another one immediately! Each cymbal differs a bit. One of my Omni's is a bit heavier, and is a bit brighter than the other. However, they are both brilliantly designed instruments! I'm not anyone to please go out and buy this cymbal, BUT I am saying this is has literally changed my playing for the better. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT 1000%!!!

I was intrigued by the just the idea of the OMNI when I first saw an ad in Modern Drummer last year. It looked so cool and seemed to promise the world. Months go by, and I finally get one of my very own. This cymbal is incredible. It covers such a wide variety of tones and playing styles. However, it's just not a good fit for most drummers. The OMNI is not a cymbal that one can just throw into an existing set-up and expect it to blend well. My hope was to add it into my burgeoning fusion set-up (13" HH Fusion Hats, 12" AAX Mini Chinese, 16" AA Bright Crash, and 8" & 10" AAX Splashes) and eliminate the need of having separate right-side crash and ride cymbals. Despite being paired with the Bright Crash on the left, the crashing surface of the OMNI was far too bright and trashy. By comparison, the little 16" AA Bright Crash seems very dark. In order to make it work, a drummer would literally have to build around the OMNI, perhaps buying both the 18" and 22" models and the AAX El Sabor Hand crash from which it was derived. As with all AAX models it does seem to blend well with other AAX's -- non-AAXplosion models. My jazz/fusion set doesn't have enough real estate to accommodate the OMNI and the ride and crash cymbals that it was intended to replace. My big rock set up does have plenty of room for this 22" beast. It would make a great left-side ride/bright crash effect. The problem with putting it into a rock set-up is that it would get destroyed. The edge of this cymbal is among the thinnest I've ever played. When you combine that extra thin edge with a medium heavy bell and heavier Rock sized drumsticks, you have a recipe for a broken cymbal. So unless you plan on building a fusion, latin, or jazz set-up around the OMNI, it probably isn't a good fit for you.

Comments about Sabian AAX OMNI Ride:

I'm recently getting back into drumming. I started off in bands as a drummer, but when I wanted to write songs and sing I switched to guitar. Still always played drums on my own recordings. I've always played Zildjian cymbals, but I've always wanted a crash/ride, so in getting my new kit, I'm doing a Ringo set up, so I went to the music store and played every crash ride they had and bought the 22" Sabian AAX Omni. I have been delighted with it. It does everything I want it to, nice dry ping in the center area, nice bell sound and if you hit the edge, nice crash sound. Mine even came with Jojo Mayer's signature. I don't know if they all do, but it was cool. Very versatile cymbal. Highly recommended from me if you want a crash/ride.

THE SOUND is sooooo epic! with soft mallets I can create the most amazing crescendos! it has a surface I can get 10,000 tones and sounds from. The edge gives sweetness, a light tough brings amazing emotional twinges of high frequency when played with a plastic tipped stick. played with the edge of the stick gives a SHARP fast sound. the inner bell SPEAKS loudly and with authority. overall its AMAZING and my fav cymbal.

            A truly great cymbal

Comments about Sabian AAX OMNI Ride:

Incredibly versatile! Great bell, nice dry ping in center of cymbal, rich wash on outer section. quick response when crashed especially for a 22in. When used as a ride, the center portion has a nice low pitch but when crashed on outer section it is fairly high pitched with a very slight trashy quality. If someone wasn't watching you play they could easily think you are hitting two separate cymbals. I have actually removed my right hand side crash from my setup for this reason as it covers both crash and ride duties spectacularly. Simplify man!
I would say however this is not a great cymbal for the bashers out there as it is very thin on the outer edge and has a fairly mellow volume... but thats one of the main reasons i love it. the fact that it doesn't overpower the rest of the kit like a lot of big rides can. SO GOOD!

Comments about Sabian AAX OMNI Ride:

Dry, dark stick, not overly loud on the 18" version. Fast (both attack and decay), shimmery, washy crash. Some have described it as "trashy" (china-like), but it doesn't sound trashy to me. I've got this paired with a 14" Sabian Control Sound crash on a Breakbeats for a small jazz ensemble in very small venues. The thing is completely amazing. I love playing it. Oh, bright, dark? If it were any darker, I don't think you'd hear the ride section. What sticks you use make more difference on this than on any cymbal I've played. Wood tips are softer and darker, nylon louder and brighter.

I first started toying with the idea of getting one of these because the particular one I was looking at sounded fantastic. it crashes, rides and the bell is awesome. I now use it as my main ride. I love it. The only reason I give it a 4 star rating is because the sound of these things very so greatly from one to another. even though they are the same cymbal, they sound drastically different from one to the next. the salesman told me that the one I got is the best sounding one that they have had in the store for some time. After I bought mine and they replaced it with another (mine is a 22") I was comparing it and they guy was right. I could definately tell the difference between the two. Mine sounds fantastic and it is the ride that I now use at all my gigs. I would recommend this cymbal but I would also reccomend that you check it out in person before purchasing.

First off this cymbal is not your typical ride at all!!!
For a 22 inch cymbal, you would think it would be super duper loud. But it's not. WHICH is fantastic. This AAX has a center which is ride based and heavier. But the outside 6-7 inches are lathed. This lathed aspect brings the most beautiful and unique sound to fill the air.
I play in a punk and band and go all out on it, using it like a crash. But I also play drums for my church and use this cymbal as my ride. It's so versatile. With the Sabian and AAX name it really holds up to my standards. It will not disappoint you!

I purchased both the 22 inch and the 18 inch about a year and a half ago. They are the only true "crash-rides." I play in both a punk band and Jam-band, and my 22 inch can suit both styles. The bell of the 22 has the ideal sound of a bell, in my opinion. Riding the 22 inch has a very dry but smooth sound to it. Crashing the 22 is just awesome!!! So many different sounds can come out of it. The 18 inch has a good bell, but the crash can be a bit too harsh for my jam band, I tend to use it only for my punk band. The ride function sounds good, but prefer my 22 for riding purposes. Both of these cymbals are great looking and worth purchasing. I would definitely recommend these to anyone.
